Hey, I just had a creeper go through a lava fall and come out the other side and kill me! I didn't expect it at all. I was even laughing that the creeper was that stupid. I lost three picks, Diamond Eff III Unbreak III and Fortune III (2x) and a Eff III Unbreak III and SilkTouch I. But I'm not crying about it I just made my stuff back and went on with my game.

Knowledge is power. But in unity there is strength. Come Join the fun at New Equestria!
Creepers don't instantly detonate when they hit the ground, even on hardcore. You can test this numerus times right now and see that it's factual. What happened is that the creeper entered explosive vicinity right before it hit the ground, giving the OP slightly less time than normal to move away. It wasn't an unfair death in any way.
Edit: Actually, I did test it. It seems the creeper, when falling, does not make the 'SssSssS' sound, which must be a bug, or maybe the sound is tired to its detonation animation. Either way, you can hear it hit the ground, and even the distinct 'ssk' sound of a creeper being harmed. I managed to move away thrice without armor and survive in time.
Well cuss, then I've been arguing a moot point.
If they're merely harder to notice, then I'd say it's perfectly fine.
Seriously? Severely buffing an enemy doesn't make the game harder, it just makes it more annoying since you can avoid all damage normally, and then get killed by some idiot creeper falling on you and instantly killing you. Why I was opposed to the enderdragon - it's just a gear check, as is with the rest of MC.

If you can avoid all damage normally, then it's inherently a skill check. A gear check would be if the damage is purely unavoidable but able to be mitigated through gear.
I think you have things backwards.
The only problem I can find with the no-hiss thing we have at the moment is that you can't really distinguish between a Creeper falling down 15 blocks away and a Creeper landing on your head. Of course, you ought to be turning around no matter how far away the Creeper is, so it's probably not an issue.

I mean as in being able to dodge lava flows, skeleton arrows, etc. normally, and then when you're mining to have a creeper fall on you and instantly detonate. That damage is unavoidable, and therefore it is a gear check, as a point-blank creeper explosion will OHKO an unarmored player.

Except this is not what happened. More a case of not paying attention- it's unlikely the creeper spawned immediately before falling and killing them. It's possible, since a creeper would survive a 23 block fall and (iirc) mobs will spawn 22 blocks away. But then, if they had iron armour, they could have blocked it. (Creeper do not explode instantaneously, there would have been at least a half-second. Blocking would allow a player to survive, even a point blank creeper explosion (Though not from a supercharged creeper and not with no armour).
Do you honestly expect a player to be staring up at the ceiling 100% of the time? That's absurd. It's like saying that you must rotate seventy-two degrees every time the sun rises or you die. Sure, you can do it, and if you don't do it, it was your fault that you died, but it's still unreasonable.
It's not that much worse than looking around for mobs normally. I just realized you already gave up your argument. My bad.
Simple. Dont walk into a ravine you know is peppered with mobs until you are sure its safe on every level.
I mean caution.
Exactly. The larger ravines with two or 3 layers of ledges I try to light the upper portions as much as possible if I'm trying to make them safe. If there is something in the bottom that I want, I'll mine a walkway long one side to avoid exposing myself to above.

I already realized that my argument was incorrect. I had heard from several sources that Creepers detonate instantly and therefore believed as such. Obviously, I've been disproven.
You wanted to play Hardcore, you had to know of the update to the creepers. You asked for it.
If I'm playing Call of Duity and a grenade lands at my feet and I don't run. I just poke it with a stick. Well I die. Even if I don't see it..Well I die...
Granted you didn't hear it and that sucks. But if you were playing on anything other than Hardcore you would have just screamed....then probably and gone back and got your stuff. End of story.
But you clicked on the button that said "hardcore". No one did it for you.
I mean....it's only a matter of time before you fell, went swimming in the lava or something else.
Myself personally, I have no idea why anyone would play hardcore. No one is perfect, eventually all you have done, ends because of some stupid oversite, glitch, etc. But you know the game before you hit the button. You did it anyway.
Now I know this comes off as unsympathetic. However it would suck being in your shoes (well what was left of them). And it sounds like you died from a stupid thing. So ya that sucks my man.
However learn from it and don't click that button again. If you do, and you go boom.....Don't cry about it.
Could be me. I started a new world with this update to see how bad ass I am at survival. I died within the first sixty minutes, and didn't write down my spawn point or the location of my base, so my stuff rotted and I had to start over again. sixty minutes latter I kissed another creeper. Did I write down my location prior? Nope......About six hours in I found diamonds! They were overtop lava......Guess where they and myself ended up? And once again....You would think by now I would have written down the location of my base.....

I don't expect a player to be "staring up at the ceiling 100% of the time." That would be stupid, and in a caving expedition, would allow a creeper to blow you up because you weren't paying attention to what was around you.
I do expect a player to pay attention to what's going on around them, and that includes not only paying attention to the ceiling, but the floor. If you're entering an area where you can't immediately see the ceiling, then you should be looking up. Minecraft caves are three dimensional, and death can come from above just as easily as it can from the sides. That goes double for ravines. When you enter a ravine from below, the second thing you should do, after glancing left and right, is to look up and check for creepers above your head.
And the third thing you should do is ascend the ravine and light up all the ledges, so that they don't spawn above you while you're exploring the ravine.
Dying from your own stupidity doesn't make the game "unfair."

For the same reason why many people play survival rather than creative: because its fun to overcome the odds, and create a fantastic home despite the obstacles that are before you.
It's one thing to build a 40 block tall tower in creative, where there is absolutely no risk, where you can fly whenever you want, and you have unlimited resources to do it.
It's another thing to build a 40 block tall tower in survival, where you have to gather the resources, and a single mistake can set you back an hour at most.
It's a radically different thing to build a 40 block tall tower in hardcore, where you not only have to gather the resources, but a single mistake can erase all the hard work you've been putting into the world.

That was teh whole complaint of the OP, that they don't make a warning sound when sky diving, it isn't a "bug", it was an intended feature that the developers wanted.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
