This week we’ve started working on separating the server logic from the client. The purpose of this is both to make it easier for us to add features (since we don’t have to implement stuff “twice”), and also to make it possible for you to invite people to play on your local computer without setting up a server. In other words, more like how it works on Minecraft: Pocket Edition.
I can not wait for this to be implemented and working. What do you all think?

It will be great for doing adventure maps with friends, but I don't plan on leaving my pc on 24/7, so we'll still need a server for casual play.

If I see further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
Hey Jon, what about Giant Mobs, like the old giant, and the spider-for-screenshot Jeb made? They could be rare, like spider jockeys. Let's see the Golems fend off those =]
This sounds great for casual pc gamers who enjoy MC, but I don't see this fully replacing servers. Some people will want dedicated, external servers and such.
Some people will always prefer to have options at their control, even if they never touch them. For that reason, I can't see private servers ever going out of existence as long as Mojang allows them to happen.
I say we do it like Animal Crossing style I mean it would be easy and it would be whitelist-able and you could disable it. and for plugins they would become mods like the big ones Mcmmo Towny Factions and all that stuff and when someone joined your world like in tf2 everything would download so it would be playable on there.
Eh, this really doesn't replicate the functionality that a real server gives you. This just prevents you from having to set up a server just to have a friend visit your world.
If you want a shared world where any of your friends can log in and play at any time, you still need a server. You also still need a server if you want to be able to play from multiple computers without constantly swapping files around.

It also depends on the quality of SSP servers, but I still support this plan. I like the idea of being able to add a friend or two just for a short amount of time, either just to show off/explore or to actually play together
It will certainly change how discussions like "looking for 2-3 people to play with." instead of joining someone's server, you can join someone's, server, wait why is this different? Just because you can share your single player world? I am missing something with this concept
i wonder if that will make more mods become SMP compatible
All mods will be both SMP and SSP compatible with no changes once this goes live and the mods are updated to work with the new setup / API. That's one of the BIG bonuses about this change.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
This won't replace real 24/7 servers. Servers like that are simply the best thing for what they do. But it adds a sort of "plug and play" functionality to Minecraft. At a con and meet some new friends? You guys can whip out your laptops and play some MC for a few hours while you're there. On a long plane ride? Play some MC with a bunch of people. The possibilities are endless for more casual/social location based playing.
IMHO, this is great for "friends playing together".
But for those who enjoy open servers... it does nothing. This is why:
Open servers face 2 big problems: hackers and griefers. Vanilla minecraft has no provisions to handle hackers and griefers, so the only choice is to use real servers, with good plugins to catch and stop those vandals.
People who play on open servers typically look for features like /home, warps, the ability to TP to a friend, towns, multi-world portals, mcmmo, etc. Those features are only available as plugins, so again... real servers.
As Minecraft matures into a solid game these things may become available in core minecraft, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
im looking forward to this A LOT. i never cared much for SMP servers, mostly because im more simplistic with multiplayer. the funnest thing i want to do is much like what mindcrack is doing with the ultra-hardcore: pvp survival.
i can easily do that with what's coming up now. so, so easily.
even if i do have to get a better computer first...

For me, this is great news! Me and my friends have been waiting to play some custom maps together! I did have a hamachi server, but some of my friends' virus scanners say that hamachi is a virus, therefore, I am not able to play with them, and yes, I do have some things I would love to show them in my creative single player world. I can't wait for this as well!

If I understand correctly the bukkit people are working on the multi player aspect of this game. So your right as of right now, but eventually I think the API and bukkit plugins will be one and the same. Thuss your going to be able to do all that teleporting, MCMMO and multi-world stuff.

I could quite litteraly add your maps to my server and have them running in under 30 minutes. I don't have a multi world plug in on my server at the moment or the time it would take me to add your worlds would be slightly longer than the time it would take you to send me the files. The bukkit server kicks ass. You can have dozens of worlds running side by side with portals between the two and have your server not hicckup. You don't need freeken Hamachi to host a bukkit server, you just need to punch a hole in your firewall and port forward the address to the machine running the server (note: if you know what I just said good for you, go play! If you don't. Do not touch the router in your house!)
The only thing I have to add to this is that for small numbers of people (say under 5), haveing a single player/multi player set up in the client should be fine. Once you get a lot of people logging in and out and all that your still going to need a dedicated computer for the tast. Simply put; to run the client takes up CPU cycles (and quite a bit of them because your running 3D graphics and loading textures), and every other person logging on will suck up CPU as well (getting chunk and location info from the host). You'll get to a point where you simply can't do both. Servers and their programs are built for doing exactly that...being a server, and moveing info in and out. A good high end gameing rig can be a server....But it's not built for that in mind. It's built to move pixels. So on a large scale it's just not going to work. You'll still need a dedicated platform.
This 'forced server' concept is total ****, even in early development.
FPS dropped from ~400 in SP to ~100, and it's solely because of this.
Remember good performance in SP? Say goodbye to that, ladies and gentlemen.
Also, don't tell me it's because this is in early development.
There is literally nothing at all they can do to stop this terrible everlag, unless Mojang chooses to rewrite the entire server from scratch with better performance in mind.

That's entirely dependent on what you're trying to do.

That might solve the dedicated sever problem. As you'd basically be getting the same thing you have now, but everything would run out of one .jar
That sounds exactly like what we already have, so I don't see the point.
