The new one doesn't look like gravel at all. I agree with what others have said as well, removing textures isn't in the spirit of a sandbox game. You could ruin someone's creation. Yes, you could use texture packs, but if the creation is on a multiplayer server...

This is absurd. No textures were removed. AND we were promised ages ago that textures would be updated.
Well you know how it is, I've been playing only since 1.8 but I can see how stuff runs around here.
Obviously this new change of gravel is just a way to try to hit that "perfect" median between keeping the old players something new to chew on but yet giving the new ones something to look at before they say something stupid like "Minecrafts gay, WoW for life" or something of the sort. You see in my opinon I believe Jeb is a little flustered and maybe a little hurt that Notch has left to work on that new space game of his (Which btw Notch keep up the work on it, but please dont make it another game that no one knows about because its replaced by something better). As for the question goes, yes I do like this gravel texture better but you know, its still kinda sad to see it go.
Because isn't the annying stuff the things you really remember in a game anyway? Not once have I heard someone comment "OMFG we have enchating" (which will help us greatly) but "Really man, another Effiency 4? So indeed while Minecraft may change, people just need to remember the "good old days" and the amazing times of that first moment you found that diamond, or your first dirt house, or even the time that skeleton "came outta nowhere" and hit you right into that lava! Keep these things in mind and you just might say, Hey lets go play some Minecraft.
of Minecrafters who actually like gravel texture. It was easily identifiable, grainy, and looked great on roads The new gravel looks like roof shingles I saw on a texture pack or mod I saw onetime.
I personally dislike it.
Ofcourse, I'm used to it after 3 years.
But seriously, I love the old pink-tinge with specks look. It looked alot more like normal gravel.
It did look a bit more like gravel, yeah.
Though I still like the new texture, it just doesnt look a whole lot like "gravel" to me. Coulda just made some totally new block with that texture instead (and new blocks are always nice)
After using the latest snapshot, I have to say that I overtly preferred the previous gravel texture. The new texture feels too similar to both cobble and stone, which ends up being fairly annoying in caves whenever I see it. I think making it a bit darker would help a lot.
I wasn't keen on the old gravel texture, but I have to say I really dislike the new one. It looks far too close to cobblestone for my liking, gravel paths don't stand out from cobble structures very well.
I guess gravel colour varies, but the gravel colour I've always seen irl is more orangey/yellowy.
You are correct, and it does vary because most common "pea gravel" (which is what most people think about when they think "gravel") is weathered quartz. In my neck of the world, most gravel is either white or grey. :/

I never really like the old texture, and in general this new one's a lot less ugly* and would be an improvement in my view, except that it really doesn't stand out much from anything else. And doesn't look much like gravel. The old texture looked lousy, but you knew what your were looking at. So I prefer the old one. It looks distinctly different from anything else, Has a more separate-bits look, and clearly isn't stone.
*But I still don't like it.

Twitch or nothing? It was nice. Isn't anything going forward.
Lol, the old gravel looks more realistic. Where I come from gravel has pink tinge in it, it's not solid grey with some black blocky things poking out of it. This one looks more like steel. I used to use connected roads with gravel in my alpha world, and I would use the flint I got for flint and steel and watch forests burn to ashes :-) Now the world will look ugly. It did change in (i think) 1.0 or 1.8 and got lighter on the eyes, but a new reboot of the texture like this? Wow, Jeb, you really are wrecking minecraft.
Would you like to go make Minecraft perfect to the point of everyone liking everything?
That would explain the wide range of opinions on this topic. For my area typical gravel is I believe crushed basalt. Looks like this(closeup): http://www.whiz-q.co...0001/basalt.jpg
Yeah, that's what gravel looks like in my area as well. I prefer the new texture. As I said in a different thread about gravel texture preferences, the old texture looked too much like a random mesh of pixels and had the tendency to screw up my Hall of Fame.
Exactly what do you think gravel is?

Excuse me, where did you get your avatar? I've seen that pattern before and someone commented "it looks like a wheel of penises" and I lol'd

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
