I was going to do some work on my zombie farm, so I opened the daylight shaft to shut down the spawner. Somewhat to my surprise, that didn't seem to work. Oooookay ... it sure looked like there was more light in there, but maybe something was borked in the shaft somehow. So I hopped into the room and stuck torches on the spawner. And a zombie smacked me in the behind as I was going back out the door. Despite the daylight shaft being open and torches on the top and all four sides of the spawner, zombies kept spawning. While they were physically blocked off from the area I was working in, so not actually a threat, I finally had to switch to Peaceful just to shut them the heck up. (you know how annoying it is when you're trying to work out the details of a redstone contraption and there's all that moaning going on?)
This is not the behavior I've observed in the past from spawners. Normally the torch business shuts them down; in fact, that's exactly how I shut this one down when I first dug into the room. So am I losing what little remains of my mind, or has anyone else had the same thing happen in the latest (or next-to-latest, I'm not sure when this started) snapshot?
Don't merely light up the spawner itself, but light up the entire area otherwise sometimes the mobs can spawn in the corners of the dungeon or even in adjacent tunnels.
Zombie spawning has been annoying and somewhat bugged since 1.6 was released.
Now, what I'm guessing happened is that you hit a zombie and one spawned behind you, or maybe a couple around you, and you caused more zombies to come at you because you hitting the zombies to kill them probably ended up spawning a few more.
If this is the devs' idea of difficulty, if they have to resort to cheap tactics like the zombie-spawn-on-hit mechanic to kill players instead of fair tactics that actually can be overcome through skill, that's rather sad.

Actually shutting the spawner down is less of a concern than the fact that what worked on it last week isn't working this week.

No, the room was empty before that happened. Several times, I killed any zombies that spawned, leaving the room completely clear and zombie-free (and, more importantly, quiet), went back to work on my changes, and while I was down at the far end of the works (I was rebuilding the killing pit area) zombies spawned around the spawner itself (and started groaning, hence the noise problem). That's definitely not the same behavior I observed last week, when torches stuck to the spawner were sufficient to disable it completely.
I had no zombies at all spawning when I was building the system, when I had just the torches to shut down the spawner; now I can't seem to stop them, despite using both torches and a skylight shaft.
Probably just a problem with the snapshot. It'll pass.
