The only problem is that the villagers have infinite emeralds so that's like printing infinite money. I know where you were going with it, but it probably wouldn't work that way unless they modified it. :/
Yes, I understand there were two sources of emeralds (money), and the main source was trading. I'm ok with this. But removing the link to a physical ore is a bad sign.
Besided, it's a logical thing. Emeralds come from where? You should be able to mine them - you can in real life if you wish. Actually, I would love to see testificates in a mine, mining for emeralds! Abandoned mineshafts are all well and good - what about active ones? One day, perhaps...
They should keep emerald ore but I think rubies should be added back into the game, only this time they are worth 5 emeralds and they can not only be made into blocks but also into fireproof tools and armor (rubies and sapphires are fire proof while diamond is not). Also, iron pickaxes should be able to mine diamond ore but NOT diamond blocks. Diamond blocks should only be able to be mined by ruby or diamond pickaxes.
I found Emerald Ore, I was so happy! It would be a shame to remove, it's a nice thing to come across when mining just as an added sweetener.
Yeah, when I was searching for emeralds in creative I found 2 veins soon after I found out which biome to go to. I really don't see how they are rare. Saying they are rare just because they spawn in one biome is like saying finding ground is rare because the majority of space in minecraft is air blocks and empty blocks above the world. There are few things that are rare, you just have to find the right area.
Please, Jeb, reconsider. Do not take our only form of currency away, you will be denying a decent wage for all in my village and leave us in poverty. If this ill fate befalls us, we will all jump into a nearby ravine.

Jeb! PLEASE keep emerald ore!!!
Here's what you put into your signature:
Taking the ore out of the game makes it more rare than it already is.
Wow, thats great! Mind if I put that on the front page?
Go right ahead! That's what I made it for. Thanks.

A new ore is something that Minecraft has needed for a while, should not be removed.
