I completely agree, everyone seems to assume it will be fixed by the next snapshot, Mojang has had years to fix these multiplayer glitches, yet people expect them to fix it in 2 weeks?
I expect them to, and here's why:
1. The bukkit team joined Mojang and within a week of them joining they fixed the ghost-entities bug.
2. With the merge, it will be much easier for them to fix all of these bugs.
3. No one at Mojang has had much interest in multiplayer, but now they have to.
I certainly don't think its going to ruin the game, nor can the ends be judged by the two snapshot the merger has been present in. I do think that things are going to get worse before they get better, so don't be surprised when issues crop up that need to be addressed. In the end I think this will turn out for the best both for Mojang and for Modders, which ulimately benefits all of us.

Nobody expects them to fix them all in two weeks:
1: They have already been working on it for more than two weeks
2: They have the bukkit team working for them (which is probably a big reason they waited to do this, they wanted some 'professionals') who are, probably, better at finding/fixing/maintaining this new system than other people working at Mojang.

I see both sides here. People coming to my awesome single player worlds? Sweet! What if Minecraft.net is offline (or down) for a little bit like it was a while ago? Will we be able to play Minecraft offline in the meantime, like we can now? Will people be able to come onto my worlds anytime they want to? Hopefully not. Will people be able to come onto my worlds anytime they want to and DESTROY EVERYTHING??? Hopefully not.

It works as a whitelist. You have to invite people.
What I'm guessing will happen is that when the 1.3 update comes out a lot of bugs will be spotted and people will be upset. Then 1.3.x updates will gradually fix these bugs and glitches and everything will be better.
In the long run the SSP/SMP merge is a great thing but when they first release it there will probably be major issues.
That's what happens with most of the updates Mojang releases anyways.

The game will be able to play with or without a constant connection to Minecraft.net. That's already possible with the snapshots.
All in all, this merger will make the game better. Now since Mojang only has to code for one game as opposed to 2 separate but similar games, the updates will be a bit more streamlined. Along with that, most of the bugs present in multiplayer are being ironed out since the merge and they are attempting to continue with that, proof being in that one bug difference list they had going a while back. Most of the problems people are worried about due to the difference in modes should be gone by the 1.3 release since they don't intend on releasing a buggy game to the public. This is part of the reason for the snapshots, to allow testing the game before it is "released" to the public. However, if you do find bugs, you can check here to see if it is already known. If not, you can leave a post there or throw a tweet Jeb_'s way. If we're all proactive about it, then there will be nothing to worry about since the guys working on Minecraft right now know their stuff and want it to work as much as you do.
The only real problem I'm having with the merge is the mobs. Either it's the lag from many farm animals or random hiccups so I can't tell if my arrow is going to actually hit the ghast. I'm sure all of that will be dealt with soon though.
I'm passively supportive of the merge simply because I have no real issues against it. Even in the rough snapshot form the merged game is not unplayable or broken and if at some point in the future the merge 'breaks' singleplayer in some crushing way I'm sure Mojang will fix it. I just don't see anything to freak out about right now. If anything I'm a little excited to see what new things will come about because of the merge.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed

If anything in the future breaks SSP it will also break SMP. In such a case, Mojang would endeavor to resolve such a problem quickly.
I think it's an awful idea because offline is the only way I, and several people I know, play. They'll be losing out on customers. Not to mention that isn't this the exact kind of DRM (having to be online to play a game) that causes a lot of gamers to actively go out of their way to avoid and or pirate a game just to cause sales losses?

The thing is, they are going to merge the code, so there's less work to be done after so. Not only will they hammer out a ton of bugs quicker, but it will feel like singeplayer again, probably even better since they can focus their energies and they have more people working for them now.

You will still be able to play the game offline, the merge only makes it easier to work on minecraft in general. You can play whenever and wherever you like, all an internet connection lets you do is local host a server on your SSP file, kinda similar to how Xbox does it.
It ruins the game now, but I'm sure they'll fix it soon. I just hope they add an option for it.
You obviously don't know how it works d you? You cannot simply have an option to run the merged game or to not run the merged game. That would be 2 enirely different pieces of code, and would not accomplish anything at all, as the merge's goal is to turn 2 seperate pieces of code into 1

SO MANY QUESTIONS AND NOT ENOUGH ANSWERS
Yes, you will be able to play offline if minecraft.net is down, or your internet is down, etc.
No people will not be able to come into your world anytime they want, you will have to invite them.
As for how they act when they are in your world, I'm assuming the answer is yes they will be able to build or destroy things- don't invite people you don't trust, and if you're worried about it make a backup copy of your world map before you let them in.
HOWEVER once plugins and mods are updated for the new version, you will be able to use server mods on your own game because mods will just be mods, instead of "client mods" and "server mods" like we have now. So you could also install an anti-griefing mod to prevent people from trashing the place.

You would have to invite them, and you yourself must be playing for them to access your world.

Only while you are online and the world is loaded. You would essentially be a non-dedicated host.
They will not be able to do so, unless you whitelist people and leave your game on and unattended. That's all your fault at that point, however.
Almost everything has been answered one way or another. People actually paying attention to such is the bigger problem.
