I can't say I mind too much either way about the changes. I didn't use bone meal that often, usually on trees, and on my more mature maps I usually have stacks and stacks of bones. I don't think it was super overpowered before, and I don't think that getting food will become hard now.
I think it would be nice to have bonemeal actually alter the farmland tile it's used on, either temporarily or permanently, allowing it to grow crops faster instead, that would be a good mix of "not instant" and "still useful."

I totally agree with you. But since making it an ACTUAL FERTILIZER would be too complicated, I think the best we can hope for is a return to insta-grow. Keep the sparkles though! :-)
I would be happy with a compromise of 1 per wheat and grass/flowers, 2 per other crops, 3 per tree/giant mushroom, and no randomness.
There has already been a compromise and why not 2 per all crops? I think the compromise is already good but the crop randomness is a little meh. The Tree one I'm somewhat indifferent to.

I really hate the change myself. They should've kept it as it was. Bonemeal has been a tool for instant growth since the beginning of time and should continue to be used in such a way.

i think it would be better if they just worked on new items instead of constantly changing how stuff works bonemeal was one my favorite items in the game and now its pretty much pointless i think they should un-nerf it

Well, somehow I have a feeling that automatic wheat machines in style "just glue your mouse button down" are somewhat important reason why bonemeal got nerfed. And, though I personally like those machines, they really are too OP. Well, actually they make skeleton spawners too OP. It is just too easy to get huge amount of wheat, wheat seeds, carrots, potatoes etc. being AFK.
So, I regret those machines do not work any more, but I agree that they should not.

Someone came up with the compromise of applying the nerf to dispencers only but it's too late for that.
I'm glad they nerfed it. Now that we have all sorts of different plants to grow, using bonemeal to easily manage everything was kind of stupid. With this nerf I'm glad it'll add some challenge to the game.

I honestly thought the nerf was unnecessary at least for the hand used bonemeal. I did like the compromise except for the fact that is is randomized...
I think it makes skeletons more valuable and makes you need to go out at night more. Rather than having food without needing to do anything.
It makes skeletons LESS valuable, because their drops are worth less. Think of it this way: which is worth more: A chest with 3 diamonds or a chest with 1 diamond?

If 1.5 comes out, I'm gonna mod Bone Meal to work the same way as 1.4.7.
You didn't have the trees in the right location. It does not take two stacks to grow two trees.
