Ever since 1.3.1 Minecraft has gotten laggier and laggier everytime I log in (To my SINGLE-****ING-PLAYING level)
At first it was playable, with only slight delay here and there.
Then it got worse, to the point where the world would only half load, and I would have 0 to 1 FPS.
Now I can't even join the game any more. it says 'Loading world Building terrain' for a few seconds, then takes me back to the main menu.
Whyyyy does single player have to run a server internally... I was playing single player so I didn't have to deal with lag...
Why does it have to run a server internally? Because its so bloody easer than having to set one up just for people in your house to play on it. I play on a laptop, not designed for gaiming but it only lags at certain times when something big is happening, something tells me you might be maiking it sound worse than it actually is, but I belive you!
I'm not trying to set up a server for people to play on. I'm trying to play single player, by myself. Pretty much for the reason that there's usually no lag.
Making it sound worse than it is? I can't even open my world any more. It's pretty straight forward.
Everything else is pretty much how I described it. There was a little bit of lag, mostly noticeable when on my minecart. Often the world wouldn't load and I'd fall through the earth, have to relog only to have myself a million miles away from my minecart.
Then it got worse. The last few times I could actually log in my FPS never went higher than 1. (It's usually at 100+) Half the level wouldn't load, I could move for a few seconds before it crashed.
What kinds of settings are you using, and how much memory are you giving it?
In my case what made the difference was giving the game *way* more memory; as in, 8 gigs of RAM or so to mess with. Wether it needs THAT many I dont know, but....
SOME lag can be expected with the current version of the game, but..... not anywhere remotely near that much, it shouldnt be doing that.

It was fine before 1.3.1
I'm sure my computer is more than capable of running Minecraft :\ I play most other recent game at max/near max graphics.
How do you give it more memory? You mean just putting more in your computer or is a setting you can change?
Why don't you post your laptop's specs and we'll go from there? I have three computers, all of which run Minecraft just fine and the hardware between them all is quite different. Also what version of Java are you running and is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Really? Can you play Crysis 2 on max graphics? It takes a custom-built rig to do that.
Even Alienware towers can barely play many recent games at max graphics. Max graphics usually calls for a 4-core CPU or above, at least 8GB RAM, and dual discrete GPU's of the latest HD 79## or GTX 5## range.

i know Minecraft can be odd and not work on some high-end computers, but if you have a computer like that and it only plays at 0-1 fps you must be living somewhere where reality is very much warped. define your idea of "recent games" please?

Actually no, he's completely right about that. The OP I mean.
My own machine *is* one of those custom-built machines that will run absolutely anything at max settings without a hitch (and was stupidly expensive), but in the past, Minecraft has had all sorts of random problems on it. Your PC can be super-powered, but the game itself is only as good as it's screwball coding is.... much as I like Mojang and Notch and Jeb and all them, this IS a really, really buggy game at times.... and it's also only as good as Java itself, which is also very screwy at times. Various other things can also intervene at times and cause trouble, depending on exactly what is installed/running, what specific drivers you have.... fun stuff like that.

Most people just use a batch file to do this. It's not JUST Minecraft's fault that it has memory issues.... it's also the fault of Java itself. Java defaults to giving the game, well, not very much memory at all. Why? Because Java. Which seriously seems to be pretty much the explanation for alot of Java-related problems.
The batch file I use to run the game, and thus give it more memory, has just one line in it, which is this: "java -Xmx8192M -jar Minecraft.exe"
That's it. Forces freaking Java to use a full 8 gigs of ram wether it wants to or not, thus giving Minecraft access to it. I havent had any more screwy crashes since then, or much in the way of other problems. The game had been trying to run on ONE gig or less before this, which it seems isnt even close to enough.
Note though that using THAT many gigs will not work if you are running the 32-bit version of Windows, because DERP. It'll be restricted to 3 gigs, no more, in that version of the OS.

Aye, tis a screwy game at times, much as I like it. It can be frustrating when it gets all crashy, since it rarely makes a whole lot of actual SENSE as to why exactly it's crashing.
Though, that only goes so far. A good chunk of the trouble really is just Java itself being Java. Java definitely has it's good points, but boy can it ever be a pain in the rear when it wants to be.

If it was simply my computer not being able to handle the game, why did I used to have 100+ FPS, still hav 100+ FPS after 1.3.1. And can still run every other game I play fine.
Even after 1.3.1 my the game was fine other than little lag spikes, then every day it just got worse, more leg, less framerate. Then I had to start turning the graphics and view distance down to keep it at a decent FPS, but now it's at the point where I can't log into my level.

I don't know, I haven't played Crysis 2 since beta.
My computer might not be the latest and greatest, think it's about 2 years old. But if I can play games like Battlefield 3 at max graphics and a lot of other games at 60-100+ FPS (Starcraft 2, Spec ops: The line, The Witcher 2) then I think I should be able to handle Minecraft...
The problem is, all this started since 1.3 Before that I never had any issues with the game at all.
i'm getting awfully tired of "can't run minecraft? Y U HAVE SHITTY PC?!"
this latest round of updates ****ed some **** up, and this "always running a server" thing isn't exactly working quite yet. i'm getting 100+ FPS and despite that it's still taking 15+ seconds for chunks directly in front of me to load, the whole while i'm seeing the underground structures many chunks away.

needs to be fixed, and it's a dev problem.
Aye, I'd been getting this problem for a time myself. It's very..... strange. And random. I havent the foggiest idea what causes OR fixes this one.
I was getting it with some of the snapshots for 1.3 (mostly the later ones). After sticking the 1.4 snapshot in though, it just abruptly went away for no apparent reason.

well then, i stand corrected. you must be one of the very few unlucky people to be hit badly by the merge. though what exactly caused your glitches and the slow decline is anyone's guess. i've never heard of it.
Thysios, do you happen to have any other computers handy, by chance? A decent laptop or something?
You obviously know that something on your computer isn't working right or is interfering with Minecraft's functionality, based on what's happening and the fact that you have a decent computer. So, what I usually do as a first step is to pull out another computer and to install Minecraft on there. Once installed, replace that Minecraft directory with your directory from the computer where your world is. Start it up and see how well it functions on there. If it works better than on your main computer, then there is something tweaked on your computer's files that is interfering with Minecraft or perhaps even Java's functionality. If it doesn't, then there could actually be something wrong with that particular Minecraft install or something like it. If that is the case, backup your world file, wipe out the Minecraft directory and start out fresh, reinstalling all mods that you have before placing your world back in the save directory.
As good of a place to start as any, really. Hopefully you have another comp laying around that you can try it out on.
I might have a clue as to what caused this problem. Is the area you live in anywhere near a NPC village? Because I've seen some threads recently about out of control village breeding. Over time an ever increasing population would hit your computer pretty bad as it's trying to manage all of those mobs and eventually it would just become too much, making the world unplayable even on the best machines in the world.
I am however only guessing based on your experience of the game progressively getting worse. It's the only thing that I know that could logically bring this problem. Either that or you have been breeding animals a lot.

Actually, that's a reasonable thought and gives me another question for Thysios...
Does it still do this horrible lag in a completely different world? Make a new world and see if it screws up just as badly. That should offer more insights as well.
I see Cubia trying to help the OP and all he does is rely in here to rant some more. He doesn't want our help, he wants to rant.
I see so many people in denial like the OP in saying "It was fine before 1.3.1". Well guess what, this is not the same minecraft build at all, it's completely different animal. You need to revise your baseline for what it takes to run it and do some evaluating on what you can do to make it run better yourself.
I also see a lot of people with legacy installs including the legacy launcher now having problems. Try completely redownloading the launcher off minecraft.net, rename your .minecraft folder to something else and then use the new launcher to get a fresh install. At least then you've eliminated one possible factor for issues. Especially if you've modded the hell out of your install in the past or used 3rd party programs that may have inserted some files into the install. And no Force Updating doesn't always solve this.

Pretty sure there are no villages near me. Closest one I know of is about ~1000 blocks away.
Hmm I have been breeding animals, but I've had the animals for a while and the lag only started recently. But assuming the problem was something related to this, is there anything to fix it? Not like I can log on and kill them.
