1. Nether Quartz is way, way too common. It's everywhere in newly generated areas. AND, on top of that, it's affected by the Fortune enchantment. I went in with a Fortune 3 pick, and came away with a full stack of the stuff after breaking about 3 seams. I notice also that the actual seams are pretty large.
2. Not enough recipes for the quartz. I'm hoping that there are more planned, but for now, there's only 2, and while the items made from those 2 recipes are pretty neat, non-redstone users will currently never need this ore. And if it's going to remain as common as it is, it should be more like iron/coal, and have *lots* of potential uses, instead of just 2 situational ones. And even with those 2, you're only going to need to craft a few of them at a time.
3. Hoppers.... I can honestly only think of a few practical uses for these..... and almost all of them involve mob spawner farms. Since those have always seemed kinda cheaty to me (some players use them, others such as myself refuse to), I already have no use for this block. And it's an INTERESTING one too, but.... there's just no practical application for it beyond that, at least not that I can come up with. If this block were combined with something that could SORT items somehow, split them up, whatever, THEN I could find a major use for it. Definitely a WIP though and has alot of potential, so I'm rather expecting this one to become a non-complaint later.
4. Those weighted plates..... what are they to be used for? Redstone is confusing as a whole, but these are the most confuzzling aspect yet. I cant imagine what they might be useful for..... certainly open to suggestions here. I'm assuming that Mojang is going somewhere with these but hasnt quite gotten there yet.
5. Redstone block: Make it glow!
Definitely the biggest things I want to see with further updates are more uses for the Quartz, potentially more Nether ores in general (seriously, I've been wanting some blasted ores in there since the Nether first showed up! It would make for great reason to explore it!), and things that might work towards an item sorting system.
This though, is a good update so far in an overall sense. Originally I thought I wouldnt give a crap about a redstone-centric update, but the direction they're taking this in now finally has me actually interested in the stuff.
Hmm. An interesting use of those, though it does rather illustrate the main problem with Redstone in general, which is that it's brain-shattering. I could listen to that explanation 20 times and it's STILL not going to make anything resembling actual sense. Not to mention having to build that complicated mess for *every* single conceivable item currently just is not even close to being worth the trouble. When I think of sorting, I'm thinking more along the lines of Buildcraft's filter pipes. They're not hyper-complicated to use, yet not unbalanced either (and they dont take up absurd amounts of space). Not to mention this sorting technique looks like it'd utterly break if too many items were stuffed in too fast (and my use for such a system would be to just dump my entire inventory in one huge blob).
Still, an interesting use of the things nonetheless, even if it is a bit screwy. I'll have to spend some time experimenting with all this stuff, because science.
Making nether quartz any more rare would effectively cut large servers out from using it. It only drops one, and not everyone runs around with fortune pickaxes. I plan on using it almost as much as redstone itself.
Not to mention jeb already said it will be for decoration as well (Probably something marble-looking) making people want all of it even more. It needs to be abundant.
But my only complaint is how hard it is to figure out how to use comparators.

They really need things like full world-gen options for stuff like this, to be able to have worlds set in different ways.
I can see it not being enough for a server, sure..... but for SSP, it very definitely is *way* too common. And at least with the other super-common ores, iron and coal, you have to go UNDERGROUND to get them, you'll only rarely find them on the surface; in the Nether, that quartz is absolutely everywhere. ....and again, the fortune pick bit. I do think they shoulda had it be an ore that requires smelting. And on top of that, the Nether is often less dangerous to traverse than the overworld (so long as you're not in a fortress).
Again though, I expect that some of the problems with it will be worked out as the 1.5 stuff continues to roll in. I hope, anyway.
My only complaints is the new inventory. It sucks and is annoying. If they decide to keep it, they should add an option to turn advanced inventory on and off.
This, holy crap that is AGGRAVATING! Inventory management is like half the game, doing something that can potentially "break" it will off LOTS of people. Seconding option to turn it off.

You say iron is okay because its underground. Nether quartz requires at least an iron bukkit and lava to get (most use diamonds). Which you know you need to go underground for unless you get really really lucky (like my 1.3 world lol) also the nether in its entirety is underground...
Honestly it seems like people think that this update is suppose to add nether content. It isn't. We will get a dedicated update for that. This is redstone. It needs to be at least as common as redstone itself.
And how is the overworld more dangerous? I cant count haw many times i'v either hit a pigman accidentally mining and get mobbed or a random ghast blows the one layer thick ground I was on, I find fortresses safer. I almost never die in the overworld.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Don't play vanilla? You don't know **** about minecraft.
Which Nether do you go to? Ghasts alone are more dangerous than anything in the Overworld aside from a griefer with a TnT gun.
Not when there's only ever one at a time, they arent.
I cant remember the last time I saw more than ONE ghast at a time. On hard mode. They spawn SO slowly that if you fire at them when they DO show up, they'll never, *ever* be a threat. The vast majority of the time, there isnt even one ghast around. Just pigmen that never attack. And they make various super-obvious noises when they do appear. Simply have a bow and some arrows with you, and you're able to just utterly wreck them. I'd *like* for these guys to be a real threat again, like they used to be. But they NEED to be in higher numbers to do that. They're waaaaaayyyyyyyyy too easy to beat right now. Even just normal skeletons are harder than ghasts.

I mention iron being underground because it requires at least a little effort to get, every time you want some, since you have to specifically go underground to get it. With Quartz, you only have to put up that gate exactly ONCE, and then you have access to the super-easy-to-get ore as often as you like, and it's literally *everywhere* in the Nether; you do not have to go to a specific section for it, or find it only at certain height levels. EVERYWHERE.
The Overworld, I say is more dangerous because it IS. Creepers, Endermen, Skeletons..... these monsters are *frequent*, and at night, they are everywhere. The Nether? Like I said..... ONE ghast, every now and then, sorta MAYBE, and they're very easy to kill and attack very slowly, AND they constantly make noises once they show up.... it's hard to NOT know they are there, and takes just a few seconds to flatten one. I dont count the pigmen because I cant remember the last time I've been attacked by one (if they're nearby when I'm trying to mine, I just shove them away or block them off.... never accidentally hit one when mining before, and I've always always always got various potions with me just in case). The Nether is SUPPOSED to be dangerous, but right now, there's almost no threat to it whatsoever unless you manage to waddle into a lava pool, and that's your own fault if you do THAT. I cant even say that I "almost" never die in the Nether..... I just plain NEVER die there. At all. It's simply too absurdly easy to survive it. Hell, most of the time I dont get HIT by anything either. The forts with the Blazes are the only exception, and even then, a simple anti-fire potion utterly removes the threat.
Obviously, the update isnt supposed to be about Nether content. But I'm thinking the devs are well aware that the place is kinda empty (no, VERY empty), and currently utterly lacking in reasons to explore that arent fortresses. And if they're going to add stuff to it, Redstone update or not, they may as well do it right. I think it's a good idea for them to add stuff like that though. Jeb, I think it was, mentioned that Quartz is also going to be able to be made into a decorative block.... that, right there, is at least SOMETHING that a non-redstone user can get out of this update, so that's a nice thing.
...not to mention that, the guys at Mojang being what they are, I've a very hard time seeing them focus totally and absolutely on just ONE concept when doing an update (not saying that's a bad thing, mind you!). Even just in ONE update there's already been multiple things that are not redstone related: The ore, the smelting of Netherrack into bricks, stuff like the inventory changes,
Aaaaaaaaanyway, I'm thinking, if there really are various decorative blocks related to the quartz coming (and the Wiki lists 3 possibilities there), that does sorta undo the "it's too common" idea, because as soon as there's decorative uses for it, it's possible to then need really absurd amounts of it. So that might help a bit. I dunno though, might still be too common, but we'll see.
EDIT: And I'll say again, that I'm pretty pleased with this update as a whole so far. Dont want to seem too negative about it or anything, as I'm well aware that I tend to sound that way much of the time.
I don't understand the problem so many people have with nether quartz being too common, it's really an illusion, nether quartz is just as common as iron ore, but no one complains about that, probably because you can't see it as well since the underground is filled with rock. The nether has a lot more open space so the quartz ore gets exposed to the surface and shows up. If you think it's too common, or just want a challenge, change your texture pack so that quartz ore looks like nether rock, in fact, just replace all your ores so they don't show up, that sounds fun!

I love this snapshot, and most everything looks epic, but am I the only one slightly disappointed in the redstone blocks? I'm not talking about the texture or anything, because I think it looks pretty cool, but if it's really only a push-able redstone torch, I don't see much potential for it. I was personally hoping for it to act like redstone wire, so you could make vertical circuits without the torch delay, and condensed lamp set-up:
Lamps
Redstone Blocks
Now you only need to power one of the blocks to light all the lamps. Just a suggestion.

It reminds me of the Terrafirmacraft ores, which look an awful lot like stripes.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

And Netherwort.
Also, i cant wait for the redstone block, finally something to counter lapis
I dislike going to the nether, so i can finally stock up on netherbricks quickly without much hassle. must agree with this.
Agreed. Also, with BUDs broken it's going to be a lot harder to make custom maps.

Oh come now, it's the Minecraft forums!
I woulda been surprised if there wasnt one!
The complaints in general though seem lower this time around compared to some previous updates, at least.
