On big minecraft servers there are a lot of people, atleast half of these people ideally would be excited for Ender Chests, so how would they work? its just 1 inventory per world and some servers have over 200 people on at once. Would they work like a donation chest or what? (This is where you post what you THINK they would be used for =p) (sorry if I mispelled something)
I'm assuming it would just function as a community chest, and nothing more.
You wouldn't put anything in there that was of actual value to you personally.
BUT on smaller servers, it might function better as a trading/transport system.
A donation chest.
Put food/coal/torches/general equipment in for people who are new to the server, or people in need (out of food, stuck in the nether, etc) Just don't put your diamonds in there unless you want it to be taken away instantly.

"The awful thing about the internet is you're unable to determine whether a quote is true or not." -George Washington
the wiki says it is meant to be used as a mail box along with editable books. that is usefull only on servers with 10 or less people who all know eachother. some people might steal other peoples letters and such. anyway, a server can just get a mail plugin instead.
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
I love the ender chest and I am surprised it is so easy to make. I tend to move around a lot in my worlds, but I am also a packrat; I keep everything. So not having to push storage carts hundreds of blocks is going to be really nice.
I really don't understand the point of adding a downside that is only a downside to servers where there isn't any cooperation. There is no downside in single player, there is no downside to small community servers, the downside falls on the majority of servers out there where you cannot trust the next player as far as you can throw them, and because you can't throw players in Minecraft that's not very far at all. I understand the desire to have a downside but a universal downside would be much much better and not just punish those who want the feature but cannot take advantage of it because they happen to play on a server with more then their most trusted friends. Hell I even play on my own personal server with my trusted friends and I think this open access one inventory only enderchest is a load of crap.

Im almost positive they will come up with plugins to fix the problem of there only being 1 connection to the enderchests, like a password for different chests like LWC password option.
I don't like the fact that you MUST use plugins in order to run a server with more than a couple of players. If you don't use plugins, you have no way to store your items in a safe place, making playing on the said server pointless. Personal ender chests could have removed the NEED to use plugins, but the fact that they are shared with everyone destroys their purpose.
there are pvp servers, and in those servers, people like being able to steal things of actual value. I personally prefer servers with lockable chests, but pvpers have just as much right to a good game as we do.

False. I run a server with several people and no chest protection system. It is called a whitelist and mature players.

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
The fact that anyone can acess the chest seems like a major downside. Most servers have about 50-100 active players, and you'll probably only get to know and trust at least 15 of them. On smaller servers this is'nt really a problem because most of the players you probably actually know (irl).
The developers could have easily fixed this when they first made ender chests by storing each player's ender chest contents in the player's (.dat) server file (or something like that).

Imagine a gigantic cyborg, vaporizing people with one hand and spewing Plasma bolts with the other, and at any moment it may go crazy and target everyone as enemies.

Ermm... most servers are privately owned. There are truely only a few "big" ones.

I'm not an administrator. Please don't ask me anything related to moderation.

Yeah, but every server always has that one asshole/griefer.

I think each chest placed should be linked and stay linked to that player. That chest will always link to you're slots and everybody else can still have a private system and it's not 100% secure because anybody who can access a chest you leave placed can access your inventory but it would also allow for community based sharing as long as single admin or moderator places all the chests.

What's wrong with guaranteed protection? Even mature people can get caught into a conflict and start stealing each others' chests. There's nothing stopping them from doing that.

Dollars to donuts, there will be a plugin from player-specific Ender chests within a week of Bukkit for 1.3.
