The merge will destroy everything. Just wait for 1.3.
LOLOLEOSEFLSEFJSEKJFBSBALDSWADSS TROLL The merge changes... NOTHING! All it does it allow for easier modding, easier Single Player/Multiplayer bug fixes, and over less lag on servers.
And as far as Minecraft coming to an end? It's only going to come to an end as we know it, and it's done before with the 1.8 update.
I have just been thinking, even when they stop making updates and basically stop the game, we all can still play. Its not like mmo's that totally go away when they shut down. Instead, we can still play, the updates will just stop comin.
Pessimist much? thats the minecraft horror story of the week. In fact, that kinda sounds like an "ominous" prophecy or something. a week or days?

Are you kidding? I'd PAY them to stop updating this game.
I've been playing since Beta 1.5 and had hoped that when the game was actually released that would be (short of a few bug fixes) the end of the seemingly endless updates, but to no avail.
Programmers: you can't please everyone so don't even try. You can actually update a game until you completely ruin it so make the best game you can, release it and walk away. Leave them screaming for Minecraft 2.

1. There won't be a Minecraft 2, this will be continued to be updated. How would there be a Minecraft 2 without all critics screaming at the develepors for not being "unique" in their sequel? Also, I disliked some updates for a while, but thinking about smarter villagers and what will come in the future definitely sparked my interest in Minecraft. If you're losing interest, try Technic Pack.
2. They've pleased millions of people.

I forgot, they locked you up in their basement, feed you crackers and wine and force you to play new updates. Want to trade lives?
Not really. I expect that when it stops updating officially there will be a concerted effort on the part of the modders to keep the vanilla going in some sense and actually improve parts most of the community complains about (i.e. terrain generation), but Mojang for whatever reason hasn't fixed.
Don't believe me? Let me tell you the story of a little game I used to play called Heroscape. It was a tabletop combat game where players would draft armies of warriors from different times and places (so you could have elf wizards fighting robots and secret agents - awesome, right?). It was designed for a younger audience but caught on with older players, arguably because of its modular terrain that allowed for pretty much endless variations of battlefield configurations. The game kept going strong for four years. But then, in 2010, it was bought by Wizards of the Coast, who decided it would be better off as a Dungeons and Dragons spinoff. Quite a few players (myself included) didn't necessarily agree with the move. Wizards made one or two expansions with recycled DnD miniatures then discontinued the game entirely. I stopped playing it mainly because I went away to college, and one of the downsides of the game is the amount of storage space you need for all the stuff (tiny dorm rooms... so yeah). I haven't really picked it up since then because I've been preoccupied with other things, but take a look at the front page of their main fan site: http://www.heroscape...blog.php?b=2039
Fans took up making their own expansions to keep the game going, using whatever miniatures they could scrounge up from other games. Take a look at the date, too: it was posted four days ago. That's right, fans of a niche game that was thrown out by an apathetic design company kept it going strong for two years. And that's a tabletop game, where you actually have to go out and find plastic figurines for "mods". Imagine what people can do with a computer game, when their only real limitation is how much an average computer can handle.
TL;DR: Even if Mojang stops updating it, we'll still get updates. Arguably awesome ones with stuff we've wanted for what seems like ages.
On the contrary. I was hoping development would stop at 1.0. I am absolutely fed up of changes that ruin existing content or break mods that are better than the vanilla game.
The frequency of snapshots makes waiting for mods to update A PAIN IN THE ****
If I wish to ever play with anyone else again... or play the new version of a mod... or use the decent new features like LAN...

The Minecraft 2 will come out once updating stops
