So I just noticed something that could be bad about villager trading. Take a look at the picture below. It costs 4 red things (lets just call them ruby's for now) to but one leather tunic. I imagine the ruby ores will be about as rare as gold or diamond. I think it would be cheaper just to kill a few cows and get the leather your self. I'm worried the villagers will be selling cheap things.
I think that new ore is just a retexture of redstone, which will be renamed into ruby ore. Mining ruby ore would give you 1 ruby, which can be crafted into 4 ruby dust. Four ruby dust could be recrafted into one ruby.
I hope if they do add a new ore it will at least be in a place unconventional compared to the others. Maybe at high altitude(probably not because there's not geological reason to support that) or maybe a layer that stops before you get to diamond so that you have to mine different layers.
I really hope they aren't, that would be tacky. Like others said, I hope we get ruby, emerald, sapphire, blue version and other things added to the game, it would be very nifty.
Blue version? What do you mean by that? Or did you accidentally start naming off Pokemon games?
Yeah, I don't quite understand what the difference is between sapphire and some vague "blue version" :P. Either way, I'd love to have decorative objects like emeralds.

"Victory is like a watermelon. It's hard to spell and it tastes good."
Being currency, I'm hoping it'll only be generated through NPC trades. If it is a minable resource, it would introduce 1 of 2 problems.... too common and we'll have yet another item thats too easy to surplus. Too rare and it could really skew the trade values of the NPCs.

You forgot
Firered, Leafgreen, Heartgold, SoulSilver, Platinum, Pearl, Red, And Chrystal Version!
In all seriousness, I'd love to see some new ores added, But maybe Jeb should make it so when a new biome or ore is added you have to convert your old world, That way Worlds Generated Pre-1.3 make Ruby Ore, unlike when they added Lapis and Redstone.
I don't think it will be a new ore, if it is, we would have to generate new chunks, also I am kinda hoping its not redstone to because it has to many uses, I am hoping you will get it from quests, trading, and maybe slaying mobs, either way I think this is a success. Oh, and I think you ment by "blue version" you ment saphire?
Why do you all want Rubys to be crafted from Redstone? Redstone has enough uses already.
This entirely.
I would much rather see the money be independent from the other ores entirely, or at the very least have ways of being obtained on its own accord. Trading is a funny system, in that you get money when you sell things as well as spend it when you buy them. So for all the people here worrying about spawning new chunks...yeah, you'll probably have to spawn new chunks if youreally want a significant amount of rubies, but you'll probably still be able to obtain some money without having to do anything but sell some of the junk you've already got sitting around.

People primarily guessed that because they didn't see the ore in the background, and assumed that all the redstone dust had a connection to the new item. People also want it a little because, I assume, new things seem to fit better (at least initially) the more they tie into the existing framework. A new ore whose only function is to be currency in a trading system is completely new and strange.
Though personally, I would rather a different currency solely because I like when Minecraft is quirky. Rubies as currency isn't all that strange. Alternatively, I think I'd like a barter system where the villagers essentially have the same values as the players -- that is, the more useful building tools and blocks are more valuable than things like gold. But ehn, I'll accept the idea of rubies for now. Maybe it'll lead to some whole new angle to Minecraft based around rubies.

Make note: I generally avoid being insulting. If I sound insulting, I'm probably joking.
BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
EDIT: nvm this post, look in the top right corner of the picture, you will see a new ore
