I dont like the gravel, its useless for me, and ugly, no practical uses at all. Sometimes I use it to fill some lava pool and see if there is something under that lava, but thats not really fun to do. Why only gravel? why not sand, and clay, and stone, dirt. I dont know... just gravel? whatever... I probably never going to be in the bottom of the ocean anyway
You people are incredible...
First you were crying that the oceans were too big...
And now that they've changed it, they are too small?!?
You have any idea how silly this looks?
They were too big nuff said.
And oceanmobs, many many ocean mobs?
As soon as they implement such a thing, you people will start crying about lag, lag and lag.
Because that is what probably will happen if Mojang stuffs this program full off mobs.
Due to the way MC is written perhaps, i read that somewhere and it made sense...
You spoiled lot on the other had don't.
Give it a rest please
I love it when people say things like this because I enjoy letting people know how invalid their arguments are.
1. Some people liked it, some people hated it. Don't say that people are just changing their minds for the sake of whining because they are not. Some people like the update, and most simply don't.
2. That's your opinion.
3. Fast graphics water is not longer translucent. If people truly had lag issues, they could toggle that and prevent ocean mobs from rendering when they aren't looking at them.
I personally agree with mostly everybody above. I'd prefer a world split by continents rather than be one huge continent that has huge lakes in it.
The problem is that while we have older members located out in the million XZ coordinates, we would still like newer potential members to enjoy the new biomes. Which is why the owner has decided when Jeb first started announcing new biomes that he wanted to start a brand new server with the same concept. once the news of "fixed" oceans was leaked out, that sort of ruined our plans.
Bolded part was the part I didn't understand. I thought you meant 'goodbye to the world currently existing on our server,' which didn't make any sense for obvious reasons. Well, when the terrain changes there is just nothing to be done about it, you either start new or live with chunk borders (or edit your world) so I can see how that is disappointing in this specific situation.
I don't know how the coding works, or if there is a possibility to generate the occasional HUGE ocean or not. Might make those random seeds more special than they have been recently when every other world felt like 80% dead ocean space.
You people are incredible...
First you were crying that the oceans were too big...
And now that they've changed it, they are too small?!?
Who are these "you people" you refer to? Do you honestly believe that "those people" suddenly changed their minds on a large scale? If you are going to call out a generic, collective group, then the least you can do is to find cases of someone actually polarized on the issue. I'm going to take a wild guess here and guess that most individuals stick to their guns when opinions are concerned.
And secondly, that wasn't just a subtle change here, Jeb went from one extreme end to the other in one big move. Instead of making the oceans simply smaller incrementally and trying to tweak it step-by-step to find a more sensible size with the help of community feedback, he literally removed them altogether. I didn't like how large the oceans were myself, but I just wanted them to be smaller, not removed outright.
This thread hints at an actual majority who wants the continents to return. I'm not going to say that poll is statistically significant and accurately represents the MC community in general, but where did you get your facts from?
I don't think we need many ocean mobs, but 2 or 3 would be nice. And I also agree that the ocean doesn't have the same feel either, now it's just a simple lake, I don't actually use a boat a lot of the time now due to being able to swim just a few hundred blocks in a direction and get land.
And of course, I hate the gravel, what's it doing in an ocean anyway? I don't really see the point in it. Plus, we already have Gravel Beaches, which is more than enough for me.
The Ocean needs to be changed back to the original size, and we need our Ocean Update.
When I saw this threads title I thought it would be about oceans being barren (a legitimate complaint.) But people are mad because they think it is SMALL?....I hate oceans, they are UN-interesting, boring to cross, and have nothing interesting to do / look at on the trip, so like others said its pretty much weighing down the W / space key and waiting for something that isn't blue to show up. Wanting bigger oceans is a VERY niche requests, I'm sure.
You people are incredible...
First you were crying that the oceans were too big...
And now that they've changed it, they are too small?!?
As incredible as it may seem, but the Minecraft community doesn't have a hive mind. There are various opinions about every single factor in the game, and there will always be a small minority who doesn't like a feature, no matter how universally loved, who'll be vocal in their complaints.
I, for one, liked the format of continents surrounded by an infinite ocean. I liked having a place where the land ended, and a long voyage of several in-game days to where new land began.
They were too big nuff said.
And oceanmobs, many many ocean mobs?
That's your opinion, but I had no problems with the size of the oceans.
My problem with the oceans was the lack of content. I've always liked diving in minecraft, but besides seeing the glow of lava at night in the depths below, construction projects, or (pre-1.7) clay, there was no reason to dive in the game.
There are no hostile mobs in the oceans. There are no sunken ruins in the oceans. There aren't shipwrecks in the oceans. There aren't any coral reefs in the oceans. And now there isn't any clay in the oceans. There's just sheer monotony, with the occasional underwater ravine to explore.
For me, at least, 1.7 oceans are a step backwards, not forwards to more oceanic fun. We have enchantments to extend our dives, and we now have potions of water-breathing, so why isn't Mojang doing something with the most underdeveloped biome in the game?
As soon as they implement such a thing, you people will start crying about lag, lag and lag.
Because that is what probably will happen if Mojang stuffs this program full off mobs.

Underwater mobs aren't persistant mobs, like breedable mobs are. They spawn like hostile mobs. There can only be a certain number of peaceful mobs in your general vicinity at any one time, and once the limit is reached, no more will spawn. As long as underwater mobs are non-persistant, then there won't be a problem with more lag, because you'll always have the same number of mobs in your area, only in the middle of the ocean, there'll be other mobs besides squid.
Not trying to call you out but I don't understand.
The server admin wants an extremely rare occurrence to strike twice? And is not willing to editing the world them self. Just expects a random process to somehow magically work again? And this is why small bodies of water are no good?
Extremley rare? I don't know, I have opened a few new maps where I spawned in a huge ocean that seemed to never end. I think the OP just took a lot of time trying to find an ocean seed that served his purpose. Probably somewhat rare, but with persistence not a one in a million occurence.
Why is it so important for the game to be "VANILLA?" The game generates according to a complex set of completely random algorithms. No matter how much they tweek it, the game will never be what people expect it to be. The new snap shot looks better but it's still just random.
I don't really understand this part. The server is vanilla because some people would prefer to play minecraft in an un-molested state. Someone like myself for instance.
The Admin does not want random just like your comment at the bottom says. Don't use it!
You don't understand my signature. I am making a satire of the typical Minecraft Forum user. It is typical to hear users simply say "You don't like it, don't use it!" rather than try to make a vaild argument.
And secondly if you want a large "Dead" zone on your world, just keep the world and let the new pieces generate out farther. That seems like a win to me.
Yeah I commented on that problem in an earlier post, but it looks like with 13w7a released today, that might not be an option...

I meant goodbye to the idea of a server that offers a ocean spawn, providing a natural barrier to griefers and pests.
I think people need to read back on my comments and realize that I am NOT complaining about 1.7 and it's awesome new world development. Best update in a LONG time in my opinion. I am just stating why someone might not like smaller oceans.
More than a few of us are sick of endless oceans taking up multiple map sizes without breaking for land, but there are still reasons to like some oceans. To do away with them entirely is a little much, but rather that they should be restricted in size.
Oceans aren't oceans now, they are just big lakes in an infinite landmass.
I prefer actually having continents.
In addition, the gravel floor sucks.
I would have been fine with them just removing the dirt, leaving the sand and clay, and adding some noise.
Shrinking the ocean sizes is avoiding the real problem of lack of ocean content.
Water mobs, ocean materials, more boats.
Instead of adding those, they pretty much remove oceans.
Yeah, well I'm sure the majority of players would agree that no one wants to cross gigantic planes of nothingness to actually play the game.
I kind of dislike oceans not having clay/sand at the bottom and it being all gravel, but if you think about it for long enough it starts to make sense.. Who the hell wants to dive down 20-35+ blocks to get a little bit of sand and clay??
Really, why are people complaining about oceans..? They are still pretty damn big now. Prove me wrong, map out a 25k*25k area and show me that it has no oceans that are at least 1500 blocks in one direction. Tell me, please tell me that water isn't covering a large portion of said map. I guarentee you won't.
And secondly, that wasn't just a subtle change here, Jeb went from one extreme end to the other in one big ass move. Instead of making the oceans simply smaller incrementally and trying to tweak it step-by-step to find a more sensible size with the help of community feedback, he literally removed them altogether. I didn't like how large the oceans were myself, but I just wanted them to be smaller, not removed outright.
This is one of the better posts in this thread. You nailed the problem on the head.
Jens did something that the folks at Mojang are becoming famous for: Ludicrously over-correcting for a problem.
They see something people are complaining about, and instead of trying to slightly adjust things in the right direction, they go crap-balls crazy in the other direction and then wonder why people complain.
I don't think that any of the people that were complaining about the unnecessary hugeness of oceans wanted them to be removed entirely. They just wanted them to be scaled back a bit to a more reasonable size. The (albeit ONE) screenshot that we saw of the new algorithm seems to indicate a complete removal of the ocean generation, and a reversion to the 1.7.3 style waterways.
That all said, I still think it's far too early to really condemn the dev team on this particular issue. We are still very early in development on the next version, and the screenshot we did see doesn't adequately define exact sizes of the new "oceans". Honestly, there's lots of room for improvement with the biome update from where it currently stands, and they have plenty of time to refine it.
I will be reserving final judgement until after 1.7 is officially released.
Agreed that all that was really needed was a scaling back, not removal of oceans. In fact huge oceans are fine, so long as they don't represent the majority of oceans generated.
Variety is what's important. Not variety as in the number of different biomes available, but variety in the forms those biomes take in terms of size, elevation variation and land forms.
That's what keeps peoples interest, never knowing quite what you'll find when you explore.
As it stands, all these new biomes are great, but eventually we might well get back to the state we're in now where we've seen it all and any particular biome is just like every other occurence of that biome type.
What we need is a moderate amount of that amplified terrain occasionaly cropping up in a normal world in any biome.
That would make exploring worthwhile.
1. I only read the first page.
2. I liked the larger oceans. I created a server map with a city next to a large mushroom island in the middle of a huge ocean.
3. I hope that there could be an option to generate several types of worlds: continuous land with lakes, continents with small oceans, and vast oceans with large islands, combined with large biomes/regular-sized biomes/small biomes.
4. I never complained about the large oceans, though I offered helpful suggestions for more ocean content.
5. Having more world generation options would greatly enhance the playing experience.
No, we don't need more world generation options. We need any normal survival world to be able to generate any type of terrain.
What if I want the possibility of every thing you mentioned (continuous land with lakes, continents with small oceans, vast oceans with large islands, combined with large biomes/regular-sized biomes/small biomes) all in one world? Can't I have that?
Why is it thought that people would have a preference for just one world form? Such a world would effectively be uniform and thus monotonous.
Sure have options for different types of homogeneous world for those wanting a particular theme, but allow the normal world generation to feed off of all of the other generation types and have the chance to utilise any and all of them in a single world.
Ihate it when people complain about what they've asked for it reallu does bug me. And as for under water stuff' wait till the snapshots are over, weve only had two!
Soz for the bad grammer, I'm writing on my tablet.
>implying the same people who asked for things are now complaining about them.
It really sucks not to have defined continents, but rather an endless expansion of land with lakes splotched between. It makes the world rather redundant and uninteresting, and it looks awful on any large map. They should reintroduce large oceans, and just add large islands to mix it up. I've always wanted to be able to claim and play on a large island in the middle of an ocean, anyway.
Oceans aren't oceans now, they are just big lakes in an infinite landmass.

Definition of "Ocean": "A very large expanse of sea, in particular, each of the main areas into which the sea is divided geographically." A lake technically is an ocean, as is a pond, puddle, piddle, fiddle or fuddle.

You missed the definition of "Sea" (which is very important here):
"the expanse of salt water that covers most of the earth's surface and surrounds its landmasses."
