Title says it all. The adjustments to the hunger bar are rapidly bothering me and I never enjoy playing a game where there is a constant hunger issue. It's annoying and was perfect before.
The mobs are much larger SO MANY zombies - whatevs - more xp. But they destroy villages FAST.
Already sick of killing 2-3 zombies and having my hunger bars go down 3 levels. It's awful and I don't want to have to care about eating that much in this game. This is my first negative response to a new implementation, but kill, eat, kill, eat, just isn't fun.
Hmm, eat Beef, Pork, or Golden Carrots; anything with high saturation. The game does seem to be getting to the point where potions are a necessity, not an option. Sharpness or Smite (in the case of zombies) enchants are useful in this case too, as you will have to perform less hits which will in turn reduce the amount of hunger needed to fight. I guess it goes without saying that Iron or Diamond armour with high-level Protection enchantment is a must.
I know most of this seems really obvious, but I think what I'm trying to say is; Minecraft is changing from a really easy game and the players already have access to the tools in which to face the new challenges so maybe it's time we should use them.
Gone are the days of running headlong at a couple of zombies who seem ignorant of your existence and smashing their heads in before they even turn around. Do that now and you're in for a night-long brawl. Best to hold back atop a tree with a bow, or bring your end-game weapons and armour to bear if you want to go toe-to-toe with them.
I'm sure more creative tactics will be developed over time.
Warning: Do not back up against a Ravine... Seeing masses of zombies queuing to flank you around it's edge will mean you're about to have a bad time.
But dude, it's not the "harder" part I'm hatin'. It's the constant need to eat. It grows more aggravating every single night. Plus, I think it goes down just standing there.
The only thing that bothers me about the mobs - which are really close to the point of ridiculous might I add. (Just wait - the posts are going to fly about how much people hate that) is that they kill the villages, my favorite aspect of the game, in days.
The mobs are still there in the morning (because you can't get them all) when the villagers (love the new sounds they have btw) open the doors and the zombies chow their brains immediately.
For example, Placed 4 villagers in the town. (there were a good 20 originally- down to 0) After 1 night, down to 1 villager.
Spent the most recent night just guarding the one house, so I didn't move a lot.
Took 4 cooked steak
The mobs come from like a radius of 100 blocks or something. They travel across the village and even if your walking along with them, they won't hurt you. They have one thing in mind and that's villager brains. And they know exactly where to find one.
Just the last few nights have shredded my iron armor and diamond sword (unenchanted, but should last better than that)
Plus, that town is pretty lit up with torches after my initial zombie adventures
Still, they come.
I got what you were saying, that's why I started off by recommending foods with a higher saturation, everything else is just so you shouldn't need to eat so often.
If it's villagers dying you're worrying about; if you've got enough time build a 2 high wall and torch the hell out of everything inside the perimeter, if it's getting late and/or already night, just block the doorways with cobble until you can find a more permanent solution. If this is in a world you've had for a while, and have a decent supply of Iron, then using Iron Golems can be a massive help against zombies.
Splash Potions of Instant Heal are good for village defense as they can heal both you and the villagers as well as damaging the zombies at the same time.
And now, for what must be a bug:
Lost the last villager just now while defending the house. He was inside with torches.
A group of zombies were rounding the corner and headed for the door as usual.
Villager makes his pain sound (which is heartbreaking, but not as much as the bat's) one time. Suddenly, he's a zombie trying to break out of the house...There were no monsters in there with him.
Two blocks of cobble and that door wouldn't have been accessible to the zombies at all. It does sound like you may have encountered a bug in that last instance though, unless I'm missing something.
I have found that on rare instances Zombies can hit/infect villagers through "corners" - places where blocks only touch diagonally. If you're working hard towards villager survival, ALWAYS reinforce your corners. I also always nudge at least 4-5 villagers into one building (with a well-lit interior!) and seal the doorway with 2 blocks of cobble. I'll leave these guys for the duration - that way, even if you lose the rest of your village, you've got enough left to repopulate.
Torches + walls will not deter zombie spawns - zombie incursions will spawn regardless of light level. Use numerous iron golems for best effect. If you're a crafty sort, you can also use raised walkways between buildings with redstone/piston bridges to restrict access. The key is controlling where villagers can walk and where zombies can spawn - and keeping them SEPARATED!
While that's a good point about the cobble and fences, cobble in front of the doors all the time(or dealing with it every night) just isn't what I'm looking for in the villages I build. I'm not saying that these places couldn't eventually become defended properly, but more that the player isn't going to get much of a chance to do so.
It's a fresh world which is what I do frequently as I can't get enough of starting over in this game, plus it's a patch.
Eating 4 cooked steak in a night without moving much at all and certainly not running is just annoying.
The problem is, it was absolutely perfect before. I don't mind having to eat. I love the food aspect in this game actually, but when it becomes a constant chore, Nope.
Jodahstarlen, I think you're right about how the zombie died as the door was in a corner. I just don't like to worry about the villages and have them go about their days and nights without too much hassle. Golems will help, certainly, and I'm actually curious to see if one can fend off some of these larger mobs, but it is just more of a struggle than it's worth. After all, there are other things I want to do in the game too.
I particularly don't care for how they beeline for the villagers from far away and will just ignore the player unless we strike them. I know they would do that before as well, but the radius wasn't so very large.
Editing to add: Also, don't get me wrong. I love zombies and zombie attacks as much as anyone. I don't mind spending time fending them off in a scary movie adventure kind of way. They are definitely improved in some ways. There's just the village factor that could get very bothersome very quickly.
The hunger drop, however, has GOT to be fixed.
I think you are being lazy. I haven't noticed anything with the hunger system being changed and I've played on the snapshots since 1.3. But I have a good source of steak so.. For your village a normal village really isn't suppost to survive without your help. Your village probably has 3 - 9 doors in it. The 20 villagers that were there won't come back. For every 3 doors you have 1 villager. You will need to put a lot more doors in it. Also do what Etho did and light up the whole thing and put a fence around it problem solved.
I'm only offering a short-term solution, you should probably figure the rest out for yourself, it is part of the game. As for what jodahstarlen said, the Zombie Siege mechanics have been broken since 1.4.7, so zombie spawning should still be affected by light level. He did have one good point though, it's all about the design of your village; a good solid wall and plenty of light has always worked for me.
I think the new zombie thing just makes them more tedious...
And the new hunger thing, wasnt it bad enough that minecrafters have to eat 10 steaks a day? Now mojang makes them have to eat 20 steaks a day? I find that dumb...

It doesn't even make people run out too, anybody with a half-decent farm will end up with massive surpluses of food.
I know because my farm is hardly extensive(eight cows at a time, eight chickens at a time, eight pigs at a time, 4x7 wheat at a time, 10 pumpkins at a time, 10 melons at a time, 2x7 potatoes at a time, and 2x7 carrots at a time) and I have stacks and stacks of food of all sorts.
If the game was changed so that my farm isn't enough, it's incredibly easy to double the size of it, it's incredibly easy to expand farms, especially with the resources players get.
You can't really use hunger to make the game difficult later on, it only makes it hard for people starting out.
If you find yourself needing lots and lots of food to replenish health due to combat, maybe it's time for you to reevaluate how you are entering these combat situations. Gone are the days where you can walk right up to Skeletons without suffering losses, or trouncing Zombies without batting an eye.
If you don't want to have to eat lots of food, think about, then, how you're engaging these mobs in combat. Did you really need to kill that Zombie, thus aggro'ing four more? Could you have found a better way to killed that Skeleton other than walking right up to it and taking four arrows to the face?
Again, I'm not upset with the zombie mobs. It's more exciting and technically eliminates the need for a mob spawner trap.
But the hunger drop rate is just annoying and kind of ridiculous. I don't want to be constantly eating to sustain myself. I'd rather have it be a factor to consider like it's always been. Right now, it's just a hassle.
And again I say just wait for the proper release and witness the mobs of players that are going to freak about it.
The new hunger changes only apply to people who are in combat a lot. It should not affect anything otherwise. The only thing that was changed with hunger is saturation loss during natural healing (This is NOT the actual hunger meter. Saturation is a separate meter not visible). If you're at full health a lot, this has no effect on anything.
It's a not a big deal, a single steak will keep you filled long enough to heal 11 hearts worth of damage.

So, everyone who plays survival then? The next Mindcrack UHC is gonna be short and sweet...
Food lasted me for almost 2 minecraft weeks...
If hunger is a problem, make a farm.... Not really that hard.
