Torches on roofs--or anything else cosmetic, for that matter--don't have to be an eye sore. There are ways of creating functional and attractive lighting on roofs.
No, there really aren't. Torches just don't fit every aesthetic. Some areas just look better not having lighting plastered all over them. We have few enough lighting options to start out with.

Torches, glowstone, lamps, lava, and jack-o-lanterns can all be used as decorative lighting and keep mobs from spawning. You just have to be smart about it.

If it's on the top half slabs I'm totally fine with that but we've been able to use bottom half slabs as an effective anti-mob measure for FAR too long for them to 'fix' it now. As far as I'm concerned it's a feature.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed
How many lights do you have on your roof or do you live in a cave ?
This is one of my smaller builds as its just an outpost at 40,000 blocks from spawn for food and shelter, as you can see I'm going to have to put torches everywhere, the amount of work just on these is going to take me ages. Not to mention how unsightly this going to be.
Now I'm going to have to tear down hundreds of trees for charcoal & sticks to make torches to light up over 50 of my own buildings, and then even more for others buildings who don't log in often enough to protect our major city centers from creeper damage.
Server is normal survival, with 50 regulars. Its going to cause so many issues.
I was watching a Docm77 video and he said that Dinnerbone tweeted about maybe having mobs spawn on Half Slabs. Has anyone else seen the tweet? I really hope he doesn't...haha.
He starts talking about it at 24:37. So, what do you think?
You should change the title as it is misleading. Mobs will be able to spawn on Top half-slabs. Not half-slabs in general. Big difference there.

Glowstone and lamps look basically the same, covering your buildings in pumpkins usually looks pretty stupid, and lava lighting takes up too much space. That leaves you with two real options: torches and glowstone. Besides, sometimes, you just don't want lights on your roof. Putting any kind of lights on the roof of my remote cottage makes it look goofy.

Use stairs if you don't want mobs spawning on your roof. Or use regular half slabs instead of upside down ones.
Those and lighting the roof up are your three options if they make mobs spawn on upside down slabs.

You just have to place torches evenly in spots that they would compliment; for example, I would place torches on the corner edges of each level of the cobblestone shack thing. For the barn, place torches in a mirrored pattern on the edges of each level of the roof, and just spam the center of the roof, because there's no way you'll be seeing that anyways. And for the windmill, just place torches in even intervals on the darker wood, and it could still look nice.
Just for the sake of arguement, I don't believe mining a few stacks of coal will really be that much of an issue. if you get just 4 stacks of coal, and 4 stacks of sticks, that would come out to 16 stacks of torches, which would be more than enough to light the edges and roofs of a few buildings.
Although I don't see why any of this would be an issue, seeing as to how you have the ground littered with torches as it is already.
OT: I have never used half blocks to prevent spawning, just light sources. Just place torches in a parallel pattern and it usually works on any building.
WWhy use torches? use something that doesn't show, like wooden pressure plates, redstone or string
I guess that would work. I've never used block types to prevent mob spawning, because I just feel like that's exploiting a design flaw. I've always used a generous amount of lighting.
Are people forgetting that half-slabs are an eyesore in the first place? You're only using them to prevent mobs spawning, otherwise, you would use normal blocks that actually look good.

That's an opinion. Not a fact. I personally like the look of half slabs in some buildings.

Yes,
but they are being stacked on top of each other just to deter mobs, when they look exactly like full blocks.
As far as I know, only top (upside-down) half-slabs are being affected by this change, which makes sense.

My main use of half-slabs is in the Nether, where lamps, torches, and other lighting simply doesn't make any difference at all in terms of mob spawning. While torches and lighting can make a difference and it is something I use as appropriate to light up major areas, speak with some knowledge before you start to say that lighting systems are the only thing you need to stop mob spawning.
Boo hoo hoo. Going to have to quit exploiting a fail in the spawning system.
You got mob spawning problems? Well, I feel bad for you, son. But I've built 99 mob traps and this fix won't hurt none. :3
Interesting attitude there. I can think of mob trap designs that this idea would screw up. Just because you haven't thought of it doesn't mean that having mobs spawn on half-slabs would not damage mob traps.
BTW, do you always need to be so insulting with your posts? I could say in return, being closed minded and thinking there is only one solution to any problem is equally dangerous and demonstrates profound ignorance.
Will normal bottom slabs still block spawning as they have since the beginning of time?
I can only say "I don't know". Dinnerbone's tweet seems to suggest a big "yes", but it isn't even in a snapshot yet so we won't know until it is done, or even if it will be done.
I guess I'm a weirdo...I don't mind putting torches on my buildings for lighting. I've never thought twice about it, and it looks like it's the most future-proof form of spawn-preventing there is
To those worried about mobs spawning on a roof; if the roof is flat, you can build a small overhang to contain the mobs. The only way this can be noticed is if someone is on or above the roof, so it's really not that hard to conceal.

This would be somewhat upsetting for aesthetic reasons that others have mentioned. Not every place looks good when lit up like a carnival, and allowing mobs to spawn on top half slabs would punish anyone using them for a gradual slanted roof, a modestly lit porch, an ominous grand staircase, or any other dimly lit construction would be punished for it by the moaning of the undead and the SCREE sounds of spiders all over their house (or a good morning from a lonely creeper). Aesthetics are a subjective thing, yes, but not everybody likes washing their constructions in light to keep mobs away in survival. If anything, using top or bottom half slabs as mob spawn blockers should be comparable to using torches, considering that once a block is converted to slabs it is irreversibly useless for anything but building.
