i think they should just retexture the poppy to look like a rose.
Why? They wouldn't look like poppies if they looked like the old roses... oh.
Here's my opinion on the situation guys...
I don't really care roses were replaced by rose bushes. I don't want poppies or rose bushes to be replaced by the old roses just so some 10% of the Minecraft community is happy. I honestly don't see the problem with there being rose bushes instead. IMO the rose bushes are prettier and more realistic. However, since this situation is causing an uproar, what if punching a rose bush gave you the singular flower? Then, if you use bonemeal on singular roses, they'll turn into rose bushes?
The problem I see with single roses returning is that they'll be incredibly similar to poppies. my solution to this is: make the poppies slightly more orange, and make the dark center part of the texture more black.
This is without a doubt the most ridiculous and trivial thing I've ever heard anyone complain about it...and trust me, I've seen a lot of silly update complaints. It's only a flower, and yet some people are acting as if the entire game has been destroyed. I've actually heard people threaten to never update again because of this. I mean, seriously? What on Earth...
The poppy that replaced the rose looks nearly identical, and it has the exact same function: decoration and dye. And, what's more, we now have three red flowers to choose from...but somehow that's not enough for some people.
And if it really bothers you that much, change the name back to "rose" in the language files and use the old rose texture. It's not difficult.
I've actually heard people threaten to never update again because of this. I mean, seriously? What on Earth...
Well, what are you actually getting if you update? A couple of new derpy flowers, a couple of new derpy fish. Some admittedly cool biomes, but honestly, did we really need them? There have already been mods with better biomes. And the oceans are shrunk, so if you wanted a world with giant oceans (and any possibility of finding mushroom biomes) you had better not update.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Hi Jeb_, I know you're reading this. I just want to say I'm glad you're trying to make minecraft better. Not jeb, sorry
Unfortunately, I just loaded up the latest snapshot, and I found out that the old rose is completely gone.
Wrong, the rose is still in the game. Mojang only changed the texture and name, that's it.
Not only did I like the old rose, but I always thought of it as an iconic part of what Minecraft is.
What does Minecraft think the sun looks like? A big yellow square in the sky.
What does Minecraft think a pile of dirt looks like? A randomly pixellated brown cube.
Minecraft is not a sentient entity, it cannot interpret what a cube of dirt is. I have no idea where you are going with this.
Far from being a bad thing, I think these sorts of quirks are what gives Minecraft its charm, and part of the reason why it's so popular is that it has its own aesthetic that it's not afraid to flaunt.
No, the reason minecraft is popular is because it's a game, and on occasion, games are fun. People like fun things. That is why they like minecraft. Not because it's 'quirky', but because it's fun. Don't make things convoluted.
What does Minecraft think a flower looks like? The iconic Minecraft rose, of course, which is now gone. (What are iron golems going to offer to villagers now?)
As I said before, minecraft is not sentient, and cannot interpret objects. What does the interpretation is Mojang. So what you really mean is "What does mojang think a flower looks like?" The answer simple, a rose. Roses all look the same, no matter what. Take this picture: Did Disney travel 20 years into the future to base their rose design in the movie "Beauty and the Beast"off of a video game? No, they based it off a regular rose you'd find anywhere, and so did Mojang.
I realize you think you're making Minecraft more realistic by making roses grow in a bush instead. And in some cases I'm in favour of a bit more realism. Just not at the expense of stuff that we've learned to love.
What expense? A renaming and texture change?
Also, the new rose bush looks like a cultivated rose, and I've always thought of the world of Minecraft as a wild and simple place, where singular roses grow bold and proud and defiant. And if players really want a rose bush garden, why not give them a recipe for a rose bush? And a thing I don't understand: you're adding several new flowers to the game, so why delete one of the main old ones? If you're in favour of more flowers, why are you deleting flowers?
Nothing was deleted. The rose was simply renamed and re-textured, THAT'S IT.
In the end, Jeb_, the fact is, I don't need you. I will go on to retexture and rename the old flower back to what it was, and continue to play the Minecraft that I love.
Then why waste our time with this babbling jibber?
But the more people do this, the less contact you will have with the actual players of the game, and the less you will be able to please them. I'm not sad for me, I've lived the Minecraft dream, and continue to live it. I'm sad for you, and for all the new players who will play with a watered down lame* version of Minecraft. *Not actually lame; there are some features I really like, but others are like the new rose: lame.
I expected better from you. Really? You launch a hostile attack on not only Jeb, but also anyone who doesn't let their day be ruined by a rose?
Well, what are you actually getting if you update? A couple of new derpy flowers, a couple of new derpy fish. Some admittedly cool biomes, but honestly, did we really need them? There have already been mods with better biomes. And the oceans are shrunk, so if you wanted a world with giant oceans (and any possibility of finding mushroom biomes) you had better not update.
So you're trivializing new flowers, fish, and terrain gen changes because they changed what the rose was? Seriously? What's wrong with using a resource pack again?
It's a goddamn flower, it's not like they're stealing your liver or something...
If it's so terrible just replace the poppy texture with the old rose texture and use it as a resource pack. Would take less than 5 minutes.
that's a 'there's a mod for that" kindof statement. it would be east enough to have them craftable from rose bushes, as in you pluck some off, or maybe you could shear them? i mean, come on, the "there's a mod for it!" statement is old.
Tbh, I'm generally not too happy when items are retextured. I'm not planning to start a war over a new flower texture, but I prefer the simplicity in the design of the old roses. There's no harm in just creating a resource pack to change the textures the way you prefer.
How is making roses into poppies lame? Like all the other people before me said you can just replace the poppy texture with the old rose texture. Nuff' said.

No, that isn't a "there is a mod for that" statement. First off, those statements are invalid because of the difficulty of adding mods and the fact that they don't cross over onto SMP. They also might add more than what you wanted changed, or do it in a different way. But making a resource pack crosses over into SMP, it is easy to install and make, and you can change exactly what you want, nothing more nothing less. "Make a resource pack", is a perfectly legitimate argument.

Roses were never iconic.

Poppies, mabye...
And roses aren't iconic.

I don't think it would make any sense. Sure there are tons of things that don't make sense (like Pistonium) but I mean, how would you craft it?

Good to know, you can now stick your life in 1.6.2 mods, Minecraft 1.6.2, and you will be left out of the Minecraft commuinity.
I will go on to retexture and rename the old flower back to what it was, and continue to play the Minecraft that I love.

I'd settle for that. If the rose bush dropped four roses, I'd be quite happy.
