Well, I find it takes about 5 seconds in a minecart to ascend/descend some 45 metres, which is a vertical motion of about 8m/s. By my estimates, sprinting up stairs should give a vertical motion of 3.5m/s.
I forgot what it was like in Upper Forums. Wow, I should just stay in Off Topic.
It appears that you didn't read all of what I said. After that I stated that I don't complain. It's just an opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Everyone just wants to get their voice in, it seems.
OP: I think this is a good feature, though I do understand where Dextrous is coming from. Either way, it was a long awaited addition.
Anyone who feels passionately that this is a bad change really needs to reevaluate their life. All of it.
This change is good. I like to build homes with multiple atypically-arranged floors and I utilize stairs a lot. It was annoying sprinting around then suddenly slowing when I hit my stairs. It's really nice being able to zip around my whole house now without speed patrols lurking at my stairs.
Double-checked? As if I didn't? Pre 1.5, sprinting up stairs is not possible. Go try it. And please, don't be so pretentious.
Maybe you should discount double check *Rodgers dance*. He said you can do it at an angle and you can (about 2 blocks over for every block up). Go try it.

It doesn't let me do it, so I'm not sure how that works. I tested the speed, and it doesn't seem to make any difference whether do it at an angle or not. And with the snapshot, I can breeze through my staircase. I wouldn't really call whatever it is yall are doing, sprinting. Is there a video that points it out?
Seriously, do you know what an "angle" is? We're not talking about strafe-running, we're literally talking about walking up at an angle. You can't go straight up the staircase. You have to ascend at an angle, which will be impossible on one-wide staircases, and difficult on most staircases that aren't gigantic.
Yes. That was precisely what I was getting at. Well done.
Go try it.
I did. It works at an angle. Fairly sure you evidently are unaware what an Angle is, though. Hopefully the video aimed at helping middle-schoolers understand the concept will help you.
And please, don't be so pretentious.
You might want to stick to using words you understand the meanings of. I was not trying to imply having greater importance or ability. That implication is not necessary because it is evidently a fact. I understand angles, and evidently you do not. That is your folly. Not mine.

You know, thanks. I really appreciate the thought you put into that.
I was asking what angle you were supposed to walk up the stairs at. You know, because it's Minecraft, you can simply walk forward and it will send you up the stairs.
And as for 'it works' I did a speed test. It doesn't let you sprint up them. It isn't sprinting up stairs. It is walking up them. Show me a video, and maybe become more mature in the meantime. I simply stated I thought you were incorrect. Prove me wrong. I'll gladly change my opinion on the matter if you did so.

Sprinting directly towards and up the stairs is not possible pre 1.5's snapshots. However, if you approach the stairs at a simple angle it leaves your with enough elongated room between each next step that the game won't prevent the prolonged sprinting. So yes, you can technically sprint up stairs before 1.5, but it's not really beneficial overall.
And I wouldn't say BC_Programming came off as pretentious, maybe just stiff-necked and rude. Not saying that's a good alternative.

Thanks so much for clearing it up. I didn't understand exactly what 'angle' implied, but I do now. So what they've done then, is make sprinting on stairs smooth, and more accessible, etcetera?

I'm not sure what you mean. It seems like you've already been running up your stairs in the snapshots, so you should have a grasp for it as well as I do. It seems the timing to stall the sprinting has been adjusted, or maybe the game just detects when you're on stairs now and keeps the sprinting. from being stopped. I'm not sure of the technical specifics.

This will be very nice. Although in real life, as others have stated, you wouldn't be able to run up stairs at the same speed as on flat ground.
Although in real life there's not naturally formed floating cubes of dirt, either...
You just had to do it at an angle.
No, I think that is incorrect.
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
I double-checked before posting. A practice you would do well to emulate.

This might help:
