Does the merge mean you can't play offline anymore?
You can still play offline. In the final release, at least. I haven't played the snapshots. It also means that, if you want, you can invite a friend to play with you in your single player worlds.
Lol, one whole second?!? That's rough man. I can see why you're so upset...
A 1 second delay is horrendous. I mean, imagine if we all had a 1 second delay on our reflexes when driving a car. Everyone would die on the road. Do you play games online at all? A 1000ms ping is unacceptable and definitely worth complaining about.
On a side note, it's nice to see a few posts from people who know programming and know what they're talking about. Hoorah.
I think the eventual result of the merge will be great for both players and developers, but code-wise it's a huge undertaking. Apparently the code for both SSP and SMP was a huge mess in the first place so I'm not surprised they're running into issues halfway through. It will be a little revolution when it works though. People will invite redstone experts to help with circuits, make videos touring round other peoples worlds and all sorts. Big cooperative projects will be easy to do and numerous. As you can see I'm largely optimistic about it.
For the moment though I'm still playing 1.2.5 with a smattering of mods. I only tend to check the snapshots out for half an hour or so. Fly around in creative and mess around a bit before going back to my stable version to continue with my long-term legit world. Snapshots just have too much potential for bugs and incompatibility with future versions of the game, making it not really worth sinking time into a world that might break next (or infact this) snapshot. Their main functions to me are for modders to keep up with what Mojang is doing and to keep us update fiends well fed while we wait. I'm saving this 1.2.5 folder a long time I think. Minecraft 1.3 - coming May 2014
I didn't really respond to anything in particular there, but there's my wise words on the merge.
thats a really good point you have there, the reason for all these bugs is actually probably because of the fact that SSP & SMP code is a mess, i know what it's like, having a buggy game and giving the bugs cheap patches, walk off thinking that you won't have to go back there again. 3 years later popular demand shows that it wants to be merged or something, you go to do just that, and the code is a big jumble of wires that needs to be cleaned before you can work.
So from this we can deduce that the reason for all the bugs is the fact that Notch half-baked the code thinking that it won't be needed again.

Free + Crabs + Ability to trample/suffocate opponents in Cortex Command = Free Bombs.
Why is there soo much drama about this? Been playing the snapshots since the merge and I never had those "lag issues". Maybe it is time for you to update your java or even your gaming rig.
I wonder how many of the people saying the snapshot has no issues have actually played the snapshot. Play the snapshot for a good hour and a half, you'll find some bugs. Bugs that weren't there before.
But the benefits outweigh the cost if Jeb gets these nasty bugs fixed within the next two updates. I'm playing 1.2.5 until all of the major issues are gone, then updating on my primary computer. It's nice to have two computers running two different versions of Minecraft.
If the bugs aren't ironed out within the next two updates, the merge obviously didn't accomplish the task it was instated for, and it will all have been a big mistake.

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

When you're in the heat of battle trying to fight off a horde of mobs, this one whole second can SERIOUSLY throw off your timing. The SSP version has absolutely *no* delay.

2. When you break a block, it take 1 second for the block to "come out".
4. When you drop an item (as usual) it takes 1 second or the item to "drop"
Why do you all try and make it out like the game is constantly running 1 second behind?!? - It clearly isn't.
The OP mentioned this for 2 very specific instances and this wouldn't even be the case for most people. I certainly don't have this issue, but I have a computer that is up-to-date.
I love it when people have supercomputers and whine about lag, when I have a cheap $600 laptop and get no lag in the merge.
I have a cheap laptop, too,
and I am still getting these X-ray chunks and cut-off worlds EVERY SINGLE TIME.
It seems like people are too focused on "lag" to notice the real issue with these snaps.

I'm getting it too, although it usually resolves itself with time.
I don't think it's lag as much as probably some sort of quirk in the code that's not prioritizing chunk loading properly.

As I understand it, the older we get, the duller our reflexes (and perception of time) become.
Remember when you were ten and being told to stand in the corner for five whole minutes was a severe punishment.
Also the younger generation doesn't know what waiting for things you want is like to begin with. Everything is instant these days.
See, you gotta be more understanding.

Hah, you're right
A few weeks ago I noticed how fast the days were going by.
quit watchin so much porn and maybe then your computer won't lag so much haha
my game doesn't lag at all and it used to a bit in 1.2.5 and that was only cuz of how many entities were in my world and particles being turned on most of the time
Not AFAIK.
I'm pretty sure you can, I know it's intended. Whether or not it's in the current snapshot or the next update is beyond me.
