So apparently, Mojang is going to be removing almost all of the technical block IDs in 1.7. Overall I like the 1.7 update, but I'm fairly irritated by this seemingly unnecessary change.
What is the benefit of them doing this?

What's the difference between technical block IDs and regular block IDs?
Technical ID's basically determine the state that a block is in. For example, 124 is the technical ID number for a Redstone Lamp that is turned on. If the lamp is turned off, the ID switches to 123.
Because if they don't, it's going to be a huge mess when they change the way blocks and items are identified for the Plugin API.
Why would they change this? The current method of identifying items is so much better than the one I keep hearing about. It's much easier to look up the item IDs rather than trying to remember all the block names and type them out.
I don't understand why they can't just move the technical blocks somewhere else if they're posing that much of a problem. Pumpkin stems were a traditional element of my old server's culture and now they're just gone because someone didn't think they were necessary.

Actually, 'technical' block IDs are not any different than normal block IDs. They are simply blocks that cannot be obtained legitimately. For example, the lit redstone lamp. It is a valid block, but cannot be obtained.
I think it's great that Mojang is removing these blocks - the game will then use up less block IDs. I don't see any problem with Mojang's removal of these, unless a server or map uses these technical blocks anywhere.

That's my point - a few servers out there DO use technical blocks, and there was no real reason to remove them. In addition to the example Lolumad provided, pumpkin stems were the narcotic of choice on my server, and I also had a plan to make a texture pack that would retexture some of the technical blocks to use them as guns. I won't be able to do that now thanks to this update.
EDIT: I just talked with some Bukkit people. Apparently, not only can you no longer /give the technical blocks, even if you manage to get one in your inventory through something like NBTeditor or MCedit, it will crash your client. So yeah, technical blocks are definitely gone.

The reason they would change the ID format from: "1" to "Minecraft:stone", is due to the upcoming mod API, a main issue with mod compatibility is due to 1 mod using say.. ID:190 and another mod wants to use the same number for something else.. Minecraft has replaced these numbers with names, allowing for far greater mod capabilities..
The idea is that block ids will not exist anymore. Instead, they will be replaced with names. (Currently, numbers and words are both usable, but that's supposed to change to only words being usable.) It is still possible to obtain technical blocks, for example:
/give @p lit_furnace
will give you a lit furnace, which is a technical block. You can also you setblock with technical blocks:

I actually like that, /setblock ~ ~ ~ tnt_prime all the way!wait... oops, tnt_prime (or PrimedTnt) isn't a block it's an entity

So you're complaining that a hack that was not a feature meant to be used that way has been changed? Just be patient and wait for the Plugin API. Then you'll be able to add all kinds of new items and not have to worry about the ID's changing or disappearing.
All of these sorts of changes are in preparation for the API and it's going to make hackable moddable things that people have been using for quite awhile... not work. And we just kind of have to deal with that.
----I'm usually on the other side of these conflicts of 'fixed oddities' but I was planning to add herobrine to my mod and one of the items he would drop is lit lamps. It made for one of the good strange items he would drop, but no more. :/
It's much easier to look up the item IDs rather than trying to remember all the block names and type them out.
Here is what you should have said:

I hope this doesn't remove the ability to spawn the dirt in plateau biomes. (The kind that won't get overtaken by grass.) Because those look great as small pathways.
They really don't serve a point. The piston extension, for example, serves no purpose to the player. It cannot be placed, crafted, used, worn, NOTHING. It just sits there as tile.null. And the redstone lamp, no point in having an on one, it updates upon placing anyway. This removal will probably also clear up some space for modded items, so more things can be implemented for modifications. I'd say it is a great idea. What I don't get is that they still haven't removed the locked chest.... ._.

3... 2... 1... FAILED TO LAUNCH... wait, this is a signature...
It's just blocks like the Locked Chest, I think.
