well me and my friends play on a snapshot server together and we wish you could like scroll out on the maps do you guys agree? it would look something like that XD
When Notch first announced them, they were supposed to be scaleable and copyable. He even posted 2 screenshots- one of the map being zoomed in and one of the map being zoomed out. They should definitely spend some more time on them because with how they are at the moment there is no reason to use them. Here's the link to the post he made http://notch.tumblr.com/post/4988431144/the-maps
In addition to what Draewa said, we need a way to place markers on maps. This could be something on the map itself, or even some kind of waypoint we physically place in the world. Just some way to mark important areas.
Also, seeing other people on the map. Like on the Xbox version. Although I'm ok with that getting pushed back.
Maps should be:
1) scaleable, because currently they are pretty much useless
2) copyable
3) nameable, because I hate "map_0" etc.
4) placeable on blocks and walls.
Maps are currently technically copyable (you need to be OP on a server or have singleplayer commands however), but you can choose which map number you give people (by default it's map 0 when spawned using commands/the creative inventory).
Hmmm, perhaps as an upgrade for maps you could put them together in the crafting bench, or possibly using a Quill to make the map have a 10x size with zooming in/out.
I think scrolling in the map itself might be a bit advanced for the design (considering, how would you scroll? Scroll wheel won't work cause it would just switch items)
What I propose is this: Put a map, paper, quill, and ink in your crafting bar (any order) and you copy the map. At that point you can choose the scale. So you have zoomed out maps and close up maps being seperate. I think the way the game is currently set would support this better than scrollable maps, while still allowing us to have different levels of zoom.

Right-click could work. Could be a problem if we want placeable maps, though.
well i think that there would just be a scroll bar at the side of a map and you would just press a button to make scroll the map out XD i don't know how to say it but all of you guys have good ideas

All of this along with making swamps actually look different like this guy said
So many outdated and un-finished stuff in this game.
When swamps was added (which is a while ago), there wasn't even anything done to the maps so you could differentiate a swamp from a regular forest. No dark ground, no nothing.

We also need to be able to choose the start point of the map, if you are trying to make several maps that lead to an area then just being able to center on your position doesn't cut it. You should place the compass in any slot and that will determine the start point be it a side or corner.

As far as "zoomable" maps go, I think you should be able to set the scale of the maps upon creation, but then it is fixed. So you wouldn't actually be able to zoom in or out of a map.
Well anyone agree?

Jeb must see this.
Thank you.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
