This. ^ I frankly don't care if it costs 30 levels to rename an item (though I would prefer it not cost that much). Levels are renewable. I can always go killsomething/minesomething/breedsomething/smeltsomething until I get enough to do what I want to do if its important to me. My issue is that if I get my superawesome sword of awesomeness I can't name it because its "too expensive" or if I name an item in advance I am reducing its ability to be made into super awesome.
Since by definition the items you generally most want to name are the "good" ones the mechanism as-is is counter productive. It doesn't make the game "harder" it just makes it less convienent/cool.
I am ok with whatever level cost they want to assign to the renaming (heck make it 60 levels), I just don't want it to count towards the "cost" of the item when it comes to repair/modify/upgrade. The name of something is completely irrelevant to its cost.
Renaming an item does not improve it what-so-ever other then making it easier to remember what you named it, and that is not and advantage.
It seems stupid that item renaming counts to the level cap.
Renaming should be free and not count to the cap, IMO.

I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.
I was not a fan of experience from the time they implemented it. It's a slippery slope to bad game design, and it removes cool incentives like building things and finding things, in favour of a lame incentive of gaining magical XP points and spending them.
But at least when they first introduced XP, it was only usable at "magical libraries". That made sense to me, or as much sense as I've ever expected out of Minecraft. The anvil doesn't even make this much sense. How is a bunch of iron supposed to be magical? And how does a lump of iron help you name things?
Here's how you should name things in Minecraft: a string, a piece of paper, and an ink sac. We already have signs, but why not "labels" or "tags"?
That's what I don't get about the direction Minecraft is heading. Whatever happened to crafting stuff? Whatever happened to creativity and discovering how to make things? No, today it's just "gather some magic and click on a thing".

if there was no level cap on the anvil i wouldnt mind it so much but it puts you over the leve cap so often if ur trying to repair and rename something decent it wont let you. I tend to get a lot of exp so i dont mind the level cost. why mojang why do u give us a level cap on an otherwise awsome item???

im too lazy to tink of something better to put here so i will put this. cheesefingerchickenpizzalemon wow why are you still reading this is is not amazing, not special, not all that original or even cool?
The reason snapshots are released is for our feedback on the features, if they are extremely hated or damage the game in some way then they are removed. We're giving our opinion, noone said you had to believe it.
Please explain to me how the ability for people to rename their items is both game-damaging and worthy of extreme hate.
Oh, look! I got a free car! Crap! It's got a manual transmission. Whoever gave me this car is a total idiot! I want this car to be destroyed. If it isn't exactly the car I would have given myself for free without asking, nobody else should be allowed to have it, not even those who rather drive a manual transmission!

Because Mojang is thoughtless that way - duh! Actually, I'm not sure it's not only Minecraft they're not playing, it almost seems like they never played *any* actually good game, that had thought and attention to detail put into it - or maybe they did, but it was lost on them. Take for example TF2, where fans have more clue about balance and the difference between cosmetics and gameplay, than the devs do around here. Or the netcode that commits such hilarious and basic sins which since the 90s are usually restricted to freeware, or proofs of concept. No really, I'm just happy it works at all, and that playing it with others makes it fun. But until it gets open sourced, Minecraft will stay mediocre and take two steps back with every one it takes forward. It's all its creators are capable of... there are no penalties, neither from their own thought process, nor the community, for derping around, so why wouldn't they. I'd be a fool to expect otherwise by now.
Sorry if that was too in-depth for some; you'll cope.
Hey genius! Anyone who wants to can get the Minecraft source with a tiny bit of effort. You think you can do a better job? I'd love to see you try.
In fact, if you make your own Minecraft and manage to fix all the bugs in Mojang's Minecraft, I'll gladly pay you a whole $30 for it.
What are you waiting for? It's obvious that anyone, especially a programmer/game designer as talented as yourself, could do a better job!

No, I think it's fine. The thing is that pretty much just playing the game you get XP, no matter what you're doing. You don't actually have to be in any danger to level up. So I think it's fair to have aesthetic features cost experience as well.
My explanation is that the feature is too cool and useful to be free.

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

Hint, this isnt TF2.
Yeesh, I get tired of posts like this. The "*I* think the game is going in the wrong direction, therefore it must be!" sort of thing. "Mediocre"? No. Try "excellent". There's a REASON this game is so incredibly popular.
That all being said, I do somewhat echo the OP's original question: Why DOES the rename thing cost anything? Though that's like asking why the bloody Beacon is so horrible, in that there probably isnt a sane answer.
Not that the renaming thing is of any possible use to me ANYWAY though. The Anvil is great otherwise, I just pretend the stupid renaming bit doesnt exist.
No. Try "excellent". There's a REASON this game is so incredibly popular.
No, there isn't. It was luck; a lot of indie developers get lucky and their thing blasts off. But there are thousands of great indie games that are unrecognized because they just weren't lucky enough.
I enjoy minecraft (Just as I'm sure most people do), but it isn't a good game. There isn't a congruent theme, it's terribly balanced, a lot of features don't really fit into the game in any way and weren't introduced well, and a lot of the game is just broken and unfinished. This is because minecraft started as a hobby and Notch had no original plan for it. As time went on he had more and more ideas that he wanted to code, but not because he thought it would make a good addition to minecraft, but because he liked the ideas themselves and the only project he had was minecraft (Minecraft, being the vague project that it was, it's also easy to just shove in any feature you want).
So no, minecraft is a bad game. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, I love the friggin game. But it isn't a well-designed masterpiece and you can't act like it is.

I agree with your essential point. In fact, I strongly agree. Aesthetic features absolutely should cost something in Survival Mode. But why does that thing have to be XP? There's no meat there. There's no gameplay crunch.
I suspect the solution that Mojang will ultimately land on will be to allow renaming items for free. I don't want that either. What I want is to be able to craft and carve my name into items. Or attach a nametag to them. Anything that's actually crafty and not a "wizard did it" cop-out.

I doubt renaming anything with xp effects difficulty in anyway.
It's just renaming. It doesn't make sense how it would cost any xp at all.
The "book renaming" argument is flawless.

It should be free, or at least very cheaply priced.
I said this. Two days later, my computer's motherboard melted down and I had to get a new one with Windows 8.
Irony in the first degree.
