If by terrible sounds you mean the cows' more realistic breathing sounds, they aren't terrible. But there are some Enderman sounds that are a bit 'too' realistic for my taste.
I find it ironic that a person who likely has never heard a cow moo in real life is now criticizing an attempt at emulating that sound. Two notes:
- First, and probably most obvious, Cows don't always "moo"; however, that is the most common sound they make.
- Cows often stop mooing without "finishing" it; much like the audio clip. Not quite as frequently as the game does it, but they do do that. It's rather off-putting. Much like the audio clip, really.
The only new sound I don't think works is the sand step sound. It works GREAT for soul sand, but not so much for desert sand (arguably makes sense for a beach sand, but while a desert-sandstep sound is believable on a beach a sloshy sand sound isn't quite as reasonable in a desert.
Like a few others said before me, the only new sound that I don't agree with is the new sand sound. It will always sound like I am walking on a beach, even if I am not in a beach but in a desert instead. The sound that I like the most that was added in this update though was the Enderman stare sound. I have been waiting for that sound to be implemented for quite some time, and now we finally have it. Also, if I recall, weren't the developers planning on adding sound packs into the game? I could be wrong, but I could have sworn I heard it somewhere. If they are adding sound packs in the future, you could probably download a sound pack that contains all of the old sounds.
I like all the new sounds, and particularly the new grass sounds, making it even harder to hear a creeper's footsteps when they're approaching from behind (especially if you're not wearing headphones/headsets).
and this IS survival mode after all. If you don't want to hear scary-@ss endermen sounds then just go on creative mode.
i'm amazed not one of you said anything about A: hitting skeletons, B: minecarts rideing on rails now sound like a rollercoster in a way...C: jumping in water has a better splash sound. i like the cow and first time i heard the endermen white noise i paused and peacefuled my self.

any animal on a druids shoulder is his family, the land under his feet his home
Someone who can create absolutely amazing music and have made sound effects before should know how to make half decent sounds. C418 did a terrible job on the new sounds. Fact, not opinion. It's like saying crap taste good.
saying crap tastes good is an opinion, and some people like the new sounds so stop ing complaining

Despite my name being blue_egyption I am not blue nor have any egyptian ansestory, wait what was I saying again???
Nightmare fetishists and rose-tinted players, God I don't want some of the new sounds permanently! (Like that stare and the muddy sand) Someone better create a sound pack that replaces those ASAP. At least there is a replacement for those pesky cave sounds
(If Mojang decides to go in that scary direction often I might as well request for a ditching mod)

I learned the difference between fact and opinion in second grade. Can i teach you?
If you let a few new sounds that you don't like make you quit a game, then you obviously never liked it in the first place. I've always liked Minecraft and I enjoy most of the new content. Even if I don't like something, I'm not going to lose my head and quit because of it.

I was going to give you a +1, but then I saw your signature say, "If I helped you in any way, just click that plus sign over there!" So then I didn't give you your +1.
I like the new sounds. Especially the new enderdragon sounds, but the bat sounds scare me. The minecart sounds sound like I'm riding on a train, so it's great.
Check out my mods! :-)

get a mod or something. They're not gonna change the sounds back.
Remember kids, when the mod crashes delete system32!
