Will they nerf silverfish spawning to some degree then?.... I know some people might not agree, but I can just see bad things happening with a new guy finding one on a server, dying and losing his stuff, then going in 15 times after trying to get his stuff again with a wooden sword, but only managing to double the silverfish group with each attempt.
Seriously a poorly handled swarm those things are more destructive than creepers. Im cool with them spawning in caves but, without a nerf (maybe like a spawn cap / spawn RATE cap) I can see alot of destruction happening.
In-fact between the fire coming back (I like) the wither (I think hes a "little" op for how he can be crafted anywhere.) and this new silverfish idea(nice, but the spawn feature for them getting hit MAY need a tweak) 1.4 will not be Halloween update, it will be the destruction update.
Before the merge, the creepers did damage only when they fell on you in singleplayer. Now that they merged they always do contact damage which makes them reasonably difficult in groups. I think this is a great new experience for mining because I usually just become a zombie while I mine.
I do hope that they put in a new unique mob for Strongholds though. Silverfish were the only fun part about Strongholds and now that they're standard fare for cave exploration, Strongholds are even more boring.
Don't get me wrong. This is a really cool addition. It just unfortunately also highlights how boring Strongholds are.

The thing I find unique about strongholds is the fact that creepers have an easier time getting a jump on you, whether it's going around a narrow corner or falling from a gap in the ceiling.
I just experienced my first time getting jumped by a silverfish while mining in extreme hills but, I stand a couple of blocks away while mining so I had plenty of time to kill it. If there was another one in a block above, it would have been a different story.

I've had them rain on me before, startled me more than the old bow sound.
Maybe bats could drop wings and silverfish could drop thoraxes, which when crafted with a glass bottle, create a jar of exquisite jam.
That would be some seriously nasty jam. But they should drop something to be used in potions. Maybe it would make a anti silverfish splash potion so they down't cry for help when you attack them.

blah. blah blah. blah blah blah stuff things stuff
This seriously does seem like a bug of some sort. When I'd posted in that topic, I was seeing the things all over the place, and now..... I'm still seeing them all over the place.
Even my ORIGINAL fort, generated well before the recent snapshots, which hadnt been getting Wither Skeletons or Blazes, is now just filled with them.
And the Magma Cubes are EVERYWHERE. They seem to have a similar rarity level to Endermen. But it's not uncommon for me to fight 3 or 4 of the BIG ones on one trip through the Nether, wether I stop at a fort or just head towards distant portals.
Really dont know what's up with that spawning issue otherwise..... I cant imagine WHY it's not working for some people! And it's really too bad, because the Nether stuffs are SO much more interesting when these guys are spawning correctly.
Now as for the topic here.....
.......FINALLY Silverfish show up! That's just grand.
That makes this one of the better updates I can remember. This and witches, yes, I'm liking this one.
oh wow, I didn't even realize blazes were supposed to spawn outside of the spawner radius... goes to show you how long it's been since anyone found a fresh nether fort on our server. Guess that makes tree farming inside forts a bit dicey if it gets fixed. Fort Charon is going to have issues...
As for silverfish in caves, I think as long as the 97's are all stone blocks, people will be fine with it. As soon as silverfish diamond iron and gold ores are introduced, it will summon a wave of whiners that will blot out the sun in its magnitude. Imagine discovering diamond, and breaking it only to watch a silverfish pop out of it and every other diamond block dissolving in insectile infestation.

Haven't had a chance to look, I'll try to check tonight.
Meanwhile, go into creative mode armed with silverfish eggs, find a cave anywhere, and spawn the guys and punch them. There's a pretty good chance of triggering them in extreme hills biomes, so if they're moved everywhere it would be extremely easy to determine.
The olddays mod is dead, sorry to tell you.
The far lands generation was epic, why not re-add it?

It's tantamount to having to stop typing every few seconds to swat at a fly.

Praise be to Spode.

Then we'll mine in the shade
Silverfish ores are the best idea I have ever heard.

"sometimes, wizards are so awesome, it hurts"
Next it will be silverfish...
-dirt
-wood
-water
-nether blocks
-sand
-gravel
-leaves
-clouds (don't know how that would even work)
-everything else
soon enough, it will be every block in a minecraft world would be a silverfish block, minecraft would probably be called silverfishcraft or something.
Now I'm fine with them being in stone, but any more blocks would be out of control.
If anybody wants this, suit yourself.
