I'd like to see your source, please, because combat SHOULD be a high priority. Even if Mojang doesn't think so.

Okay that is highly opinion based however I have seen pvp servers most have plugins/mods from my viewpoint. There are lots of pvp servers and people seem to be content with them. I'm not against a combat update I just personally think it's not of too much priority. Also there's still the problem of pay to win pvp servers dominating.....(I've seen one recently that goes to $400 dollar donator >.>)
Okay, the survival server I'm on is set to hard and I do admit that there should be more hostile mobs/or some changes to the current hostile.
As for pvp I don't think that mojang has a way to improve it very well since people say it's the worst pvp system ever( I kind of agree lol ).
If you want something that enhances combat weaponry and adds rpg elements look up the bukkit mod McMMO(SMP only me thinks).
As for fighting large amounts of mobs for fun and strategy I would think the Nexus invasion mod would be cool(I've seen videos) especially for multiplayer but last time I checked it hasn't been updated and it seems like a hard mod to install on a server.
I'm not going to quote Kholdstare's massive post, but I have to say I agree with him. There should be more weapons, like throwable projectiles that are one use like dynamite sticks(string, gunpowder, paper), throwable bricks, different types of ammunition for your bow, daggers which have 75% durability and damage of normal swords and thus are half as effextive, which is fair since it only takes one piece of material and can be crafted in the 2x2 crafting grid. Also right click wouldn't block but throw it, for in last resort situations.

If you complain about something that is completely optional, especially something that you actually have to seek out or construct yourself, I will assume that you suffered brain damage as a child.
Just for future reference.

IMO the updates were okay recently, but they weren't exactly what Minecraft needs. 1.5 looks really promising, but do we really need more redstone RIGHT NOW? The update is good, but they need to fix the terrain and combat as the game is really easy and dull in every aspect except for building (and i'm bored of building...)
I don't think I've ever seen anyone stress their opinion so much in my entire life. This is at least the fifteenth thread you've expressed your opinion of what the game needs. It's nice that you're sharing your thoughts, but don't say them like they're fact. This game does not need a terrain makeover. The terrain is both functional and good looking the way it is now. You're right on one thing, and that's the fact that improvements would be good for the terrain, since improvements are always good for everything. As for the combat, Minecraft wasn't made to be combat based. Combat was a nice variation to the general point of the game, and even so, combat has evolved considerably from what it once was. But it is not dull. It's simple, yes - but just because something isn't complicated doesn't mean it is dull.
The game is not dull, easy, or boring. That's your opinion. If the game was dull, boring, and easy, would there be so many people playing it right now? There's no way each one is solely a builder.

Just think about it for a moment. In Minecraft, you can build literally anything imaginable, and even some things that aren't thanks to redstone. Oh, yeah, and combat consists of spamming the mouse button or holding down the right mouse button and aiming, and even though you have an infinite world to explore there's nothing worth exploring beyond your immediate surroundings because it's all the same and all you need is a couple of resources from one biome before you have no purpose for the biome again. The main features of Minecraft in a nutshell.
This game does not need a terrain makeover. The terrain is both functional (that it is) and good looking (subjective) the way it is now.
Yes, it works and it does what it needs to do: provide a world in which the player can play in. But this is Minecraft we're talking about, not some crappy second-rate knockoff.
And, it's not really about looking good; that's subjective. Many people hate it's guts, whereas some people (like you) like it. That's irrelevant. The point is, is that with the way the terrain works there's no point in exploring since everything looks the same. I might have just found a forest across that ocean, but why did I bother looking? There's another forest in my backyard that looks just like it. I might have just found a village, but all i'll do is loot the chest and be on my merry way; there's another village much closer to my house that would be easier to trade with, and the goods are the same everywhere you go. I might have just found a desert/jungle temple, but I can get the loot somewhere else (it's not unique at all) and they're always the same anyway.
And THAT is a fact.
You're right on one thing, and that's the fact that improvements would be good for the terrain, since improvements are always good for everything.
No comment here, move along.
As for the combat, Minecraft wasn't made to be combat based. Combat was a nice variation to the general point of the game, and even so, combat has evolved considerably from what it once was.
Really? Swords gained the ability to block in 1.8, but who uses it? It's faster to just stab the enemy. Bows were improved a lot in 1.8, but bows themselves aren't really all that useful unless you're in the Nether, you're in PVP, or you don't have an iron or diamond sword and you don't have the health or armor to fight in melee.
But it is not dull. It's simple, yes - but just because something isn't complicated doesn't mean it is dull.
Seems pretty dull to me. Skyrim might have had a simple combat system, but at least it required strategy to some extent, since there's a (bigger) advantage to being stealthy, you can actually block attacks if you have a shield and you can block them kinda well without one, and there's a bigger variety of "weapons" (shield and 1h, two-handed, dual wielding, archery, and magic) to use rather than just two (sword and bow). And, if you aren't going to make the player's attacks more varied, why not just make the mob's attacks more varied (and more dodgeable) so that they actually pose a challenge?
The game is not dull, easy, or boring. That's your opinion. If the game was dull, boring, and easy, would there be so many people playing it right now? There's no way each one is solely a builder.
Maybe because there are no restrictions (besides the 500000000 restrictions on terrain) and that you're free to do anything you want? Maybe because the success of beta drove it in to youtube and various other places and it's presence lingered forever even after it withered down from it's originally lofty position? Maybe because i'm insane, or people just like the idea of survival even though Minecraft's survival mode is a shadow of what it could be? Maybe because it's unique and no other games can compete yet? I don't know.
Minecraft is whatever you want it to be. The updates just allow you to do more things. It would be different if quests were forced on the user, or the world size was limited or something but in all fairness if you don't like a part of the game, just ignore it! Better that than cutting out content I think. It is whatever you make it.
The problem is when there are big features that cannot be avoided without drastic measures, like the terrain (superflat or mods that don't really fix the problem) or combat (peaceful). I don't really like beacons. That, I can ignore, and I can ignore witches and bats (to an extent) as well, but one does not simply ignore an entire world or an entire major feature.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I believe it is getting better. There are definitely some parts that for lack of a better word are maybe more "complicated" than they need to be or have unnecessary aspects but overall I feel the game is going in a good direction.
I think one of the huge reasons they havent changed the terrain yet is BECAUSE it's so subjective. Merely having lots of complaint threads about it isnt even close to enough to cause a change there; I'm thinking that the devs are likely aware, as I am, that the negative players a always, always, ALWAYS tend to be the most vocal.... the positive ones usually dont bother posting about things like this, particularly since the negative ones tend to just scream at them. If they changed the terrain now, just due to the various anti-terrain threads, it would almost immediately change to a NEW type of anti-terrain thread, this time manned by different people who had indeed liked the current version of it. It would, in essence, accomplish exactly nothing.
I have no problems with the current terrain myself; I've liked it from the start. The only difference I'm aware of is not as much height variation? I cant think of anything else. Too much height variation, though (and "too much" for me isnt actually all that much, really) would drive me crazy, since it slows me down when I'm trying to get around.
I think what they really need to do is NOT just outright change the terrain AGAIN, but instead set it so that there are options for it at world creation. Give people, like, sliders and such to work with. Let them choose how much height variation they want, how often caves generate, how often blasted jungles appear as a wall of trees in the way, stuff like that. I'm kinda surprised actually that this specific thing has NOT been done yet. Granted, I dont think it's a huge priority right now, and I'm much more interested to see where the Redstone update goes. But I think a change like this would be welcomed.
It seems to me that ALOT of things with this game are subjective as well, which doesnt help Mojang in changing it, I'm sure. The combat for example.... definitely a subjective thing in any game. Like Skyrim there.... you say it has some strategy to the combat, but no matter how I look at that game, I've just never seen it; even with the magic and stealth and whatever, it really just puts me to sleep. Wheras Minecraft's combat oddly does not. They need to be able to make changes to this one WITHOUT changing the base difficulty too much, is a part of the problem, I think. *I* think the game is too easy, survival-wise, and it seems that you think so as well, but I know people that think that even Normal is much too difficult (yes, it's bloody baffling, I know, but it's the truth), and who have been frustrated by the game at times because of this. Changing the combat around too much risks alienating those players that want/need/something the easier gameplay. ....and of course, how many devs these days would dare to do THAT one? Precious few of them, feh, that's how many.
Mods aren't the [best] answer. Maybe short-term, if you're lucky enough to find one that's exactly what you're looking for. But in my experience, mods aren't everything that you're looking for, they aren't updated in a timely fashion, they cause incompatabilities & glitches, and they eventually become abandoned/spotty.
zombe's mod pack is one of the most popular mods of all time. It's in a horrid state now, with only partial functionality & compatability. Typical.
This may be true, but it's not at all hard to find ones that do what you want and ARE updated. There's SO freaking many of them. The sheer number of the things is likely the reason WHY people say that all the time.
And if Mojang would manage to finish the blasted mod API sometime this millennium, then we wouldnt have to worry about the things breaking down all the time, so that would help..... but that's another subject altogether.

its not getting better, but it definitly isn't getting worse, i have no problem with today's minecraft, sure when we all first played it in alpha it kind of had a magic feel to it, but thats just nostalgia speaking, the only thing i can complain about is that the terrain generation definitly got worst then it was... hope they fix it one day...
There is a major disadvantage to making general overall combat more difficult in Minecraft: There are many casual gamers who are not very twitch-heavy or good at first-person combat, and there are many of those gamers who play Minecraft. While I think the AI could be improved, you don't want the AI to become a drain on system resources, because you don't want to force players to upgrade their hardware.
The mobs aren't there to provide extreme challenge, in my opinion. They're there to mess with you if you're careless or unlucky. Didn't light your cave system up well enough? Skeleton shoots you off a ledge or into lava. For example.
While I think it's great to play mods like Hack Slash Mine (a hack-n-slash RPG-style dungeon crawler with loads of mobs and variable levels of difficulty), I also think it's not high priority for Mojang to improve vanilla combat. A good idea, yes, but it certainly comes second to the Redstone changes in the pipes for 1.5. Maybe 1.6 will be PvP/PvE improvements as a focus?

Hunger is optional?

I don't know what you are talking about, the new snapshots are amazing, they add so much to the game, sure some things are easier but they have been expanding on creativity and complexisity (however thats spelled) of things like redstone. I'm looking forward to future snapshots because of this.
