There will always be arguments between those who understand what a game is and those who do not. I know that a game becomes fun by creating challenges that the player figures out how to overcome in the easiest way. Others will just say "Games are supposed to be fun" over and over to justify adding "fun" things that actually remove challenges.
Games are what the player makes of them. Minecraft is a game specifically designed to give people endless choices of what they can do in their world. Stop trying to dictate what other people should and shouldn't do in their games. Challanges in minecraft are all open-ended. As in, you create your own challanges. That's the point of a sandbox game. This doesn't remove or add any pre-set challanges in the game, despite how overpowered it is. Because you create your own challanges. If you want your game to be hard, you don't have to use the chest.
Why is this concept so hard to understand? Do you lack the willpower?
Let's say Mojang suddenly adds a backpack which adds another 3 rows to your inventory. The backpack requires materials that you can't get in the first hour of gameplay but which are easy to get after that. Also, if you die you get to keep the entire backpack inventory. New items are automatically put into the "safe" backpack region of your inventory until it is full. This means that death carries little significance anymore, as even if your items disappear you only lose the backpack, items in your hotbar, and the less valuable half of your inventory if it happens to be overloaded.
This backpack is basically what the enderchest is. The only difference is that it is more convenient. The funny thing is, a lot of the pro-chest people are saying that convenience is good, but pretty much all of them claim that the chest as implemented is perfect. If convenience is so awesome, why wouldn't you want it to be implemented as this backpack instead?
The reason is simple: the backpack is obviously overpowered. With the chest, you get to claim ignorance to the fact that it works like a backpack and insult people for supposedly wanting to make it harder to link your bases. This is evidenced by several pages of people asking "How is it overpowered", giving new readers the impression that there is no opposing argument.

Using the term overpowered implies that there's a balance to be messed up to begin with. In a single player game balance isn't an issue. Balance is only an issue when what I do effects you. If I were to attack you with that 1000 damage sword that other guy mentioned a million times then you'd have no way of defending yourself and that would be an upset to balance. But even then you would also have to consider factors like different armor tiers a balance upset to the balance as well. In single player there is no balance to upset. Nothing can be overpowered.
In multiplayer the only time balance becomes an issue is in PvP. But once again armor is a balance upset as well. So why isn't anyone complaining about that?
Everyone has access to the same resources and you have to work for them. There's nothing wrong with a reward to make future endeavors go by a little quicker or adding a way to give a little more inventory room for a little more convenience. Every other game with inventory management I've played has had a storage you can access from anywhere along with inventory upgrades later on. But it doesn't take away from the challenge at all.

What I bolded explains why pvp is balanced no matter what is added. In singleplayer it is essentially a 'console game' and balance is everything to keep the player challenged yet interested, so it's quite the opposite.
I don't really think it's overpowered, I just think it needs some tweaks, particularly for multiplayer. I think that having a GUI with some way to put in codes that link to a certain inventory would be excellent, as we could allow specific people access to specific inventories.
I do agree with Locklear that MC is becoming too easy. There need to be some things that are more challenging.
Also, despite what you think otherwise, "grinding" counts as a legitimate way to add difficulty in a thing like minecraft. Take obsidian for example: Takes a long time to mine, can be dangerous to get, but it's incredibly powerful if you get enough of it. Obsidian is a pretty balanced block.
I feel that iron is too easy to get. However, instead of changing the current ore gen, I would love to see an alternate ore gen option that makes ore veins much, much rarer, but also incredibly large with thousands of ore blocks in every vein. It would go great with the large biomes world type in large servers.
Just some thoughts on the debate of things being too easy/hard.
Idk, if you ask me, Ender chest kinda seems like a incomplete feature. But anyway, from what I've seen in youtube videos of the snapshot, Im really liking Ender Chest, though whenever verson 1.3 comes out, I probably wont make use of it right off the bat, I have been playing my world for more than a month and I have yet to make a diamond pickaxe, therefor I havent been to the nether either. So it is currently impossible for me to craft the chest.

That's actually exactly my thoughts on the subject- Jeb doesn't need to and shouldn't remove everything that makes the game easier. Instead, he needs to add more options (making ore veins rarer... disabling certain items...) and add more optional dungeons and challanges. That way, people can still play the game in a challanging way, and other people can play it in a more relaxed way.
I, for one, am looking forward to the Ender Chest, and I wait to see how Risugami sees it as well.
I happen to already use a "Death Chest" md, when I die, everything is inserted into a chest, meaning scatered loot is not an issue.
I can see the Ender Chest as a great challenge to get, and it adds more things to track down and kill to collect rare Mob Drops.
Diamonds are the only issue I have, as I tend to work heavily on first making a treehouse, or a desert sandstone temple thing.
I can see how the chest *COULD* be "Game-breaking", but it's not like one is getting the chest at the very moment you spawn in your new world and opening your inventory.
It requires a long setup to aquire, starting with locating diamons, and several pockets of lava. on top of that, one has to collect not only enough Obsidian for a portal, but a large bit more. Then, one has to travers the very dangerous nether and locate a Nether Fortress, then one would ahve to exlpore this fortress, with whatever nasties are there, until one locates and manages to slay a Blaze. one also has to manage to kill an Enderman, not an *IMPOSSIBLE* feat, but a rather difficult one, even for someone that can locate 3 or 4different ones a night, as the drop rate for the Ender Pearl is rather low. Once one isable to aquire all of that, keep in mind that an Eye of ender has 2 OTHER uses, both of which are actual "Game finishers".
The ender chest acts as sort of a backpack, but one can also link a series of homes together, or, on SMP, as a trash bin, as suggested above. I think that getting the Chest off the ground should take about twice as a wooden chest, and only with a Diamond sword or axe, not a pickaxe.
I do see uses for this as "Game breaking", but I see a lot MORE uses as a very reliable, and portable, "Extra inventory"

I admit, first off, that I kinda TL;DR ed the last few pages of this, But I did skim enough to know that the same points were being brought up ad nausium. Look Ender chest is an ITEM. The CHALLENGE is to figure out how it best works for you. I'd support being only able to pick it up with a diamond pick, but I still think that's a bit silly. If you ask me I'd like to be able to pair Ender Chests, or have a PRIME ender chest and lots of little sub-ender chests that connect to it. That would make Factioned PVP multi player maps a hell of alot more interesting as it adds another level to the tech tree, i.e. "who's gonna get their troops enderchests first?" AND NOT EVERYTHING HAS TO BE THE SAME IN SINGLE AND MULIT PLAYER. They are by THEIR VERY DEFFINITION different styles of gameplay. Should we remove server commands so that admin and ops have to mine and toil like the rest of the players to build awesome worlds to visit? I know of a few thousand server Admin that would care to disagree with that statement. Instead of bitching about it, why not try to figure out how to best fit the new item into your existing world? So you have a huge transportation system and Ender chests make it obsolete? Guess what? I had just oufinished a HUGE road network, when powered rails came out. So I built a rail way. A 2 km long railway, that never changes elevation. the roads took me about 4 weeks to build and they go all over. They were easy. The railway took 8 weeks to build, and it goes in a straight line. THAT WAS EFFING HARD. All so I could save some time from pressing the "w" key. My point is that I worked hard, and got a tangeble reward for my efforts. BECAUSE THEN I'D HAVE TO BUILD ANOTHER ONE, AND IT'D BE A PAIN IN THE ASS! If you ask me, if it's usefullness is equal to it's difficulty to obtain, then it's not overpowered. In other words, SURE the BFG in DOOM will kill pretty much any non-boss in 1 or 2 hits, but then THERE ARE ONLY 2 or 3 CHANCES TO FIND ONE in the whole game. Shotguns on the other hand are plentiful as hell, but then they only bring you up to par with most enemies. Levels my friend, levels.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY CRAFTED 2 ENDER CHESTS (tm)! Enjoy them and remember, if you loose one, making another is JUST SO EASY, YOU'LL CRY TEARS OF JOY!
IF if can...then I'm horrified as such a game breaking feature. Why? Because typically a person must think...
"Ok, I'm going to travel in search of some new lands to make a base, so I better bring some supplies."
You must choose and balance what items you bring. But if the chest can be placed and picked back up like there is no tomorrow, all of this challenge and thought, is broken. Players don't have to worry about supplies if they can just plop down a ender chest and BAM, supplies.
I've got bad news for you. Since one of the recent snapshots, you can enable commands in single-player. Just pop up the chat box, switch to creative mode and BAM! Supplies.
