I'm pretty excited about the coal block, because I always saw it as necessary for any kind of coal into diamond conversion.
I'm the kind of person who believes that everything has its price. So what is a diamond worth to you? One million coal blocks? Too much. 9 coal blocks (81 coal items)? Too few. But somewhere in between, there has to be a magic number that's just right.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Let's see, combine 9 coal to make one coal block, combine 9 coal blocks to make one hardened coal block, and combine 9 of those to make a diamond fragment, then from there combine 9 to make a diamond.
I don't even know what the math amounts to, I just figured people would hate the idea unless it was unreasonable given how common coal is.

94 = 9 * 9 * 9 * 9 = 6561
It'd take just over four diamond pickaxes to get all the coal to make a single diamond.
If coal ---> diamonds were to be implemented, the process would need to be a bit cheaper than that.

I don't think this should be implemented at all. They might both be carbon, but that's no reason to make it possible to transmute one into the other. Diamonds are a "renewable" resource in terms of being able to simply explore new chunks. I find the coal blocks themselves more useful for storage of coal, easier to manage smelting resources, as well as a building block in some cases.

To make the math a little better maybe do four Diamond Fragments for 1 Diamond. 2916 Coal for 1 diamond. Still no support though, just cause both diamonds and coal are made of Carbon in real life doesn't mean squat in Minecraft.
I highly doubt that Mojang will make diamonds craftable. Coal blocks were added to add coal storage, just like all of the other ore blocks. Redstone and coal were ignored for a long while, and they are now finally getting their own blocks.
I believe that coal blocks should be made with 4 coal. 4 coal=32 blocks smelted, so 2 coal blocks per stack. this as opposed to 72 per block right now, which means that you can't easily smelt efficiently while doing other things, until you have a hopper. sure it's less compact, but it works better!
Like, if you place enough coal blocks below Y=10 and they're touching stone on every side, in 1 minecraft month there'll be one diamond block down there.
This is minecraft! Come on! Minecraft is not supposed to be about complex chemical processes! Turning diamond into coal seems to be more trouble then it is worth

Haha! Did you miss the part where they added the brewing stand?

9^4 = 6561
6561 / 64 = 102 stacks and 33 remainder
103 inventory slots / 54 = 2 double chests with 5 empty slots remaining

Technically, it is a reason. Maybe not the best reason, but one reason it is.

It's a reason in the same sense that people and ants both being made of carbon means Ants should be given seats in governments.
That's not a problem. Just craft a million-year bed.
