*Ahem* If I may intrude. Many of you know that I have quit updating and reverted to Alpha because the game doesn't feel like it used to. I wish to explain my position on the matter and you all may take your anger out on me.
Yes, I agree that Redstone Blocks should have been added long ago as well as some redstone items like the Comparator block and light sensor. I'm a professional reviewer for PMC Servers, so I wish to make my argument like I would a server review, Highlighting what I like, don't like, what could be improved. I'm going to keep from scoring because this isn't a Dog and Pony show.
Let's begin, shall we?
The Redstone block. I'm not a Redstone guy, but even I approve of this block. It should have been added ages ago, but I guess Mojang were waiting for the right time to unveil it. Must be the right time because those guys have finally given us the Redstone update which means they've learned to code some fancy ways to make it more efficient and accessible to the rest of us who lack the knowledge of Redstone mechanics, myself included. The texture is wonderful and you can use it for a lot of constructive elements in your builds which adds a nice Triple threat to this item.
While I particularly think that the Light Sensor is not necessary, I believe that it makes for a better mechanic than relying on villagers stepping on pressure plates. This could save a lot of trouble in the long run while at the same time simplifying and containing your mechanisms in a slightly cleaner form.
Now, I'm going to say my dislikes of this update beginning with the Trapped Chest. This seems like such a lazy implementation that could have been left as a mod. While it's a nice addition to Adventure maps and makes for nice storage, I can't help but feel that adding a Redstone power to a locked chest is anything interesting. Why not furnaces or crafting tables? Imagine the surprise if you rig your furnace up to TNT, a griefer comes to steal your iron, and bam, he's done for. It's not to say I hate it, but I think that it could use some polish, maybe it can have some kind of lock where you need a lever or button to activate it?
Then, we have the Nether Quartz. This also seems like a hasty addition just so that Comparators and Light Sensors have a crafting recipe while maintaining that it's a reason to go to the Nether. On the upside, I can't wait to see what the Milky Quartz blocks are going to look like and I'm sure that it will add some flair to builds everywhere. But, my praise ends there as I think this could have been worked on just a little bit more.
The question I'm asking, however, is what happened to the PvP updates that were mentioned? Did those get shelved for another day or were they not going to include them in the first place? PvP and PvE seems so thin now ever since the addition of potions and enchantments, often turning into a "Who's got the Best Gear" fight on a lot of servers, often the weaker players being hunted by the stronger and donators, making servers nigh unplayable at some points.
The final update block is the hopper which I want to talk about in detail because this is obviously a controversial item. To give it a fair chance, I'm not going to involve Technic, Tekkit, or FTB when I talk about my thoughts on this item.. I think it is nice, but this could be the first of many updates that lead to a "Technologically Modern" Minecraft. As of now, minecarts are getting an overhaul in their mechanics which makes me believe that we're in for a surprise when 1.6 comes out. Also, the hopper is definitely going to banned on most servers because GameChap showed how you can loot chests with it, thus making it a Griefing item. I don't really see much for it right now in SSP, but I'm sure that Mojang is currently working on ways to make mining a bit more autonomous rather than backbreaking work. We might see things like drills, cars, and other such "modern" items from everyday life which begs the question, Do you really want to see that next update?
As I have said, I myself have decided to stop upgrading and go back to the Alpha days courtesy of Minecraft Version Changer. It seems that these new updates lack polish and love and are more about pleasing the community for whatever reasons they may have. I mean, where's the steel? Where are lanterns or the lecterns? Spike blocks and Red dragons? Where are all the cool updates that Notch wanted and why are we getting a slew of other items, some of which should have stayed mods?
Not that the rest of your post wasn't great, too, but this basically sums up my feelings of this thread, so +rep. <3
I appreciate it! All I was trying to do is explain the disconnect between his position and ours in a way that he can understand -why- he's not in the majority on this.

1. You are either being deceptive or have misunderstood the GameChap video you've referenced. The video is about using them to get items out of (the newly added) trapped chests without "opening" the TRAPPED chest and triggering the redstone. Please explain to me what functionality of the hopper can be used for griefing?
2. It's been explicitly stated that there's no intention to make the game run itself for you.
3. If you believe Mojang will add cars and drills to minecraft, I can't help you. It's no wonder you lost your faith in the company's ability to make quality updates.
You have every right to play all the Alpha you want. I've had the game since Beta. Let me tell you, coming back to the game after like 2 year's worth of updates and rediscovering the game like it's brand new was the experience that sealed the deal for me. Almost everything I thought "This game could really use that" is implemented now. I felt like a kid in a candy store when I came back and saw how much the game continued to change while I was getting schooled in programming. It's the only thing so far in this game that matched that feeling I got on the first night, when I realized, "This game is everything I've ever wanted".
Now, I'm going to say my dislikes of this update beginning with the Trapped Chest. This seems like such a lazy implementation that could have been left as a mod. what
I don't see where you're coming from at all. Why would you trap a crafting table or a furnace? The former doesn't store items at all and the latter only holds them for short periods of time.

Not only that, but (thanks to comparators, and only thanks to comparators) you CAN rig a furnace to require some sort of PIN (or any redstone input) in order to empty it below a certain threshold without activating a trap.. And of course, you can do the same thing with the trapped chests, making their output only do something when other conditions are met or unmet.
Jetra, I have to say, you have a few fundamental misunderstandings about the nature of the only things you complained about. I guess that can be blamed on playing only Alpha, but that decision lies squarely on you.
In fact, I'm going to build a Furnace Protection System. Seems like a fun build.

I wouldn't say that Mojang is copying for the sake of ripping off Tekkit! These features have been suggested for awhile now, and Mojang as done a great job listening to what the players want. The only bad experiences I've had in this snapshot is some of the broken redstone devices, the comparator and the hopper. I think the comparator and hopper are great additions, but they are taking awhile to get used to. It doesn't effect me if I decide that I don't like them; I just won't use them.
There is a concerning trend of young players fighting the positive progression and development of Minecraft. Sometimes it seems these people are just 'bored' of the game or don't like the idea of change. Loosen up and accept it, there is nothing bad here.
... Mojang specifically stated for this update they don't want you to have to rely on glitches or mechanics that aren't meant for that purpose, for the sake of consistancy.
This, I mean seriously, up until now BUDs worked on the fact that when a block is updated, the blocks around it are updated as well. This wasn't a feature they initially had in mind while planning redstone, it was an odd quirk that players found a use for and then it became a feature at the request of many despite its buggy nature.
Also, you're nether ore idea is absolutely absurd. Up until now, what was the extent of most when travelling to the nether?
1. You made a b-line straight towards the nearest nether fortress, and set up a base around that.
2. You're new to the game and are uninformed upon the nether, so you roamed around in the wanderlust of this new place.
Either way, it encourages the exploration of the nether beyond what little there is to see. IMHO they need to add MORE to the nether, I mean look at the overworld, how many blocks do you see? Iron, stone, gold, diamonds, coal, clay, sand, dirt, trees, flowers, gravel. Now, how many do you see in the nether? Netherrack, netherbrick, soulsand, gravel, and NOW we have quartz. Also, think of what can be made of the stuff from the nether previously: potions, THATS IT.
Before you even, start saying how can I compare the two, THINK! The overworld is a full, infinitely generating dimension. The nether is a full, infinitely spawning dimension. Then we have the oddball of the bunch called the End. Now ask yourself, why doesn't my argument include this dimension as well? Simple, it is limited, it was MEANT to be limited. The nether wasn't, it was meant to be a place to explore like the overworld. Why do I say this? Because it GENERATES an INFINITE amount of terrain. The end was meant to be a place of exploration as well, but for whatever reason they scrapped it for what you have now: a gimped little island that serves its purpose well and as INTENDED.

You misunderstand me because I was just saying that Trapped Chests seem more like a copy of so many other games. How does playing only on Alpha make any lick of difference at all? Do you really want a complex system just to protect a chest?
Minecraft was fun...now it just seems like they're adding in a lot of mods. If you check out Reddit.com/r/MinecraftSuggestions, ideas that gain more than 20 upvotes are really likely to be added and those above 50 are going to be added.
All my complaints were opinions and nothing more, so I don't see why you take it to heart when you could have just read it and thought about it. I feel like you're trying to defend the latest snapshot. I was trying not to either defend or attack the snapshot, I was simply putting my two cents in in the form which i feel most comfortable. I'm not a redstone guy as I have stated in the post and you assume that I'd know everything about redstone. I'm a regular player and do my reviews as one because I believe it appeals to the most people, not the 10% or so who've bothered to learn anything about redstone mechanics.
While I can't really say much about the daylight sensor, it's at least a start to the more items being added to the nether's crafting pot. I see the use of it. Before we only had light sensors, not daylight sensors, and even then these use a BUD (as I understand it) which up until now, was a glitch labeled as a feature.
Comparators are a bit iffy IMHO you could do what they did before, but not as easily and surely nowhere near as compact. Think about it: function A, the comparing, could be done by having the signal you want to analyze be run across by repeaters, each standing for a number, run those through a couple of operations of " is greater than" checks (fairly simple for each check as I remember it a few years ago when I was designing a full on calculator) in which one strand blocks out the other, and have an AND gate at the outputs to make sure the signal stops at the correct place. The second function of the subtractor is just the same, distance gets turned into digital output which is converted into binary to run through a subtracting unit and again have that digital output go into what you need it for. I will say this again, these machines are huge, take a long time to process the information, BUT THEY WERE POSSIBLE. The final use of a comparator for detecting how many objects are in a chest is EXTREMELY useful and COULD NOT BE REPLICATED before this update.
Iron and Gold pressure plates: These are a solid addition to the theme of the redstone update that signal strength matters. You might have been able to achieve something like this before with clever wooden pressure plate and piston usage, but I'm not entirely sure.
Trapped chests go into the category of the BUD switch again, you could detect when someone opens a chest. However, before you COULD NOT tell how many people were accessing it, just that it was accessed.
Redstone block needs no arguing, its just a storage block that is movable and emits a redstone signal. Get over it, we needed one of these, just be glad you cant turn it off.
Hoppers are fine as they allow you to put items in chests. However I do disagree with the way that you can turn them into pipes, make it so they cant connect with eachother from the side and I'm perfectly happy with them, as that forces minecarts back into being the best way to reliably move items long distance.
TL;DR
Redstone Update hasn't done anything too drastic yet, just making redstone more consistent along with adding an emphasis to signal strength. Nether needs more, not less. Daylight sensor, trapped chest both relied on glitches before which are now removed. Comparator signal check functions could be done before, but required a huge amount of space, so it's on the walls. Comparator inventory check, iron pressure plates, and gold pressure plates are new, useful and didn't steal anything from technical mods. Hopper allows input into inventory, something new, but can be used as pipes which needs to be changed in order to keep minecart dominance on shifting inventories over a distance. Redstone block is the redstone block, get over it.
All im saying is that Minecraft is meant to be simple, and with all the new technology it will be similar to some of the things in tekkit. Some things are just better left mods.
I don't remember saying that, . You are putting words in my mouth. Im saying, If the game continues to add more and more technological items, it may leave some redstone machines, that took actual thought, useless. Adding machines that do the stuff for you takes out the fun of figuring it out for yourself.
Well it's slowly becoming that. The light sensors, comparators, these are things that could have been done before. If they keep adding things that do stuff for you, It will take out the fun of figuring it out for yourself. Already made my sunlight sensor useless.
Well, you make a good point. But if you had an accurate machine, the sunlight sensor is dead-on.
And i never said i hated the hopper.
Do you need to use the new features? No.
Must you craft the redstone block, trapped chest, hopper, daylight sensor or comparator? No
Can you ignore Nether Quartz? Yes.
Your argument is now this: I don't like therefore it shouldn't be there.
You misunderstand me because I was just saying that Trapped Chests seem more like a copy of so many other games. How does playing only on Alpha make any lick of difference at all? Do you really want a complex system just to protect a chest?

Originally, to make a redstone repeater, it required torches and stone to be placed on the ground. Then, Mojang introduced the repeater. Now, no one misses the old system.
