The new 1.3 gravel is ugly. Its too grey and doesnt stand out against the other colors in MC. The pattern is fine, just the greyiness. Now gravel looks more like looser coblestone, just another shade of grey. We needed that purplish hue in gravel to make things pop and contrast.
The colors in MC are simple yet they all work well together. The color scheme of natural blocks connected and complimented each other. The color of sand is a washed out yellowish tan, which reflects the subtle purplish tones of the old gravel. Netherbrick being such a dark purple itself benefits alot when used with gravel as a complimentary color. It even helps the regular bricks blend in, which are otherwise almost unusable without looking like a fire station. Glowstone is the best example imo, It's has a mustard color that works well with gravel and allows it to blend in better.
Before you could have dirt, grass, sand, and gravel all around a building and it looked pleasant to the eye. Making the gravel more greyish makes it bland. It's worse from a distance when the texture is less apparent and all you see is grey. now around buildings it looks dull and losing that contrast makes the buildings sink into the terrain.
Below are two picture of my city Hastonia. The first is a before picture the second is an abomination. No I don't want to use texture packs all the time. I like the default colors and using them. I don't have to worry about a "texture traslation" when sharing maps. And I certainly dont want future texture packs to lose the quality that gravel once had.
Thanks for reading my rant. I was really upset to see the new gravel and I hope others understand my frustration. I doubt it will be changed but I wanted to QQ somewhere. It felt like JEB came to my house and stole my ****ing purple crayon.
Yeah, I don't like the new gravel texture either. I suggest finding a texture pack that changes the gravel texture back to the old one, that is what I am going to do. Either that or you can just change the texture yourself.
Nothing holds within the old-factors of Minecraft before 1.8.1 anymore, Jeb has totally obliterated everything. It is so plain and lifeless now, everyone who plays isn't as friendly as pre-1.8.1. Some people say to use MCNostalgia, that is such a shallow statement as Minecraft is much more than just singleplayer. Mojang and the Bukkit team really have dug out everything fun about the game since I have joined.

Before it looked like gravel, now it looks more like cobblestone. I don't mind in villages because I've been known to replace all the gravel walkways with cobblestone anyway, but it would look dumb in the wild... thankfully I do use texture packs. If you want to change it back it's pretty easy, send me a message and I can tell you how.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."

1.3 is MUCH better than 1.2.5. "Jeb has totally obliterated everything"? Are you ****ing serious? And what did 1.8.1 have that 1.3 does not?
If I wanted grey I would of used cblstone. Originally I hated gravel until I started adding onto the defaut village in my OP. I just wonder if this is an example of someone tinkering with something too much. Gravel needing a new texture didn't seem like a priority, did ppl clamor for this?
Personally I'd nominate Netherrack for a retexture. I don't really dislike it but it does clash the most with other blocks.
note* wtf is a zombie doin in pic 2? spawning didn't change in 1.3 did it? I just caught that

1. Netherrack is supposed to clash. Welcome to the Nether.
2. Notch promised ages ago that a couple blocks would get a retexture. Quit blaming Jens for this, he doesn't do art. Junkboy does.
3. Most gravel is grey. Pink gravel is fairly rare and typically man-made.

Why is there always haters on every single update?! Even the bugfix updates! The trick is to embrace the new and changed aspects of Minecraft, instead of a biased judgement on them based on what you were used to. That is why I never hate or complain on the updates, never.
Before it was an eyesore, now it looks like cobble.
Meh, was/still/will always suck. I still don't get how people can take gravel roads in their towns seriously. Unless you have trouble getting slabs or something for the roads, why would you use gravel? It was fugly, still is.

Notice how small of a change this is but it does make a difference.

To each his own.

tl;dr they changed it now it sucks
Pink Gravel
To me, both of those pictures look ugly with the gravel. Stone brick, or cobblestone is a much better alternative for roads in my opinion.

Thanks for the chuckle. No, I think the OP would rather run to the forums and whine about it.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

Although I think it looks slightly better.
