They need to stop playing with the textures srsly. And yalls saying it was bright, its supposed to be bright its lava..
Are you serious? Gameplay over realism, and lava isn't THAT bright. Anyway, the brightness plus the hideous mish mash texture of red and yellow made my eyes hurt so much.

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
Oh, come on!
If a freaking lava retexture is keeping you from going to the latest and greatest version of Minecraft, then just get a texture pack!
Gravel was retextured, and you didn't stop playing, did you? Obviously not. I'm glad gravel got retextured. The old texture was hideous. I think the new lava texture looks great.
Once again, it's just an aesthetic change. Nothing more. Now, if they were completely changing how lava worked, there's another story. Fortunately, that isn't the case.
I love the old lava texture - I'm taking as many screenies from inside my nether cathedral as possible. I loved the way if you hit F2 at just the right moment, you could either get a glowing golden yellow or a fiery scarlet, or a balance between the two, depending on where in the animation cycle the lava was.
I've always liked the custom textures that highlight the crusting and cooling and re-melting you see in real lava: ranging from white hot to golden to red to brown to black and even bluish-black.
The new texture seems really blando but I guess that's what texture packs are for.

Crap. I just accidentally clicked the green button. Anywho, I like the new one better. It isn't nearly as painful to the eyes as the previous texture and it looks nicer.
I know everyone hates it when people b**** and moan about texture changes, but...
The new lava texture looks like peanut butter. jus' sayin
Maybe there should be a magma block, using a modified old texture, to look hotter. After all, LAVA is the product of MAGMA coming above ground.

I prefer the old lava, but when you were looking at a whole sea of that stuff pulsing between red and yellow... oh god. That's probably why they changed it.
But overall, Minecraft's look is bland, inconsistent, desaturated and themeless. Which is why I use texture packs.
Dude, I am almost positive that there is a texture pack for this. But in my opinion the old lava isn't that awesome. I prefer the one we have now, it seems more realistic to me.
I usually play with texture packs, so I don't pay it much mind, I like both textures, honestly. The old one definitely screams HAAAAAHHHHT, where the new one is deceptively inviting, like it's daring you to get close enough to fill a lava bucket. It's an interesting effect.

Watch me mine for crafts, craft mines, fall down shafts and do a bunch of other things that may or may not involve blocks.
I couldn't really tell the difference until I saw it in the OP. The old and new one are good, in my opinion. The old one is nostalgic and looks more like lava, and the new one tiles better and doesn't hurt your eyes.

Not meant as flaming, just stating a point.

Check out my new game, Legends of Aekran!

Old: Bloodied Chilli with Corn? No thanks.
New: Bioling Carrot Soup, but arleast its nicer to look at.
I want a crusting/re-heating texture for lava.
