Here are two different renders of the Ocean seed, using Amidst, from 1.6 and 1.7.
I bet you can tell which is which from just looking at these, but in case you didn't know, 1.6 is above and 1.7 is below.
Generation of mushroom islands are much more common in versions 1.6 and below. In current versions, these oceans appear more like oversized rivers than an actual body of water. It just adds up to the horrid terrain, with its lack of variation per thousand meters. Take note that these renders were taken from the default version of the world, not large biomes.
I have always loved travelling through oceans prior to 1.7. It may have been a time consuming process, but in the end I receive a much better reward. The main reason I love to navigate through oceans is that it is a quick way to move away from spawn. It allows me to ensure the safety of my home, or base, when in SMP. Now I have to cross a large mass of land, which lacks variation. The thing with land is that people are supposed to adore the generation, and oceans are there not for the aesthetics, but mainly to separate these large biomes.
The last I remember from an SMP server, I clearly remember crossing a 10k ocean. I spent a many Minecraft days on a boat, but it was all worth it. The community of the server was a hostile one, I believe it was a faction server. After 10k of pure water, I decided to stop. It didn't seem like the ocean was going to end, so I decided to start my sky shelter above the middle of the ocean. No shore could be seen, so I knew my safety of my shelter was ensured.
Still haven't answered my question as to the Coordinate size of these Maps.
In fact, I believe they are of different Scale.
Both maps are equally flawed; but, in different ways. Neither Map generates Bodies Of Water and Landmasses that are comparable to Earth Landmasses and Bodies Of Water.
- No Atlantic-like Ocean
- No Pacific-like Ocean
- No Australia-like Landmass
- European-like Landmass & North American-like Landmass & South American-like Landmass are meshed together like Africa & The Middle East and Europe & Asia
I sorta agree. You should have to travel a long distance to come to an ocean. They shouldn't make a really big lake and call it an ocean. Maybe make lakes bigger so that they're more interesting. But oceans should give you a serious challenge to get across.
I completely agree with you.
It would be AWESOME if there where 1-8 giant masses of land in the world.
I t would also be great if doors, sugercane, ect. Didnt make ugly annoying bubbles.

Both maps are of equal scale, approximately 50000 blocks across.
May the odds ever be in your favor.
