I'm pretty sure that I'm the only one playing, I'm single...
Same here. It's getting pretty annoying to see people argue about the lack of Singleplayer when I have this button in my game that I normally click to play it by myself.
I don't care if you're getting more FPS that's not what I'm getting at. Remember hitting a creeper back in single player and it would react instantly being knocked back? No longer, with an internal server in all SP worlds this instantaneous response is no longer possible. What you get instead is what you'd get on a very fast server hosted on computer, which is good, but not the same. It just doesn't feel right. The lag is there, it's undeniably there, and I laugh at you all trying to quote your FPS as a defense. Please go.
I do understand how this makes modding API implementation easier, improve server play, and etc, but it pretty much sacrifices SP for MP improvements. So technically SP is dead, killed to improve multiplayer.
Note I'm not "hating" or whatever you notch fanboys seem to think, all I've said so far is 100% fact.

Notch fanboys? its Jeb that leads now... have you not heard yet?
i agree with you on the fact that there's that bit of stuttering there though. from what i know, its caused by the client and server being slightly out of synch, even when running on the same computer in the same process. it should be fixed in 1.4, when they make their big optimizations and performance upgrades.

I'm just referring to the people who blindly defend the game and assume any criticism/complaint to be "hating".
I hope, although I doubt it because the SP game is essentially running an internal server in every Sp world now no?

ah.
in my opinion it SHOULD be an easy fix to synch it a little more. there's no reason it couldnt be, even though its running an internal server. most games already use this sort of logic.
What they need to do is make some sort of downloadable thing that allows you to still have the 1.3.1 update, but you can run it using the classic SP engine.
Sorry, I'm not really a huge development/tech guy, so I don't know if this is possible or not. But I don't really play SMP because I have God-awful internet. My computer really isn't bad at all, but this update has just made Minecraft 100% unplayable for me, which is a shame, because I doubt I'm going to still want to be stuck on 1.2.5 six months from now.

Just FYI, the creepers in my SP react exactly as they always have: I hit them and they react instantly. Mobs don't walk through wall like they did, blocks don't reappear and then pop again after a few seconds anymore, there aren't any huge lag spikes in the Nether anymore... etc.
If it makes you feel better, I'm only getting 40fps, though that still beats the 25fps I got in 1.2.5 without Optifine...

So you want 1.3's features, without actually running 1.3? Or do you mean that you want Mojang to keep up developing a second, SP-only version?
The whole POINT of the SP/MP merge was to bring the two separate games into one, cohesive system. You know all those MP bugs? Many of they major ones have now been fixed and the remaining few are the top priority because now Mojang doesn't have to worry about debugging TWO games, only one.

Unfortunately for you, it's not. One reason for the merge to begin with was so that Mojang only had to refine and develop one one set of code, so the merged the logic. This will allow them to ultimately fix bugs and make additions at a faster and easier pace in the long run.

Have you actually tried it or are you just worried? The latency you experience in multiplayer won't be present when you play singleplayer in 1.3..

The 1.3.1 SSP does not use the internet at all because everything is done locally. For anyone who is complaining about serious unplayable performance, how many FPS are you getting, and what exactly makes it unplayable for you? Please, please post your specs instead of just saying that you have a good system. It seems like your trolling when you don't.
Another hardware thing to pay attention to is how many cores, and hardware threads your processor has. For most processors the number of hardware threads is the same as the the number of cores, but that's not always true. I for example have a six core Intel processor with twelve hardware threads. For me Minecraft runs beautifully, but I don't have the kind of system that is easy to compare to the average person. Minecraft takes advantage of hardware threads to cut the time between updates. If you a have one or two cores, you might notice worse performance, as it is doing a lot more now without being able to truly split up tasks. If you have four or more cores, you will probably notice a performance increase. However people who exclusively played SSP will notice a performance hit because they are not used to sending and receiving packets of information between the server and the client before the game can update.
Eventually the latency in single player should be unnoticeable as the packets don't need to travel across a network to a server and back, but you still will be running the server functions in the background. Give it a while for more optimizations and bug fixes. Many games with drop in drop out co-op already do this, and people aren't complaining about those. Given some time, I am sure Mojang will get things back to normal performance.
I was just wondering....
SSP and SMP experience should be identical now that the code base has been merged.
What if I run a server on one computer on a gigabit cabled network and the client on another one. Would this spread the load over two systems making for even better FPS ? And how bad would the lag be compared to running the server and client on the same system (basically current SSP) without the local LAN delay ?
Any experiences yet for this setup ?
No, because your processor will always be faster doing two tasks, than the time it takes to send a packet to another computer, have that computer process the information, and send a packet back for the first computer to update.

Okay, I will admit that it had been a while since I went a whole Minecraft night fighting mobs. After the last 5-10 minutes I have to admit that the response is a little buggy/delayed. However, at least with my laptop, it is about as annoying as a slight fingerprint/smudge on a really nice television. It's kind of annoying, but not enough to ruin what one's watching and its barely worth mentioning.
I do understand how this makes modding API implementation easier, improve server play, and etc, but it pretty much sacrifices SP for MP improvements. So technically SP is dead, killed to improve multiplayer.

The bolded is not necessarily a fact. The CODE for the original SP dead but the mode itself still exists. It does not matter if it is running a server or that it is using the old SMP code. I can click a button that says "Singleplayer" and play a world all by myself.
I hate when people say "SSP isn't gone! You're wrong!" because then you would be wrong. The thing that ran SSP IS gone and is now taken over by SMP due to the LAN connection thing. Now don't get me wrong here, the only thing that is still here is that the client draws stuff.
Force 32x CSAA, 16x Anisotropic filtering, override a transparency mode over the application, and apply an HD texture pack then maybe we'll talk, sweetie.
Here's my framerate when I turn that fancy stuff off and use the default textures.
Erm, It's not good to get decent FPS. Most computers now days get atleast 100. I get around 300-350 with misa's...
All you need is around 60 Frames Per Second. The human eye can only see 20-25, Minecraft just has frames doubled so it looks choppy without 60 frames.
This is completely and utterly untrue. The human eye does not see in frames, and we are fully capable of discerning higher differences. I know when I game isn't running at a full 60 fps, and I once called my game running higher than 60. (it was at 75 frames)
I think that depends on how many cores will actually be in use. If you have two two-core systems and minecraft can use 4 cores simultaneously then there might still be room for improvement in this setup ?
Well Minecraft does not evenly split the work between the server and the client. If you were doing some sort of batch rendering or shared computing between many computers, then I guess you could get better performance, but Minecraft does not work like that with the client and server.
The server's job is to process input from all the clients connected, and send update information back so that the game can finish it's momentary update on the client side. It does not split the computing evenly, but it just lets's your computer constantly know how the rest of the Minecraft world has changed.
