I want to see how this turns out. A very interesting experiment. I have always seen why people liked the old generation but I personally hated it. I'm glad that it has changed to what it has.
Indeed. Because of the large number of people who talk about this issue, one would expect it to be obvious which terrain was from which version.
From what I'm seeing so far, it isn't so obvious, and many (possibly most) voters get it wrong. This tells me that, while some people can pick out the terrains instantly, the majorty have a rather difficult time discerning the differences from terrain then and terrain now.
This stumped me totally. I'm not even gonna pretend to know which one is 1.3.1, which makes me feel kinda bad about my skills of observance
But I'm fairly confident at least, that image 3 is from beta. But that's all I'm willing to wager. The others I just guessed, since I couldn't decide. I'm quite interested in how this will develop...
I am just bursting with excitement over these results.
I had expected the results to be fuzzy, but I had honestly expected that at least people with signatures proclaiming the superiority of Beta terrain to at least be able to tell the difference.
It is one thing to get a result you were expecting, but to get a solid result that is completely counter-intuitive shows that an experiment was not only a success, but of genuine value!
Please, everyone! If these trends keep up I can't wait to release the answers. Vote! Send a link to your friends and make them vote! Twitter Mojang about this and tell them to spread the word!

That was a really fun poll as someone who really pays attention to terrain changes- though I bet I got like half of them wrong. I was able to differentiate 1.3.1 terrain easily using one method but i had a tough time with Alpha/Beta comparison. Really interested in the results and which picture was which!
A little offtopic:
I dont want to create a new topic, and this is something about land generation I guess.
I was searching a nice seed, flying around in creative mode, and I saw a big hole almost perfectly rounded and it goes very deep almost to the bedrock, like a giant worm hole, is this new? never saw one like that, and sorry I dont have a screenshoot and already deleted the map

Totally off-topic, but as OP I declare you safe from moderators.
Nope, never seen a big vertical cave. I've seen some small ones that were pretty deep, but without a picture or seed I don't know what to say.
I would like to participate, but having only actually ever seen 1.2.5 extensively, I have no way to determine which pictures are the older versions.
I do have to say though, it's both entertaining and saddening to see so many posters overlooking the oft-repeated fact that all the images were taken in 1.3.1, so it's impossible to determine which version it is by "lighting glitches" or "gravel texture" or whatnot. I find their combination of ego and ignorance amusing, but it depresses me to think people actually live their lives everyday so oblivious to reality.
Good luck with the rest of your experiment. Eager to see the results.

I am very impressed with the new terrain. At least one whole new biome has been added. After flying around in Creative for a while, I discovered that true snowy mountains have finally made a reappearance! I also saw with F3 that some biomes have sub-biomes that are just a very steep and hilly version of the regular one, like desert mountains. Not sure how long such sub-biomes have been here, though. This is very cool.
It's kind of hard to tell from single screenshots. If we saw more of the world we could see the arrangement of stuff and what's missing in the world, which is the real issue with the new terrain generator.
My guesses:
#1: Hard to tell between Beta or 1.3.1. Went with 1.3.1 by how regular the hills look.
#2: Definitely Alpha. The grass color and the randomness of the beaches give it away.
#3: Beta by process of elimination.
#4: Definitely 1.3.1. The "beaches" give it away.
I am looking forward to the results.
I have no way of knowing which is which, but the first one is my favorite.
It is almost funny how the argument over terrain generation versions is completely irrelevant to a huge number of players, many of whom started playing long after Beta 1.7.3.

I have a feeling that if the 1.7.3 terrain generation was put back in somehow and nobody was told, we'd still here about how this or that was so much better back in 1.7.3. I constantly see people complaining about how they can never find such n' such anymore, when I see it all the time. A lot of people are running off pure nostalgia and nothing else.

You get a +1 from me. Why don't people read,
Also to note, is the fact that you can see lighting errors in 3 of the 4 images, so using those for any kind of clue is pointless.
But honestly you would need to post a video that covered more area for each world and not just show a few cherry-picked screenshots if you want to "prove" some kind of point.
Something like this has just enough of an appearance of a scientific method to allow those on one side of the "issue" (whatever that issue is?) to keep believing what they want to believe without ever having actually proven anything at all.
I could take a photo in a city in Brazil and convince you it was taken in New York. But show a video of that same area, panning around and covering an entire area, and the reality becomes clearer.
Few people just sit around staring in one direction in Minecraft. Their experience of and opinion of a Terrain encompasses far more than just one specific view.
[EDIT] All that said: I'm happy with what Jeb has done to fix the Terrain Generation. The 1.3.1 Terrain is MUCH nicer than the low point of the 1.0.0 Terrain... I'm actually enjoying it again. I believe that there is much more that can/will be done regarding Terrain Generation in the future, but for now the Terrain options are playable again.

How wide was the hole?
That's alright. Sounds pretty cool. If you see one again be sure to post about it in the seeds section!
To that end...
*bump*
Sorry, mods.
