A trade system like that would make to easy to get some items. id rather go on adventure to look for a dungeon or lost mine shaft because thats one of the fun and exciting things in minecraft. wouldnt be that cool if you could just get it from villagers. and gold as a tradung item? then i go and cut the tree down myself, less expensiv and with a golden axe

i would like to have villagers that give quests, something like "Collect some of this and give it to me" and as a reward you would get items.
I'm all for some kind of villager trading. I'd prefer to see some kind of bartering system with different values placed on the blocks/items. Hopefully this would make certain resources completely renewable if you stick to a small area of your game world. (i.e. iron, diamond, ... sand even)
The only thing I wouldn't really be interested in from the mods stated by the original OP is having the villagers being able to build anything beyond what they already have. (i.e. the MIllenaire Mod) I think all building in the game should be done by the player and the player only. It's fine if you want to build nicer houses for them on your own volition, but if they start building in a spot that you wanted to use and they get angry when you destroy their things it is a bit annoying. Fortunately there has been no talk of implementing something like this by Mojang recently.
Beds? Beds were an excellent addition to the game. They set your spawn point. When you went thousands of blocks where no-one dared go, you were on literal hardcore. Beds created a way to skip boring nights when you are established and to make a spawn point. Simple. What was the big fuss?
Knowing Jeb and Jon, they will try to finish a system before releasing it. I believe that 1.3 will pretty much be focused on the Mod API and not this feature. Heck, they may do this as snapshot content anyway.
The main problem I will have is if the player can go and play through the whole game relying only on the village trading mechanic. Beds are really cool, and the player does not have to use them. I have no problem with beds, The example I was giving is that they made surviving the mine-craft night far easier, and kinda-sorta messed with the survival feel of the game. Remember I am not complaining about it. Although I don't really like the concept of sleeping through every single minecraft night to avoid mobs they are a great addition to the game.
I am saying that I personally would love to see far more done with villages than simple trade, and think that without trade; player-villager interactions could be far more... free?...
if the player was to interact with the village in more ways than just a menu it would go far to extend the "build, and explore your world" feel of minecraft. I know that trading does not mean that having interactions with the villagers is no longer possible, but it greatly reduces what I expected villages to really feel like in the long run.
However I am just stating my opinion. I will be perfectly happy if we get an awesome trading system, and If i don't like it I will not use it. I am just saying that I am/will be a bit disapointed if villagers become a "kill 20 mobs for us and you will earn..." or "trade 50 iron for a diamond..."

No. That will never come. They really need to remove those damn pages so people will stop asking or fantasizing stupid things about them.

They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
