I liked all the Minecraft related mobs. Skeletons, creepers, zombies etc... Witches have nothing to do with Minecraft.
Yet. Witches have nothing to do with Minecraft yet. Personally, I look forward to seeing how Dinnerbone pulls them off. It seems he's going with the Samantha Stephens approach.
Also, witches fit in with the "whatever we want" theme of minecraft.
We have horrible monsters from other dimensions that float above vast lakes of magma, bombarding us with explosive fireballs if we step out into the open, bizarre deformed three headed burnt skeleton monsters that fly and throw their own regenerating heads at you to drain your life away and desolate the landscape, and we also have kittens and puppies and baby chickens.

Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.
So @Dinnerbone recently tweeted that the new ranged overworld mob in Minecraft is going to be a Witch.
I honestly don't think that fits Minecraft. I liked all the Minecraft related mobs. Skeletons, creepers, zombies etc... Witches have nothing to do with Minecraft.
What do you guys think?
Okay, lets analyze something here. What do Witches, Skeletons, Zombies, Wither Skeletons, Wither bosses, and Zombie Pigmen have in common? They're all paranormal, magical, threatening, and tied to 'black magics'.
What do they not have in common? Witches aren't undead, which is a key feature of the others listed. On the other hand, witches control dark magic, and add a plausible explanation for why there are undead minions running around.
Anyone care to refute this position of witches validate the existence of the undead?
It's a mutated disease that affects pigs. The pigs are only carriers, and attack only if provoked. Iron golems are trained to recognize them as a threat.
If you're wondering why I'm saying this: Pigs, if struck by lighting, become pig zombies. Those zombies get attacked by golems despite not being hostile.

since we have both Zombies, Skeletons, Ghasts, and Jack 'o' lanterns, I don't see how a witch would be unfitting.
But all those mobs aren't explicitly Halloween-related, while witches are, for the most part. It really dates the mob and makes Minecraft really campy. I guess Dinnerbone could do something completely different like L4D, but why even call it a witch at that point?

Well, when I was a kid, I always associated skeletons with halloween.

Well i like the idea of witches, i am staff on an minecraft server and i normally host MobArena matchs [they love that :3]
i was told about the idea of witches with magical powers and probs could have some effects on regular mobs, i really like the new ideas for minecraft, witches dont really bother me atm
I like the idea of a new hostile mob comming, but i dislike the fact that they are probably to spawn on villages or near villages? I think the zombie infection thingie is enough... We will know more in the future im kinda looking forward for it but kinda hoping its not like i think it might be...
I have no particular opinion on the matter. It seems random and dumb, but to be honest, looking back, if I'd been here for most of the new stuff I would have thought the same. I mean, look at Endermen. But they're classic now.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Well, Minecraft already sucks so hard since 1.8 and 1.3.1 it doesn't exist anymore, so what does it matter for oh so real fans?
Seriously though, I don't feel like witches fit Minecraft too well, feel like too much magic - we already have enchantment table.
Well Minecraft actually sucked before 1.8 I've played it using MCnostalgia which you can downgrade your .jar. Everything lagged, you couldnt craft as many things. It was just like, survive and build. Now its more RPG. I dont know what you mean 1.3.1 doesnt exist anymore......
But yeah witches dont seem to fit Minecraft. But then again, Endermen didnt either at the time. Maybe Minecraft will give a whole new meaning to Witches. Who knows
I like the idea of it, but i don't like the fact that it is a witch. I don't think hostile mobs should be related to the villagers. I would be hoping for something like the blaze, but an overworld version of it.
I am not sure you can prove witches do not belong in minecraft... Snowmen, ocelots, pyramids, temples, and potion brewing. These are things that are odd, and people complained that they "didn't belong" in minecraft but they still made the cut and we all love them. That is because they were simply new, not odd or misplaced, just new. Unless you can provide empirical, objective proof that a witch does not belong in minecraft then I suggest you at least wait to try the gameplay first.
The only odd thing about having a witch is that the word witch more often than not conveys a specific gender: female. That is the only thing I worry about.
I know that the witches aren't gonna be dem plain witches with green skin, black clothes and a horribly annoying laugh. Perhaps pigwoman witches? *Chuckles*

To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.

I have to agree with you here, even though the word doesn't mean female, it is generally thought of that way. I also think that a witch is well... Lame, compared to all the more resent mobs, I don't know, it just feels to generic (that is just my opinion though). I think though that I have pinpointed why I don't like the idea; a witch would have to be sentient, just by definition, were as I could easily dismiss all the other mobs as being non-sentient (even the NPCs, they just don't seem smart enough to be sentient) Not that having something other then you be sentient in your world would be bad, necessarily, but I think it would disrupt the feel of minecraft as we know it (which again, isn't necessarily bad) and I would also think that if a mob was sentient it would have to have really good AI, otherwise it would be lame
Been playing Minecraft since just before the first Halloween update.. and honestly most things don't seem like they'll fit, then they get added, and you get use to them. If you don't like the optional content don't use it. Granted a new mob can be hard to avoid but you'll get use to it and adjust. I don't really care what the new mob is as long as it gives me a new challenge, I don't die nearly enough.

So you're saying humans were only sentient like a couple hundred years ago? Quite honestly I would even consider zombie pigmen sentient.
These theme arguments never end, just look at the gun suggestion thread.

No, I am saying that the NPCs aren't human, they resemble humans, but I wouldn't say they were human, and zombies are undead, so one could easily say that they are just reacting on instinct.
And I wasn't arguing this, I was saying that this is why I don't really like the idea of witches in my minecraft, but if they get added I will deal with it
Minecraft is magical. It has been since crafting has implemented. Or since hostile mobs were.

I think lots of people fear change..
It's named the "Pretty scary update". It is indeed a new Halloween update, which is apparently when all the significant updates come out.
It wouldn't work well in a Minecraft setting, but yes I completely agree!
