Don't missunderstand me. I'm not against the mainfunction of the Enderchest. It's a fantastic addition. Maybe not for large servers, but for small servers you play with your friends you trust. Making things like farm ressources & build at the same time a lot easier. And we are able to farm endstone, to use it in the normal world.
Only the backpackingfunction bothers me. At least you need only one chest for the moment. Found some iron? Put it in the Chest where it's saved. Found some Diamonds? Put it in the Chest, saved. Found Glowstone? Chest! Found Ghasttears? Chest! All the way...
Even if you die in lava and the chest is gone, all the things are saved. Yes you have to collect the ressources for another one again but the items will stay save inside.
That's why I think, you should think twice where and when you put the chest. Increasing the time you need to break the chest down would let you think so. Or if you destroy the chest you can't collect it again, like when you destroy stone with your bare hands.
Hm, I see what you're trying to say.
Maybe it could only be picked up with a diamond pickaxe? It only makes sense; obisidian can only be picked up with diamond, and this chest is 88.89% obsidian.
Plus, increasing its breaking time to be closer to obsidian.
The only problem I have with being unable to pick it up completely is... it would be a major inconvenience if you're remodeling your house, plus it would be a waste of obsidian.
Edit: Actually, this wouldn't work. There's still nothing limiting people from placing the chest. But the way I think of it is, if you spend all that time collecting obsidian and harvesting blazes and endermen, you would deserve to have that backpack. This is starting to get to opinion, though.

The slow pick time would make it fine I would think. It be a good disadvantage balance.

What about using enderpearls (only pearls, not eyes) as key to open the chest? So that the Chest uses the pearls to teleport the inventory?
I think we are still in the adventure updates with one foot. It's about exploring. So instead of running back and forth between bases, you are able to share ressources with one chest. Have a base in a dessert to farm sand. Have one in a Taigabiome to farm spruce wood. Have one in the nether to farm soulsand...and so on...
I like your ender pearl idea. Ender pearls are not too hard to get (at the end) so this wouldn't be too expensive, but it takes a lot of effort to get to the point where you can easily obtain them.
The slow pick time would make it fine I would think. It be a good disadvantage balance.
Again, there is nothing to balance in this game. Not everything good has to have a drawback. Beds have been around for quite a while now, and the only drawback to them is that they can't be used when a monster is nearby.
What about using enderpearls (only pearls, not eyes) as key to open the chest? So that the Chest uses the pearls to teleport the inventory?
For the love of God, why are you so against this? Don't use the stupid chest. I just got two of the chests completely legit, and they haven't proved all that useful to me so far. I hardly am in too dangerous a situation where accessing the chest is necessary for me, and I highly doubt that you would be either.
Do you know why it took a long time for pistons to get in? They had to contact the creator, and it took a long time confirming that it was indeed him.
Not really adding to this discussion, but if it weren't for Jens taking action while Notch was on vacation, Pistons would have never been added in the first place.
And you can't loot as much drops from monster as you could if you don't use the bed. It's hard to beat endermen when they teleport away from you...
The point is that skipping the night takes away a lot of the "challenge" and "unbalances" the game. Something that you claim the chests do, which they don't.
Quote me the point, I said I'm against the Chest...
You need obsidian to craft an enchantmenttable... no one is bitching about...
You need blazerods to craft an brewstand... no one is bitching about...
You need blazerods and netherwarts for the most potions ... no one is bitching about...
Minecraft is no Call of Duty where you can rambo through a jungle... sometimes you just have to be ... carefully.
Wow.. I'm actually not surprised the topic has went on and on like this. I will say that I like the Enderchest as it is, but I have no doubt that any reasons or elaboration on that concept will only drag me further into this argument, which I have absolutely no intention of doing. This sums up my opinions about this topic pretty accurately:
Before they have added the chest, nobody bitched about getting these ressources are to hard to gain. After adding this unbalanced feature, suddenly it's so hard to get obsidian or blazerods... why it's now harder then before when in fact nothing changed the way you get this ressources?
Even if no one brought it up beforehand, that doesn't change the argument.
The point I said I'm against this. I don't know if you mean "against the chest" or "against the idea of using enderpearls"... doesn't matter. I'm not against the chest and the Idea is my Idea I suggested to nerf the chest...
...Which doesn't need nerfing because there are no balance issues in a single player experience where you can change into creative mode whenever you want anyway.
2. If you choice to play with cheats, then you don't need to search for the ressources. YOU CAN CHEAT all the things you need without leaving your shelter at all!
Okay, since you clearly didn't get my point, let me explain it slowly to you.
-You say that the chest is completely overpowered.
-I ask you why you say the chest is overpowered.
-You tell me that it makes the game too easy.
-I tell you that easiness is relative and there are no balance issues when you have cheats.
Now, what my argument tells you is that the "game-breaking" chest doesn't really break the game compared to being able to put in cheats. What you are doing is going back on your own argument. You constantly clamor for the chest to be fixed and have some sort of downside, but you say nothing of the actual cheats which will literally remove all challenge from the game. What you want is for there to be balance, and I say that giving the player cheats in a single player game refutes any kind of balance.
It's not my problem if you can't play without cheats... My "allow cheats" button is for standards toggled off. If i want to be creative, I go play a creative world. If I want to play survival, I go play a survival world. Cheats are for people creating adventure maps or ... well... for cheater.
And so you admit yourself that any feature that you do not like you do not have to use instead of forcing the change on the rest of us.
I just thought of something that would be a solution to both the multiplayer and the OP problem: When you craft and enderchest, it makes two. Those chests are forever bonded, only those two will share an inventory. Makes transport easier, it is like extra inventory space, and when both are destroyed, their inventory is lost forever. Simple.
That actually makes it more in line with the mod version which is infinitely more powerful.
Ya'll don't think about stuff before hitting post?

Ever try to store all the items you want with one chest? I like the Ender Chest because it's the closest thing to both a teleporter and a safe. If anything, it's a reward for having to put up with all the obstacles, including Creepers destroying your stuff, and the drawback is you get the space of a single chest.
And again this "don't like it, don't use it"... if you want to take the easy way play on peaceful or use your cheats or go play creative, switch modes an tell all your friends you've done this without using cheats.
You are seriously missing the point, which means I will explain this slowly for you again.
Whenever I bring up something like Creative Mode or the cheats, I am using a tactic to refute your point. Now, your argument is that the chest is unbalanced and needs to be changed because, like you say, it apparently makes the game unbalanced. Now, I've been taking this time to point out that there is no balance in Minecraft in the first place because of Creative Mode and cheats. Whether I use them or not is not the point of the argument.
You are not the "rest of us"... the "rest of us" may have other opinions then you. And so I have.
But funny to see how you and some other acting like there's someone made a petition, forcing mojang to change the chest.. Fearing changes this much?
The funny part about this is you claiming that I'm the one that fears change when you want the chest changed because it messes with the status quo, or so you say.
Nope, the funny part is, it seems that I can still enjoy playing minecraft even if the chest won't change, while you can't enjoy playing minecraft, if the chest would change, because suddenly all the ressources are so much harder to farm...
Look, I know that you're butthurt because you got proven wrong disastrously. I know how that feels. I'm just going to let you know right now that trying to goad me into an argument about my e-peen size isn't going to work. You know it and I know it.
Alright, i think we all can agree here that this thread has gotten way out of hand. Nearly all constructive arguments have died out and the last few pages have been little more then personal attacks. This thread is going nowhere.
Alright, this is what productive information I've managed to collect from this thread:
1. When it comes to transportation, ender chests are balanced with minecart systems (maybe even less desirable).
2. However, when you find something valuable, you can just place an enderchest and put it in, and not have to worry about falling in lava.
3. The above problem could be fixed by requiring an ender pearl to put items in. Ender pearls are not expensive once you defeat the dragon, but it takes a lot of effort to get to that point. Plus, ender pearls can only stack up to 16.
Hm, I see what you're trying to say.

I'm starting to think that Mojang just loves to put "Ender" in front of things.
I like your ender pearl idea. Ender pearls are not too hard to get (at the end) so this wouldn't be too expensive, but it takes a lot of effort to get to the point where you can easily obtain them.

They left the bouncing feature out, but otherwise yes.
I have literally no idea what your point is.
Creative Mode, still didn't ruin the game.
I can see where you're going with this, and this is different. The launching was altogether pointless.
Even if no one brought it up beforehand, that doesn't change the argument.
The point to what?
-Cheats
That doesn't even begin to make sense.
...Which doesn't need nerfing because there are no balance issues in a single player experience where you can change into creative mode whenever you want anyway.

I rest my case.

Don't forget the hunger system.
There's the picking over minor points. I'm not really 98 years old.
I like this feature and I want to use it, but I don't like to have it in such a unbalanced state. And I'm not the only one who see the unbalance.
You are seriously missing the point, which means I will explain this slowly for you again.

The texture isn't a nerf, and I'm pretty sure the original recipe wasn't that difficult to use either. What's your point?
