Yeah, no one else has made a thread about them yet. So here we are.
There is a block in the recent snapshots that, when powered with redstone, will activate a console command you enter into the block. It has three custom targeting configurations: nearest player, all players, random player.
My mind has gone wild with ideas so far.
I've created button transportation hubs, day/night switches, deadly traps, harmless pranks, you name it. It seriously is the coolest redstone contraption to date, in my opinion.
Try it yourselves. As of right now, you can only get it thru cheats; the block ID is 137.

Except here, over here, another here. Oh, and here. And another one over here. Here too.
I do like the Command Block in the 1.4 snapshots, almost as much as I like the Search Box at the top of every page on the forum.
I believe this block will take all creativity out of redstone contraptions. It does everythig for you.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken. This block is redstone powered. It will keep you from having to make an underground redstone city to be able to do things that the command block can do easily. So if you are making a very complicated redstone contraption, it dosen't waste too much space.

But where's the creativity? I like the concept of figuring out how to accomplish something intricate with redstone. Now it's jsut a matter of activating the block that does anything for you :/
Please demonstrate your very creative redstone build that somehow changes the character's gamemode.
A sign that says "please change difficulty to easy"
You do understand that gamemode options are Creative, Survival and Adventure, and not Easy, Normal, Hard and Hard Core, right? And signs are neither redstone powered nor emails to an admin.
Yes but you did not get the joke. Changing difficulty is just as common in adventure maps as gamemode is (if not more; why would you change gamemodes anyway besides the obvious?)

From the point of a very talented redstone engineer, you are right. But for people like me who aren't good with redstone, it's a life saver.
Well when you argue against an amazing feature without any valid points thats usually how it goes. Redstone can't teleport players, change gamemodes, change time of day, etc. This command block does all of that. You can't even get it in survival without cheats, so how does it kill redstone machines? And on that note, who exactly is forcing you to use it? Oh wait.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." §7- Mark Twain

I agree completely, there are also so many things this block can do that redstone can't. I think it's a great feature.
The block can't do anything redstone can do. People harping about how this is going to take the creativity out of redstone are the same breed of people that complain that carrots are ruining minecraft.

Agreed.

I can't wait to use it to issue commands for my Bukkit plugins.

Opinions don't roll well here, do they?
