IMO I agree that there should be less "ocean" biomes. HOWEVER, I am a firm believer that if you do indeed find an ocean, it should be MASSIVE and VAST in size! Also, deeper and more cooler!
On another note, There should be underwater "villages" (or shipwrecks if you will)
Yeah! I want "more cooler" things too! How big do you want oceans to be? They're massive and vast right now, but not stupidly big. I'm just going to ignore the random suggestion you added at the end.
If oceans are more fleshed out instead of being a massive pit of water made with a mess of dirt, sand and clay, only hosting Squids and nothing else in them, then they wouldn't be annoying like they are right now.
And please don't make players spawn in ocean biomes.
Yeah, I want my oceans to be gigantic bodies of absolutely nothing but derp squids, dirt, sand, gravel, and clay.
No really, why would you want the massive oceans of suck?

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...

I think they need to add features to it not downsize them! make them more interesting. 9/10 times i find an ocean biome and think,
"I'm going to create a cool galleon/ship there!"
But then soon realize that even with the old terrain generation, the shoreline can be seen very close!
I really miss the large oceans too. I think 80k blocks wide and up is ridiculous, but it seems like mojang doesn't compromise. It's either what one half of people want or what the other half wants.
If they were smart, they would just have an option for large oceans and make everyone happy.
I think it was a poor decision to make oceans as small as they now are.
Less oceans meant more stuff to find only because oceans had no content.
Adding a lot of ocean content would have been the proper solution.

Even if oceans had lots of content, I don't think it would matter very much because the majority of people would spend almost all of their time on land. (though ocean content would probably at least make ocean crossing less dull) Some people don't like that the oceans don't form continents anymore, but I think that's a problem with the shape of the oceans, not the size.
I'm glad they added deep oceans though, even though they're just gravel. The oceans looked silly before, because there was no depth.
Personally, I prefer the size oceans are now. Before you ask Mojang to add more content to oceans, consider what an ocean is. It's a large body of water, which on Earth makes up the majority of the world. Now this is Minecraft, and I don't believe it should try to become more realistic by sacrificing enjoyability. If you genuinely believe that it's somehow fun to need to spend more time sailing in an ocean before you find land, I just don't understand your mindset. I understand and agree that there should be large bodies of water separating vastly different continents, but I don't see why they need to be as large as some people seem to want.
I rather like the oceans now, not that I didn't before; but at least on a server there's not quite so many thousands of blocks of featureless oceans. Actually it seems to me the amount of small islands has increased, I have spawned on a few, and I think it's a more manageable size for a starting area.
The other day I had to travel 2600 blocks by boat in order to find a Savanna, as the ones near spawn were generated with the snapshots. I enjoyed the journey (apart from the server keep forgetting where my avatar was) and managed to get my reward with only a little island-hopping. I've yet to find a mesa or icy spikes biome on my server world, but I think that the scale of the oceans is greatly improved over previous versions.
Oceans were not adressed well. Although being smaller isn't a problem, what is a problem is not creating continents. It wouldn't be bad if half the worlds or half the oceans in a world didn't separate land to create continents, but it's pretty ridiculous now. Also, they are just oceans, but at least something could be done to make them more interesting. The occasional watch tower? Ship wreck? Maybe just more variety in how islands are spawned in oceans and what the islands look like? (Seriously, islands are now pretty much evenly spread out without much distance between them. That's no variety). Perhaps just more Mushroom Islands? (And the disappearence of giant mushrooms in Roofed Forests). More sea critters such as visible fish (instead of being invisible until caught), whales, underwater ghasts, etc? More variety in the formation of the sea floor (including larger ravines to make truly spectular trenches worth exploring with the Snorkelling potion)? Maybe not such an abrupt transition between the shore and the deep? Something!
Also is it just me, or is water too transparent in Minecraft? Even in deep oceans I can see the sea floor. Maybe it's just because the oceans just aren't deep enough. If and when I ever get into modding, I am so changing the sea level to layer 128.
Currently as it is, I would actually preferred if they temporary remove these ocean and put them back in a future update fleshed out with underwater mobs, blocks and ruins/shipwreck. These would stop the current map from generating big chunks of rather redundant areas till things are improved.
But that's just my preference of how things should be worked on, I rather the developers focus on a certain aspect rather than implementing broad features. Would also ease the bug testing too.

But shipwrecks, ruins, coral (sponges?)

agreed! I can't even count the amount of times I started drowing as my game first loaded... lol

I don't think so...

But alas, they rushed update.

Keep scrolling. Just keep scrolling...

That's not really something that is wrong with oceans, that's something wrong with stronghold generation.
