Hello friends! Having the same problem as you guys with mavericks lagging out Minecraft, I researched for a bit and found what I think is the problem, turns out Oracle's java 7 is not as stable as Apple's discontinued java 6. So i downgraded from 7 to 6 ( download and click install here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572 ) and I'm back to +120 fps.
Hope this helps, see ya!
I was defaulted to Java 6, so that doesn't fix it for me.
I went from a stable 120fps on 1.6.4 and mountain lion to 35fps that likes to freeze up and drop down to 1fps on 1.7.2 and mavericks. Are they going to give us any info on this? I currently have to set video settings to minimum just to play.
This is on a mac pro that can run battlefield 4 at high so I am not impressed!
Give it time. Spotlight might be indexing, and even if it isn't, just wait it out.
My FPS for the most part is back, and I'm sure there'll be Java updates soon to fix any instability.
This thread may of changed my mind about buying a Mac, sadly, I was looking forward to seeing how well Minecraft would run on it, but I might not be buying a Mac now.
Well, I'm on win7 and I'm laughing at all those Mac users with my 250 FPS LOL. Do answer your question. Minecraft runs slow on any Mac. Since Mac has the most ancient version of java used what can you expect. Also come to think of it, there has been a lot of debate about how much win8 has screwed down Minecraft. I'm starting to think that perhaps something was added in both of them to make them run 'smoother'. But instead screwed up java. Java hasn't been updated for a while and is still at version 7.45. Perhaps we should just wait for a java update. OR,

1. Java 7 is for mac
2. Minecraft doesn't seem to run slow on my mac, so keep your generalizing to a minimum, mkay? Keep in mind I had Photoshop and Chrome in the background, but yeah.
I run a hackintosh and have experienced similar FPS problems since updating to Mavericks. Java updates seem to have little or no effect; it's something else (I also believe it is OpenGL-related).
OSX doesn't run Minecraft moticeably slower or faster than any other OS, really. And, if I wanted, I (and any other Intel-based Mac user) could run Windows7/8 on my box... I'd just *rather* use OSX.
I'm gonna keep working for a solution other than booting into Windows every time I wanna play MC. There's gotta be one out there!
After updating my computer my minecraft was also slower, I found though that for some reason it adjusted my energy settings to power saver, I switched it back to better performance and it increased it slightly (online from maybe 15-20 holding enchanted stuff to 25-30 if i am lucky). My fps was fine after updating with 1.6.4 (35-45 on power cord [using a macbook pro] ) and the 1.7.2 update killed it.
As for the person with the 150X area, maybe reinstall minecraft?
If anyone has found any ways to help improve fps please post about it, I will do the same if i find anything else that helps.

1. Download gfxCardStatus and run it.
2. Close other games, movie players, etc.
3. Click "i" mark on menubar, and select "Integrated Only".
4. Run Minecraft.
You REALLY shouldn't be running that slow. What are your other video settings...?
<--- Please click my egg, it really helps!
