The questios pops up every now and then, and the answer for me always seems to be the newest version. i think the biggest game-changer for me was beeing able to enter the nether in smp. Or pistons. Or... I don't know, I love em all.
1.3.1 is my favorite update. My fps went from 8-14 to 180-200 using the lowest graphics settings. It finally allowed me to play Minecraft again, something that my nice/new/uber laptop was unable to really do in 1.2.5. Oh, and I didn't have any of the bugs people were complaining about. 1.3.2 brought the wall suffocation (both me and mobs), chunk loading lag, and other lag to my game...something that peeved me off until I got distracted with demolishing jungle hills.
I'd say that my favorite update is Beta 1.3_01. This is because it brings back a lot of newb memories of when I first started out with Minecraft, and also because it came with a boatload of bug fixes, and even a new client.
I really liked the Halloween update; the one that added the Nether.
At first, I was afraid of the update. One implement was going to be that the farther down in the world you traveled, the more torches one would need to keep safe from the mobs. I also feared Herobrine would actually be programmed into the game as a new mob or something. Of course, none of this happened, but this was the one update that had me waiting and got me excited for the release date. I was anxious to see what had been changed when I logged in.
The Nether was a new idea at the time. I had only watched videos on Youtube of the realm, and even then it looked scary. I liked that. I wanted to, one day, make it to the Nether.
This update was also one of the updates in the early stages of Minecraft. It kinda brought back those fond memories of a year ago .
No, I didn't start there, but I downloaded the file for it. (Don't ask, I lost the link.)
Remember kids, when the mod crashes delete system32!

Seriously, though, this was my favorite update.
