So I was very excited about all the new changes for snapshot for 12w17a. Downloaded it and have been playing it load of nice changes. But then I left to work on this library I have been building and thought about make turning a chest of reeds I had into books for space... but now i need 1 leather for 1 book...
Ok no big deal leather isn't that hard to get. I have a cow farm that holds about 50-60 cows before I "harvest" them. So I turn my machine on and wait at the end to get my cooked beef and leather... I get 31 leather from 53 cows. I go to make books and bookshelves with it and i only get 10 bookshelves from it all. A double chest full of paper now and I can't make more books until my cows replenish.
Just a heads up on the math for those going to build an enchanting room after this patch goes live; You will need 90 leather to make the 30 bookshelves for your new enchanting room (that's about 150 cows give or take) along with the 270 reeds you will need to collect and 180 wooden planks.
So now I humbly ask you Jeb don't let this new book recipe go live. Think of the cows...
Of cmon, leather is useless. Good to have some form of use for it and getting it isn't that hard, I had always plenty of it, even before of animal breeding feature. IMO it's fine and I find it a good change.
Leather is useless atm and I agree I thought leather wasn't that hard to get. But then I played the new snapshot and tried to build a library building and found out how really hard it is. It really needs to different than what the snapshot has.

I knew this would happen because I already knew of the absurdly low drop rates of Leather.
IMO, Leather should be used in Books, but Leather needs to have a higher drop rate and/or there needs to be alternative ways of obtaining Leather.
Like cooking useless Rotten Flesh (that just accumulates!) into Leather.
The thing I'm afraid of is players murdering all of the cows. People see animals on SMP and think "KILL" not "Oh, maybe I should farm these animals." The server I play on barely has any cows or pigs, I wish animals would spawn like they used to...
I generally support new uses for things that tend to be underused, and leather was a good example of that. Unfortunately, I also prefer not to kill animals. Here's hoping there's an alternate way to get leather in the future, like the cooked zombie flesh idea above.
I support the recipe change.
Enchantment rooms are meant to be a near end-game luxury and as such needed something that actually challenged the player to craft them.
Adding to leather to the crafting recipe for books gives that extra challenge and provides great incentive to create a cow farm.
I don't see the problem with needing x leather or y paper. It gives you something to work for. Why do you need the library built and finished in 10 minutes?
If you're in a hurry, install Single Player Commands and use "give leather 1000".

I'd also like other ways to get feathers and ink.
Why do you not kill animals...? It's just a cow made of rectangles.. GET. OVER. IT.
Really? It's not like it's even that bad of a recipe, It's ONE leather per book, Stop worrying and breed some cows, That's what breeding is for, getting more of an animal so you can harvest them.
Because it's not a "challenge", it's a time sink. Creating a cow farm is fun, harvesting it over... and over... and over is a chore.
Why build it if you don't like using it? Of course sitting at a harvester is boring but so is instantly having everything you want. If you need instant gratification, use creative mode or Single Player Commands.
The challenge is grabbing a sword and some torches and wandering into the wilderness looking for cows, hoping you don't get ambushed at nightfall.

I use rotten flesh all the time. But I agree, this is the most logical leather recipe.

Nice idea but shouldn't it be:
2 torn leather = 1 leather
Why do you not kill animals...? It's just a cow made of rectangles.. GET. OVER. IT.
I would suggest that 4 rotten flesh could be crafted into 1 leather (not 1:1 because zombies are really common and not persistant like animals.)
Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
Rotten flesh is a very usefus dog food recipe, and a good food souce if you have a bucket of milk handy.

Good food source, no.
