i love how jeb only changed this because of the complainers, which lets be honest the people who complained about it were dumb asses who didnt know all bs you have to go through just to get a eye of ender just to craft it (finding a nether stronghold with a blaze spawner is hard, then killing them). the people who over complain about crap being overpowered just need to stfu and gtfo, not trying to be mean to them but its true.
What the ****? First of all, if you had actually read any of the threads on ender chests, you'd see that the overwhelming majority of people thought they were fine as they were. If you think such a tiny minority of complainers has this much sway, you could reasonably argue that anything is their fault.
Secondly, you're exaggerating. The components of ender chests are only hard to get initially. Once you actually get to the Nether and find a spawner, blaze rods are easy as **** to obtain; furthermore by that point you probably have enough ender pearls to reach The End, an easy and infinite source of even more ender pearls.
Anyway, not the greatest solution, but not a bad one either.
There should be one Ender Chest inventory per player, but it would be better if, when placed, an Ender Chest would stay fixed to a certain inventory. So all chests placed by SteveA would link to EnderInventoryA, even if accessed by SteveB, meanwhile the Ender Chests SteveB places link to EnderInventoryB.
I also still feel the chests could use reduced inventory size.
Well, if someone risks carrying around a silk touch pick axe, they should be able to.
My favorite thing about this change is that it gives the end a real use even after killing the dragon.
You can farm endermen in the end and place the ender pearls in the chest. Once you die and return to the normal world you can access the ender chest there and convert the pearls into stacks of ender eyes. Then you can carry a stack of ender eyes and some obsidian to be able to use your enderchests whenever you want.
WOW.This sucks so much.
What exactly was wrong with the Ender Chest before?
We thought the "one inventory for everyone" thing was so awesome. It was the perfect way to share stuff between the players on our server.
We all "live" far away from each other, and we like to trade materials all the time. The chest would have been the perfect way to do it. But this new chest is now useless. Why would I want to share my resources with myself?
And why exactly can't you get the chest from breaking it? How was this overpowered?
Hmph, I was looking forward to using it as long-distance trading on my little family server. I can see why it was changed, but the disappointment's still there.
The change was stupid. It was fine the way it was. He should have just made a second type of chest for personal use, but instead he takes away from community builders.
For those who play Terraria, you may know how the new ender chests will work. From what I know, the new ender chest will now act like the piggy bank in Terraria, as a private storage device that can be accessed by anyone, it's just that people will only see their ender chest inventory. So you can't steal somebody's items from an ender chest, but you can always break it.
This sounds fine too. It'll invalidate the chest's ability to be used to pass things over long distances to other people. But it makes the ender chest even more useful when it's just being used for short distances (from, say, a mine to a main hub) because you can store more in it for each player on the server. So if one of you gets more valuables than can fit in the chest, you just pass it to somebody else to put in their ender chest, for the time being.
As for it breaking and losing the eye of ender, that's acceptable to me. It's a pretty awesome magical chest. It merits being a bit of effort to maintain whenever you need to move it. Unlike, say, boats.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
1. Servers like the one you play in will be affected badly with this change, yes, but most servers don't consist of friendly people who have no intention of stealing items. Thus, it makes more sense for ender chests to be used as storage which is completely anti-griefable rather than to be used to share items.
I wouldn't say it would be affected "badly" since it's not 1.3 yet but it was a feature we were all looking forward to.
But yeah, our server is super friendly and whitelisted. I still don't see why people play on griefer servers.
But like it's been said, they should have the option to be either public chests of private chests...
2. The fact that you could pick it back up was way overpowered. You could go mine in dungeons without any risk of losing your items. All you had to do was: Mine ores, immediately place the chest down, put the ores in the chest, pick the chest back up, find other ores, repeat. I think you can agree that this was not the ender chest's intended use.
Right... but... you can still do just that. Just carry a stack of ender eyes in the chest at all time and a crafting table. A hassle, but still possible. Maybe they should just stop trying to restrict a game that's unrestricted by nature in wonky ways... Oh well.
Not entirely. The player that destroys the chest cannot get the items inside. However, the player who placed the chest cannot access the items he/she put in it. It's kind of like stealing the key to a safe.

I was kinda hoping for the strategic use of ender chests as trading depots, instant messaging, etc. for multiplayer.
Made social intuition, trust, and diplomacy much more important in SMP, which I favour. Know thy neighbour, trust nobody completely, and all that.
I suppose this nerfs the balance issue of picking up ender chests (free backpacking) while mining in caverns.
I will be looking for a mod or plugin for SMP that restores the original "shared cloud" functionality though. Hopefully one that also hooks into Factions and lets faction members share an ender inv with each other and perhaps with trusted (?) allies. Would make spying and moles, double agents, etc. more of a thing.

Also: All pvp games I've played you kept your gear, it was more about strategy than starting from scratch every 5min.

Yeah, or you can take the portal out? Derp.

Yes. This would be the best solution ever.
Jeb could very easly scrap the idea all together.
Because it could essentially be used as a "backpack" in SSP.
One chest, and you could never lose your items again.
He will see his stuff.
Praise be to Spode.
