Boats are one of the most useful methods of transportation in Minecraft. They're the only way to cross a body of water without swimming, and can navigate through rivers much faster than a person on land. Well, until now.
Rivers and swamps were always tough to navigate through, with twists, turns, and lily pads to block your every step. Still, with enough skill, and a good combination of manual and mouse-based turning, you could make it through. But in light of the new changes, we have lost not only the ability to turn easily, but the ability to slow down at all without turning 180 degrees.
While some people had a problem with the boating system before in Minecraft, this was certainly not an improvement. The loss of key, useful controls only makes the boating system more unwieldy and difficult to use, sending myself and my friends into the swampy grass that lines my canals over and over again, without a way to slow down and avoid it in time.
I hereby start this petition to give us a 1.6.2 and restore boats to their former glory.

And to anyone who replies 'no' above, I would like an explanation as to why.
Wow. I haven't heard about the new mechanics. On my server, there's a swamp next to my house so that's a problem

Honestly, the new way would probably be fine (or at least no worse than the old way) if they would just re-enable the S key to use for slowing down.
As it stands, the only way to slow down is to completely turn around and press W (to push "forward" against the flow of the boat). That's the only part of the new controls that's really monumentally stupid. Everything else I think actually makes them easier to control now. They certainly turn easier.

Except they don't turn easier. Mojang didn't ADD any functionality when they did this. You could always use the mouse to turn exactly as you do now, except now, that's your only option. While the loss of the A and D keys are not as MUCH of a hindrance as the loss of the S key is, it still makes it more difficult than it has to be. Nothing made them easier; things were removed, not added.
I honestly think they didnt need to change the boat controls, all they did was remove the functionality of A, S and D while on a boat, which I think is completely stupid. I honestly see no point in this boat change other then mojang wanting people to hate updates more.
I agree that the loss of the S key its a real problem. If you go fullspeed, you have to calculate the distance very well to stop accelerating so the boat stops but its more probable youll need a new boat cuz youll keep breaking them. It sucks and i dont like it.. bring the break back..
for those realism freaks... yes you can break with a boat, motor, sail or row.
Going through small curvy rivers is about impossible now. The only way to turn is to go faster!? I can't slow down or try to stop, i have to keep going faster and faster (pressing w) to turn the tight corners, which just crashes me into the bank. I've already lost two boats to that issue. Also, pressing left-shift puts me out of the boat, but the boat is still floating on the water. Then, trying to get my boat back in my inventory sends it sailing, again into the bank, which accounts for the third boat i've lost today. Very angry about this. My friends won't be able to visit me on my server or use the other waterways i've built because there isn't enough control to navigate without crashing.
I voted in agreement. As many people above have said, the inability to turn without accelerating really sucks, as does the lack of a way to slow down. Even if the next update just allowed the S key to slow us and absolutely nothing else was done it would still be a huge help.
trainman,
Honestly, I can understand where you're coming from, and yes, boats are an important form of transportation across water, though I've always had a problem handling boats and even though they've gotten slightly harder, if you think about it, you're mainly always on land.
Taking a boat from one side of an ocean to the other is acceptable, as there aren't any windy paths that you may run into, but for example, if you're going through a swamp, you can expect to crash anyway. The lily pads and windy strands of land are hard enough to maneuver through and in a worst comes to worst situation, all you'd have to do is craft yourself another boat, which is just 5 wooden planks (9 if you don't have a crafting table) and in swamps there are trees everywhere.
The forms of water you pass are mainly huge bodies of oceans and swamp rivers, leaving out those dinky puddles you find here and there. The boat mechanics, in my opinion and I have no intentions of ridiculing this post or posters, are fine and it doesn't particularly need an update or reconfiguration. Walking/Sprinting is the main form of transportation no matter how laborious it can be but that's how we start and normally carry on with.

I have yet to experience this since my main form of play is online with Feed the Beast (1.4.7) and a 1.5.2 bukkit server. I will definitely have to take a look at this tonight though if what you say is true, turning only by mouse and only able to accelerate? That is just poor design. Even in the real world, you can stop a boat by rowing backwards. I detest the mouse movement turning the boat because I like to look around while I'm in a boat. Now, it seems, that will be impossible...
Yeah, it's bad enough I couldn't turn off mouse turning, since I actually like to look one way and go another more than once in a while. I guess I'm not updating ever, unless a mod changes it.

ok why are you complaining you can actually shoot from boats now and it actually is the same speed as before if you couldn't tell its not that big of a deal build a bridge then if it is I don't care if its 260 blocks longIt's not that bad just build a bridge use you cobblestone jeez

Think I will be on here often? Haha no.

Words Mojang lives by.

When it gets updated, try Archimede's Boats.
