So I've been seeing mixed responses in regards to changes in the ocean generation in the new snapshot. Apparently oceans are no longer going to be the gigantic size they were are are going to be small and more like small ponds. But there's also the new deep ocean biome which the ocean is many blocks deep. Could someone explain this to me?
Still large enough that you cannot see land on the other side, a couple of thousand blocks. They a much more rare, though.
As long as they do still have some decent sized oceans I'll be happy enough. I love being able to graft chunks of old worlds into new ones as islands with MCEdit, the oceans made that possible.
Also; I'm sooo happy that there will finally be 'normal' islands in the oceans and seas and not just mushroom islands. And I love spires so those spire islands are wicked.
* Still hoping for coral reefs and unique under-ocean resources to make it into 1.7.x.
Coral reefs are incredibly hard to make according to jeb, but I too am hoping for a reason to make a waterbreathing potion.
That's what notch used to say about rivers and oceans but then he eventually had a breakthrough, hopefully they have a breakthrough for coral too.
And even if not coral there are many other things they could do.
Have edible kelp-type growths in deep water that give you lots of health.
Underwater ship-wrecks with loot in them.
Underwater cliff-caves. Maybe some of these already generate?
The occasional ancient sunken city. With Loot!
Deep water ravines, perhaps with seaweed vines going down the sides and big chunks of emerald or diamond at the bottom in some places, as well as sea-serpents guarding them.
Giant clams with pearls. Pearls and pearl dust could be an ingredient for all kinds of things.
An ancient underwater Fortress in the middle of a mega-ocean with Cthulu trapped in the center, heh heh. It could be like a Mega-version of a Ghast.
And please!!! For the love of all that is holy.. Please get rid of abandoned mine shafts covering every square inch beneath oceans kilometers away from anything....
I could think of more things too. Like Rainwalker; I really hope they add some ocean-content, though islands were a nice first step.
They seemed to finally get the hint that it became 'hold-down-w'-craft or 'world swallowed by ocean'-craft.
Coral is difficult simply because as set structures they might pop out too much or too little and as an algorithm they might not curve correctly at any given location etc. Another issue is that coral reefs would server no purpose, the block itself, besides being for looks, which when I added reefs just started to become an eyesore because it's not like it goes good with anything else other then exactly where it's at(aka, would be hard to use in house decor).
Whats so hard about the Coral blocks underwater is it would require 2 blocks to be combined...water+coral block/plant; which trapdoors, slabs, and other blocks make water pockets when placed underwater.
I am kind of sad about the large oceans going away. I do understand that it sucks to start in an ocean biome with no trees and no other biomes for 10000m but I feel like oceans should be more interesting instead of being nerfed. I do like the new islands you can find in them that actually contain a biome, and I also like the sections of deep ocean. But I do want the oceans themselves to be more interesting (and large again so that they are actually oceans separating continents instead of just big lakes.) There should be underwater ambience such as seaweed, corals, and fish type mobs (perhaps also sharks that are hostile to the player) and more reason to want to explore them like sunken treasur ships and such.

To those of you suggesting new uses for Emeralds in the suggestions forum: Emeralds have enough uses. You can trade with villagers to get diamond armor/tools/weapons and enchants. Stop suggesting that Emeralds are useless, and learn to play Minecraft. Thanks.
