My computer is not very new by any means. However, in previous versions of Minecraft, I've been able to hit a comfortable 30 FPS running just under max settings (Normal render instead of Far).
Apparently, the changes in 1.3 were enough to cut my performance by more than 60%. I'm lucky to hit 10 FPS on the settings that I could use just fine yesterday, and even after cutting render distance to the ugly-looking Short setting, I couldn't even place a water bucket because the lag caused me to register two clicks every time I used the bucket.
I've heard some people say that they don't mind losing 20 FPS in exchange for the new features. However, whereas 120 FPS to 100 FPS is a slight drop that you will never see on a 60Hz screen, 30 to 10 FPS is the difference between playable and game-breakingly broken.
Every PC and its software environment is different. Try to do what you can to squeeze some better performance out of your machine. If your PC is a single core processor then it may be time to consider upgrading. I know you may not want to hear that. I know a lot of people equate minecrafts blocky graphics with simple and thus light on resources. In fact the game is pretty resource intense. Everything you see is interactable and there are update tics going on behind the scenes many times a second. I wish you luck and hope that the devs are able to find ways to make the game work better for you, but until then do what you can too.
I'm getting an FPS increase, personally. But 30 to 10 FPS?! Try playing on a real computer and not a netbook. Netbooks are for Zynga games.
I haven't played any Zynga games in a LOOONG time but, their coding is so terrible that even if you have a decent/good computer, they will still run like crap.
If this happened from the switch to 1.2.5 to 1.3, it's because of the SSP-SMP merge, so you probably have a single core processor computer. Anyone who has a multicore processor (the up-to-date majority) will receive an EXTREME BOOST in frames per second because of how the merge actually works.
Don't think Mojang should be blamed because people still use dinosaurs.
Of course, if this change occurred between the last snapshot and 1.3 Pre, that's a whole different problem.
Once it's available, sure. Also, I *think* (though don't quote me on this) that they are probably going to work on this more as time goes on. They have done some optimizations, but surely there's more that can be done.
10 fps isn't too bad to what some of the other people are complaining about -.-
That must be sarcasm, because if it got any slower you could watch it draw the graphics on the screen.
In any case. It sounds like the original poster is a victim of the merg. It has been stated that some people will see a drop in performance. Are you by chance running on an older single core? They pretty much said your life is going to be hell.
I took a hit too. On super-flat worlds, the game still plays just fine, but in normal worlds it has become unplayably slow. I expect multiplayer to be as good or better, but we'll see.
I wouldn't call this a gaming laptop, but I got it last December(It was not used, and just manufactured). I get as of 1.3 Pre: Superflat: 60 FPS Minimal Settings, 15 FPS Maximum Settings. (Raining) Normal Generated world: 80 FPS Minimal Settings, 14 FPS Maximum Settings Survival Games 2: 30 FPS Minimal Settings, 9 FPS Maximum Settings.
I have noticed a drop in FPS since 1.2.5, but I was using Optifine. It may be my computer though too, because when I selected "Good" as my quality for Slender, it was uncomfortably choppy. I also let the chunks update before I did these recordings. Hopefully I will get a new Alienware for my basement, which is proabably the ideal enviroment for computer performance. One thing I have always noticed though is that Minecraft just drained battery power on my old laptop, and does the same on my new laptop.
Turn all your graphic settings down a notch (no pun intended) and are you using the pre-release? A lot of it has seemed to be fixed, although there is the occasional lag spike.
Was getting 300-400 FPS pre patch, post patch I get 70FPS even had it fall to 15FPS for several minutes on average it's now about 45-50 FPS..... NO where near what I should be getting.
I think you need to write Mojang a "thank you" letter, at 300fps you were on your way to melting your hardware. Truestory, happened to my mate.

This isn't cool at all, Mojang.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
i havent played minecraft in like 4 years lol

AMD 6 core 3.5 ghz
12 GB Ram 1667 Mhz
2x GTX460's
3 TB HD's
bla bla bla....
1.2.5 I am running a smooth 60fps with vsync forced in my driver settings.
1.3.0 I am getting drops to around 30fps.
I am guessing they will be fixing this issue, as I see they have a snooping option to take your PC's vitals to see what is going on.
Anyways just thought I would throw my specs into the fray.
Also my settings are on MAX.
The snooping has been there for a long, long time. They're just giving you an option to turn it off now.
^ Discontinued - new series coming soon.
