If the glitches I keep hearing about are only because of lag then it's all good. I had hoped they would add some cool things to SP that they couldn't in MP because of balance issues and griefing. I guess we will never get cool projectile weapons.
I'm sorry, but your arguments make no sense. How does this limit mods and how are you going to get griefers in your SSP world?
Mod developers are going to need to start over from scratch in many cases and re-write their mods as a clean sheet re-implementation of that mod. For some mod developers, that may be simply too much for what is just a hobby and decide not to update their mods to the new version of Minecraft. For others, they were just doing a copy-paste of some mod development tutorial anyway, so it is going to be some time before their mod is ready with the new system.
In that sense, it will limit mods... at least for awhile. The transition to a combined SSP & SMP is going to be rough, and the API hooks are only going to make that much more complicated still. Once that big ouch happens, I think the process of accessing and using mods is going to be much, much easier to do though... particularly for ordinary players.
My hope is that eventually a "mod store" can even be developed where some mod developers can earn some pizza money (I have no delusion of becoming a multi-millionaire off of a mod) for their effort and it might even become an additional revenue stream for Mojang as well.
It also means that I wont have to worry if this or that command is available. For example, it's gonna be great having creeperheal in SP, the commandbook warps, etc. Every mod will only have to be coded once from now on.
The mod API isn't a silver bullet to fix everything. I think mod developers are still going to need to tweak their mods on major release versions, where the thing all of the mod developers are going to be complaining about is changes in the API. They won't need to worry about bug fix updates though, or even if some minor bit of content is added like having jungle trees drop cocoa beans when that wasn't done before. That might still make your cocoa bean tree mod obsolete, and there will be some other issues to worry about from one update to the next, so there will still be version issues with mod developers even with a properly functioning API. At best all you can say is that mod developers aren't going to stress over the player-made API libraries updating with minor tweaks to the game.

I wasn't referring to the ModAPI, but to how there will be no difference between having mods on a MP server and in singleplayer. I'm used to having creeperheal (repairs damage done by creepers) on our server, and I really miss it on SP sometimes. I have however been unable to find a similar mod for SP. It goes the other way round too, but I can't really think of an example atm.
I guess the ModAPI will be kinda like modding for craftbukkit. Mods still break in updates, but not as much and you don't have to bother deobfuscating code etc.
If I see further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
Hey Jon, what about Giant Mobs, like the old giant, and the spider-for-screenshot Jeb made? They could be rare, like spider jockeys. Let's see the Golems fend off those =]
The discovery of no pause has really, really annoyed me. I am absolutely NOT going to update beyond 1.2.5 if I have to completely log out of Minecraft just to go and get a drink!
that would be one of the things to bug me too. im pretty sure the pause button will work as long as youre the only person there.
I actually like the idea. You probably will too when 1.3 is out. This snapshot isnt the official relase >.>
And its not SSP turning into SMP and SSP will have all SMPs bugs, but rather its SMP turning into SSP. All SMP bugs will be eliminated.
And stop comaplaining about your mods disappearing. Why would they make a mod api if you cant use a lot of mods anymore? >.>

this. exactly this. its better to think optimistically, especially since its in such and early stage of development. not like anyone can predict the future, and doomsaying does nothing to help.
YES. When playing Pocket Edition or XBLA Edition (coming in four days, btw) you can just start playing and anyone can jump in, anytime, and I like this. No more port-forwarding or technical stuff, no copying levels to a special folder just so you can play wih your buddy, and this is all good. BUT! The problem is, HOW will mods adjust to this? Hmm? Also, there needs to be a way to separate drop-in playing and leave-me-alone playing, like "server invisible" or something like that.

Keep a backup of the game I suppose, and good luck with that one.
Besides having Jeb put in a really weird kludge into the game, how would you propose that the "local server" clock be suspended? I'm just trying to think of a logical way to make that work that could be explained in a succinct fashion to the Minecraft developers on how this could be put into the game, so you could also temporarily "pause" server worlds as well? Keep in mind that this is going to need to be a feature added on full multiplayer servers as well because the two code bases are being combined. That is the whole point of this exercise.
Something like that sort of happens anyway on server worlds where it changes from night to day when everybody goes to sleep at the same time. I suppose a similar kind of "pause request" feature could be added every player could request that the game pauses and if everybody wants the game paused (which would be the case if you are the only player in the game), the game would be temporarily suspended.
Make sure you add this complaint to the official bug list for this snapshot.

this will help mods actually with the mod API coming along with the update, so every mod will be compatible with SMP automatically ( after the mod makers are done re coding their mod XD )
I agree with it as long as I have an option to play without anyone joining.
Not only will that be an option, but that is already in place. All single-player worlds are white listed by default, so nobody is going to just join your game.
I only now saw what mojang is up to, since I haven't been following it too closely. If anything, that is exactly the right way to go. This will make it easier to maintain the game, and it will pretty much allow mods to both run in single- and multiplayer alike, automatically.
I agree with Psistorm!
Also, don't forget that the current client is single-threaded. For people with multi-core CPUs (which is everyone); once a lot of the work is offloaded onto the server (running on a separate CPU) the game could be twice as fast.

...im going to feel bad now because i DONT have a multi-core CPU...
No, hell no. SMP has the most stupid game play ever. You can't hit monsters, can't keep animals, can't hit ghast fire balls, can't fish, can't boat, can't ride a rail, and can't use a bow without missing 5 times in a row.

Sounds like you haven't play SMP in a long time or always try it on crappy servers >.>
I am not saying no to the update, please re-read my previous post... I said I knew they would fix some of the issues, but as it is, I can not play with the current snapshot... it makes single player a horrible experience.
Then stop whining, stop playing it, and submit feedback. Jesus. You're just as bad as the people complaining that this snapshot is going live.
I think that best will be to have a button somewhere (most probably in Options menu) wich will turn the conected SSP and SMP on/off. That way you could play single player without SMP bugs and by click of one button in menu you could make it easyer to your friends to join you.
P.S.: I´m sorry if someone has posted same idea. I am just too lazy to read all the posts .
Play without SMP bugs by throwing a switch? Sorry, **** doesn't work like that.
I don't have that many issues with this thought as long as they handle it correctly. I shouldn't have lag just playing on my own server. I shouldn't have to deal with running the client and the server at the same time, and I should have the ability to play offline and not have to deal with connection issues with SSP.
I hope it is what I assume and they are making both SMP and SSP basically the same platform and use the same methods. I mean I have no idea why one would want to separate each in such a way. If we have them together they could easily include an in game GUI for creating a server and setting multiplayer settings. BTW these are all things that polished games have at launch usually. I know Minecraft is special, but really these are things that should have been indevelopment since SMP came out, and i'm referring to SMP Classic.

i am well aware of this.
*cant play minecraft at all anymore due to fatal crash in graphics card*
Praise be to Spode.
