I'm hoping this isn't just me, but So far all the worlds I create in this patch and last have had extremely low y value portals in the nether. This results in major digging and maneuvering to prevent punching through the bottom of a lava lake.
For example, the world I'm in now the portal base is at y14 and the cave I'm in is pretty small. Not to mention the entire ceiling is dripping red
Where was your portal in the main world located at on the Y axis?
Also, I tested out my 1.2 world's nether yesterday and it spawned me near a nether fortress on a flat open plain in the nether, with no lava lakes nearby. So I personally haven't had this issue.

When no one was looking, the Endermen took forty blocks.
They took 40 blocks. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s horrible.
