Changing difficulties i.e. making monster appear or disappear at will is not a feasible solution for people wanting a relaxing experience with the occasional jump on the chair. Knowing that monsters can't spawn or will spawn takes away the surprise element, and also feels like cheating to someone.
In Creative mode you don't need to eat, to get resources, to craft tools, to stay away from dangers, to make your way through the territory etc. etc. etc. Taking away all the Survival elements is not the answer to people just wanting the game to be easy at Easy difficulty level. What's wrong with that?
The game is easy at the easy difficulty. Zombies deal way less damage on easy then hard. The player should fairly easily be able to dispatch them. And iron sword with sharpness or smite will cut them down quite effectively on easy.
How do you get this mass of torches so quickly? Obviously, you must using server commands or SPC, cause otherwise you're talking about tons of coal and wood for sticks, especially for an area of a 60 block radius.. That takes time and resources, and now, time is against. Daylight is not a salvation anymore, as the horde will still come for you, even if they're losing people to burning deaths along the way.
Because it DOESN'T just happen at night. And oh yes, that sounds so fun and engaging doesn't, just sitting around not doing anything every night. Isn't the whole we play video games to stave that off?
What if you you didn't know about the zombies, how to make torches, make a bed, or the best places to gather food? Oh right, you're okay with excluding people who might be new to the game. Thus, basically, you're for the destruction of minecraft and its fanbase, because that's the road that leads down.
-snip-
Torches are not hard to get, all you need is trees. You don't even need coal. Not that coal is hard to find. I will concede that the first night in new world it is difficult to have enough torches to spam a huge area. But for the first night the longest practice of minecraft holds true, dig a hole, hide in hole, wait for sunlight to burn up enemies. Use that time to dig, make a stone or iron sword in case they are any survivors come morning.
Also from what I've read on this thread and others, it seems like many players are opposed to making a fence or wall around their bases, which I just don't understand. A 2 high wall is simple to build, as in not resource intensive, dirt and cobblestone are abundant. I think that if most of the players who are complaining about the new zombie behavior were a little bit more proactive in their game worlds they wouldn't have an issue with zombies.
Finally, caving: yes getting swarmed in a cave can be dangerous. But so can getting creeper bombed in a ravine, or shot into water by a skeleton. Cave diving requires caution. To all the players who take a water bucket caving with them (myself included), we do it because we don't want to burn up in lava, and we want to have the option to 'destroy' the lava. This is the same as the zombie danger, bring a sword, bring a bow, place torches as you go. At least you can limit where they can sneak up on you from.
Also you can wear armor, and bring health/regen potions too. The game provides the means to make it easier. 1 gold ingot can net 3 health potions. If you upgrade them to healing II that's 12 hearts of healing. Honestly I feel if players can't survive caving on easy with iron armor, and healing potions on easy difficulty, maybe survival minecraft isn't the right mode for them. And I'm not speaking to new players, I know when I was new I died a lot more then I do now, Minecraft has a learning curve, just like most other games.
You know, I haven't personally had a HUGE problem with the zombies lately, but the more I read comments and think about it, the more that the problem of keeping a village alive in normal survival stands out as a big issue. Seems the only thing you can successfully do in early game with limited resources is to light up 1 or 2 houses containing more than 1 villager and block the doors, hoping no zombies will spawn inside by some random fluke, so that later you can attempt to repopulate. Although if it were my choice I'd just unload the village chunk and come back when I had supplies, but sometimes that's not possible to do if you get caught at night and can't travel. The likelihood of entire villages being wiped out in a single night is probably the main thing that bothers me about the current state of zombies, because in the beginning of the game there's just not much you can do to stop it.
I suppose it's a luxury to have a nice populated village, and of course if you're maintaining a village you should be working for it. But the odds seem so enormously stacked. It used to be fun to play 'village defender' and go around slaying the zombies without a barrier, but now?? Oh well.
I don't think that keeping a village alive and well is difficult. And I play on hard, on a server. The village nearest to the spawn on my server has a 2 high cobble wall around it, the inside it torched. And there is a double fence gate system to get in and out. Yes zombies may swarm at night, but they can't get in. Also it's not in a chunk near anyone's base, so unless someone is at/near the village it's not even loaded. Also iron golems exist, players who want to build grand villages should strongly consider using a golem(s) in conjunction with walls.
You make a lot of good points about using game mechanics at your advantage, to play the game "smart", I won't even try discuss them, but you seem to miss the most important one: there are people who prefer a more relaxed, carefree approach that doesn't involve all that strategy. Those people used to be able to choose that gaming style but no longer can because suddenly the game requires a strategic approach even at Easy, not to mention the fact combat and planning takes away time from aesthetic building and other peaceful activities.
The game used to be so easy I could play at Normal with no armor and non-enchanted stone tools, no potions, no XP farms, no over-complicated defense systems on my "base" (just a regular house). I no longer can.
Now I should have two options: play Easy so I can keep that carefree gaming style or I could "man up" and keep playing Normal with a more careful approach. Does it sound reasonable, doesn't it? Well, I don't actually have the first option because even at Easy you can no longer, well, take it easy.
I can only barely imagine how worse this situation is for people which used to play Easy instead.

I understand what you're saying. You want an easy-mode, which has all the same function as survival mode; gather food, use tools etc, but without having to fight off tons of zombies. And I would be all for zombie spawning to be nerfed in easy mode. But I think the fact that Minecraft comes with: Creative, Survival Peaceful, Survivals Easy-Hard, and Survival Hardcore, leaves enough options that there is no real need to nerf zombie spawning, even in easy mode.
I play on a survival server, set on hard difficulty. I use mostly iron tools for the speed over stone, plus iron can get all the blocks. I use a diamond sword for the durability. I enchant my diamond sword(s) but not all enchants are helpful for zombie killing. I rarely wear armor, and usually it's just an iron chest. These things are not hard to get, and I don't die from zombies much at all. I still die from time to time, creepers or a pack of skeletons are usually the culprits.
I feel that players who just want to causally build and don't want to learn how to be 'good' (I use that term loosely) should play on peaceful then. If they are casual players but want the experienceof mob combat play on easy, and understand that Minecraft is not an easy game to master. I firmly believe that anyone who takes the time, to read a little about Minecraft, and plays through the pain will be able to play on easy or normal in 1.6 without much difficulty. And that doesn't mean "complex defenses" a fence and a gate is pretty simple. The sun kills all, or very nearly, zombies. If a player doesn't want to sleep the night away, use that time to mine, or build behind the fence.
I feel that players who just want to causally build and don't want to learn how to be 'good' (I use that term loosely) should play on peaceful then.
It doesn't matter what you think people should do with this game (it also sounds kinda patronizing), the only thing that matter is people used to be able to play in that way and now no longer can. For no apparent reason, and with no explanation by the developers.
Whoever made the decision that a carefree approach to Minecraft is no longer a valid approach is making a huge mistake.

I'm not telling people what to play, I'm simply saying that the developers of Minecraft have already provided many options for play styles. If you think that's patronizing that's your own opinion.
By the same hand, telling the developers they're making a huge mistake in changing an aspect of their game is also your opinion, but you and I and everyone else can't tell them how to make the game. We should be grateful they listen to their community as much as they do. Finally, Dinnerbone's decision to buff the combat in the last few updates was done deliberately, and likely in response to the large number of players who said Minecraft was too easy because of the additions like potions, enchanting, health regeneration etc. There was explanation given, the plan was to make the survival Minecraft more challenging and Mojang has done this.
And what is it exactly that players used to be able to do that they can't? I'm not being sarcastic, I would like to know what you think players can no longer do that they used to be able to do. And was that something that could be done in beta Minecraft? Before health regen?
... the plan was to make the survival Minecraft more challenging and Mojang has done this... I would like to know what you think players can no longer do that they used to be able to do.
It is not any more challenging. It is a now a nuisance as what used to be, on Normal difficulty, exploring cave systems and fighting mobs is now as previously stated simply hiding in a corner and fighting zombie after zombie. In 6 minutes of exploring an abandoned mineshaft I'd clocked nearly 50 zombies killed and I'd progressed about 3 blocks. Many of these zombies had full enchanted armour. Zombies spawn in fully lit areas. Zombies find their way up your caves into your house.
It doesn't make it more challenging, it doesn't make it more fun. It makes it an annoying experience.
And what is it exactly that players used to be able to do that they can't?
I don't know how to better explain myself so I'll just give up trying; all I know is my gaming style is changing because of 1.6 and I can barely imagine how that could affect people with a much more carefree approach than mine, such as little children and casual gamers.
And was that something that could be done in beta Minecraft? Before health regen?
I started playing in beta 1.2 and I can say no change in gameplay really affected my game style until 1.6. Not even health regen, getting enough food always was a trivial problem and now is just more of a chore but no big deal.
Sorry, I don't really know what else I can say to make you understand. I wish I could, I'm not trying to win an argument for the sake of it.

Okay, I'll guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. No problem with different opinions, makes for a better game if we as a community discuss these things.
The game is easy at the easy difficulty. Zombies deal way less damage on easy then hard. The player should fairly easily be able to dispatch them. And iron sword with sharpness or smite will cut them down quite effectively on easy.
I second this. What we are upset about is the fact that zombie hordes are uniform in quantityacross all non-peaceful difficulties. Rather than making it like this:
Easy: No zombie hordes or reinforcements
Normal: Limited zombie hordes with limited/ no reinforcement capabilities
Hard: The current state of zombie apocalypses.
The 1.6.2 update made it such that people only interested in relaxed, limited combat on Easy difficulty with intentions to complete a house 24/7 can no longer do so without being raped by ten or so zombies. To summarize the words of previous posters in the earliest pages, I must pose this question: Why are there no direct addresses to the argument that there can be variations in the current zombie system across all three difficulties? Proponents of the current system seem to ignore (Or forget, at least.) the difficulty setting in the game...
If you want to be able to patch a creeper hole at night with only sporadic zombies coming at you, the developers should make it such that Easy will be the perfect match. The current system of zombie generation should be present only in Hard and (To a somewhat dilute extend) Normal difficulties.
Yeah they are really op, skeletons that almost never miss and zombie hordes. At least make turrets or something that you can make out of dispensers so my house is safe.

It seems that a lot of players have missed the point that night in Minecraft was and is supposed to be a dangerous time. I believe it is the intention of Mojang that you should not go out to patch up a creeper blast at night time. For casual players who don't want any zombie hordes, DON'T go out at night! The zombies don't multiply if you don't engage them, they only have a chance to spawn more if you strike them. I would think casual players would be even more inclined to sleep at night and avoid the whole thing. Again this is just my opinion, I don't know what Jeb, Dinnerbone and the others think, but I think they have always wanted Minecraft to be a challenging game, especially at night. Think about it, the game has no introduction or tutorial mode. It starts you alone in a world with no shelter, and only 15 minutes before enemies start spawning. That does not sound like a game that is designed to be casually played with great success. But Minecraft comes with peaceful and creative settings which do allow for casual playing. So for all the people saying I've missed the point about zombie hordes and their spawning in ability, perhaps you've missed Mojang's point of putting in peaceful and creative modes. Again just my opinion.
That being said, I can see the point, that on easy difficulty zombies should not have their spawn in ability. Not because nights are dangerous, that is a foundation of Minecraft, but so caving is not so difficult on easy mode. I am certainly not against that, as a change to easy mode would have no effect on anyone who chooses to play on normal or higher.

Alright, all of you who like the changes are MISSING THE POINT COMPLETELY. it really seems that all you care about is having the game changed to specifically what you want with no regard to the rest of the community or any regard to what the game has become. It's all "ermagerd minecraft to ez, ermagerd ez why you no fun, can haz moar blood n moar violence plox". seriously you miss the point. this game is easy to you because of how easy it is to "break" the game, but isn't that the trouble with all open ended open world games (oblivion, skyrim, fallout series, etc). Not every game can be call of duty of god of war, so 1 get over yourselves, i know you win more flies with honey but it seems none of you are listening to what the ACTUAL problem is. In fact, not once, NOT ONCE on this forum or others related to it, have I heard anyone, ANYONE, complain about adding new challenges or challenging elements, NOT ONE.
What people are bothered by is that the zombie changes ARE NOT HARD, there is no change in actual difficulty. HOWEVER, the game has become annoying and frustrating to play because of the near ENDLESS, RESOURCE DRAINING, FUN SUCKING onslaught of zombies that does nothing more than ware on many players patience and stockpiles. It isn't fair to the whole of the community to have a game ruined due to bad changes just because a select few people who like to play more extreme versions like the changes.
What many people are suggesting is to put the new changes in the place that people who like them will use them and remove them from the places (survival normal and easy) that many players don't. if the game was too easy to begin with I highly doubt that any of you play on easy or normal so it is absolutely beyond me why you must so aggressively defend forcing other players who don't play at that difficulty to deal with the changes. Have you considered that perhaps it is you you needs to deal with the way things are. Not to sound like I'm dismissing the super hardcore combat players of minecraft but there are maps and mods designed to tweak the game specifically for you and your play style, why not try some of the mods. Often I find myself wanting something a little more challenging and so I do enjoy the mods myself.
What the game really needs are optional and semi optional challenges such as bandit forts, random over world bandit encounters, region locked dragons and dragon lairs, other optional assembly-required bosses like the wither boss. changes like these allow players to avoid such confrontations if they so choose and pay the price for getting to curious or fool hardy. At the same time, with new challenges comes new and great rewards so for those who enjoy the challenges there should be rewards worthy of the fight and also tempting to those who want them.
Also, everyone stating that the zombies is false difficulty are correct, they are not challenging, just annoying. dying because you run out of weapons and armor after one encounter is insane and a waste of time and materials. also, in every zombie apocalypse setting i've ever seen, i've seen people avoiding zombie hordes with mere feet between them, so the no 40 block (120 meter [360ish feet]) is no where near realistic in terms of zombie lore. Plus, minecraft is not a zombie apocalypse game (there are mods for that) no matter what type of game you try to argue it is, zombie apocalypse is simply not one of them.
You could not be more wrong, in fact the argument is exactly the opposite. Unless you find the game too hard and simply don't want to admit that you play the game on easy and enjoy the xp farming. seriously, there are many many reasons as to why this change should be tied to difficulty. also here is what we call a troll, some ignorant blogger who, rather than enjoying the game, enjoys the fact that this game is making others experience more miserable. not all of us can be so bored that we must encourage and take pleasure from the aggravation and loss of others. take a good look at his comment and remember: don't feed the trolls.
Your aggravation is getting the better of you. You misread the post you're responding to here. That person was saying the same thing you are.

you like the game hard, so you can play the game on hard, why are you so against having more annoying features that are only combat heavy restricted to difficulties played by people who want the game hard? why is it so wrong to have a casual game, gain not every game can be call of duty or god of war so stop trying to change minecraft into what it is not.
furthermore, your argument cleverly avoids the problems with zombies underground, but of course you wouldn't want to be the jerk who tells people not to play the game at all, after all saying "if you don't like zombies at night stay in side or use a bed" is just one step away from saying "and don't go underground, in fact don't play the game at all". how about this why don't YOU go find a different game to play if you are not happy with this game. why don't YOU go find something fun to do. Huh? not so pleasant when it is you being told to leave the community now is it.
Again I am not against those who want a more challenge, but there are mods and maps designed specifically for you. Also, I am not agianst the developers adding more challenging elements, but this is not the way to do it. it comes off as a cheap attempt to pleasure the COD like fan base at everyone else's expense.
the developers need to take the time to add legitimate challenges that can be engaged or avoided at will, it adds to the challenge and to the sense of adventure rather than limiting exploration to a mere few blocks, which than compounds with the increased regional difficulty making things only worse. It is fine if people don't understand the problem, but let's not be so adamantly opposed to comprehensive solutions.

Problem: Once you normalize the learning curve such that it is possible for a total newbie to sneak out just to patch up the Creeper hold in his house, it is rather rude to suddenly impose "Normal-"playerbase standards on the grandmother/ 6 year old/ casual gamer by just telling them to sleep in a cot. (Not to mention it, but this is also an impossible task on massive servers with hundreds of players running about. As long as that one punk is running about in his house, it is nigh impossible to fast-forward the game to morning- leaving us to conclude with being forced to wait out the night. Spiders ascending windows also, according to a previous poster [Apologies for forgetting your name], disrupt the sleep process with the "There are monsters outside" prompt.)
Another problem lies in that Peaceful mode makes it nigh impossible to obtain certain items: On peaceful, green slimes will despawn under the current spawning mechanics. By just shrugging casual gamers to "Play on peaceful," this argument leaves some rather gaping shortages in slimes and Ender Pearls used not only in Vanilla reactions but also in other mods. There are those who do not want to be forced to "cheat" on Creative mode just to finish that sticky piston's construction, we must remember. As such, it is preposterous to introduce a massive, sudden leap in difficulty between Peaceful and "Easy" when multiplying zombie hordes and such are more characteristic of a "Normal" difficulty.
With my last point above, I can at least agree with you that Easy mode should have the zombies nerfed of all replication ability, though. Thank you for listening.
I'm not telling people what to play, I'm simply saying that the developers of Minecraft have already provided many options for play styles. If you think that's patronizing that's your own opinion.

For one, survive. Second, you just went patronizing again with the "your opinion". Of course it's his opinion, just as this quoted material is yours, so why do you believe it less valid than your own? The whole point of the forums is to share our opinions.
Just as the whole point of Minecraft was to mine and craft. The whole point, really, was that there was no one way to play the game, hence the lack of tutorials and such. Except it isn't anymore thanks to this. Every single game you must set up shelter and hide from the world until you basically have no need to venture out anymore, along with a bed to skirt any instance of risk left after that.
There is no sense of adventure or exploration, and the thing the "hardcore" players don't get is that it isn't that minecraft is "less hard", it's that they're more experienced at it. So of course they set up their shelter straight off, and know to make a bed, not waste time or resources on full wooden tools and sword, to wait til they have stone to make more than just the pick. They fare better against the mobs because, like a trained hunter, they know their quarry, and can hunt it far better than the newer hunters.
If these guys wanted a harder game, they could have gotten a mod for the zombie horde, they do exist already, and didn't require screwing over the playerbase. This is another instance of the vocal minority getting put ahead of everyone else who was happy with the game. But no, instead of simply wearing slippers, they felt it best to carpet the world.
As a separate point, the addition isn't challenging, just agitating, and takes away from the world.
The game is easy at the easy difficulty. Zombies deal way less damage on easy then hard. The player should fairly easily be able to dispatch them. And iron sword with sharpness or smite will cut them down quite effectively on easy.
Torches are not hard to get, all you need is trees. You don't even need coal. Not that coal is hard to find.
You have missed the point ENTIRELY!
I second this. What we are upset about is the fact that zombie hordes are uniform in quantity across all non-peaceful difficulties.
Me too, I always thought hard and hardcore was too easy!
It is fine if people don't understand the problem, but let's not be so adamantly opposed to comprehensive solutions.
ah, and so i did. let me see if i can edit that out, many apologies MasterRicky
