Abandoned mineshafts as of 1.2 are awesome. The change of adding the wooden bottoms where there used to be nothing at all made all the difference in the world.
I just cleared my first Abandoned Mineshaft on hardcore and the experience is... the best I've yet had in minecraft. After a ways into a cave and coming across a zombie dungeon, I came across an abandoned mineshaft... At first it was claustrophobic and confusing (I came up with a system to navigate through them that works well), gathering materials increased the profitability but increased the tension as the amount I could lose increased with every swing of the pick... at a point the shaft went through a ravine, and this is where the new wooden bottoms really made it all awesome... It was like something out of the Snes Donkey Kong minecart stages... There were supported minetracks extending through the darkness, as I went through placing torches, I would look down and see utter darkness and what must be a long fall, fog surrounding me as my fear of the sneaky zombie, stealthy creeper, sniping skeleton or drop down spider knocking me into the depths grew and grew... but I pressed on, zombies, creepers, skeletons, spiders all making sneaky attacks on me, then coming across the dreaded cave spiders, the venomous bastards have my respect and I have a new thing to fear from the mineshaft, I think how it's fortunate they aren't overworld creatures otherwise it would be a much more dangerous place. I even ran across some slimes!
That a ravine went through it all even helps me make some backstory to the world, somebody was mining here and then some cataclysm must have caused the ravine, opening the dungeons in the process, and splitting their mineshaft in the process... perhaps the original miners of long ago dug to deep... who can say?
Eventually after stowing my spoils a few times I had the whole thing cleared, and when I looked over it all it looks great... wooden cart rails going through the darkness, waterfalls, the shear drop into the darkness, the supports, the claustrophobic shafts and the feel of it all while clearing it all, great stuff. And the reward for clearing it all, quite worth it... but quite dangerous and difficult, worth the adventuring.
Amazing how such a small change can make the game look that much more awesome, be far more playable, and make the experience far more awesome! Good change Jen!
Positive feedback on a change in the game? Am I on the minecraft forums?
On topic, I've see pictures of it (haven't found one in my world yet) and they do look a lot better. Simple and small changes are always what I look forward to.
I have something strange with abandoned mineshaft I found in hardcore
There is a stone staircase that leads down to it from the surface.
Is that suppose to happen? Or is it just a funky generation thing.
Is it like a perfect staircase or just a little cave system that you describe as a staircase?
And, I don't wanna be THAT GUY but... Pics, Seed, and Coords or it doesn't exist

I guess it isn't perfect, and it only leads into a hallway that leads to the mine

Now THAT, is how one plays minecraft. Good to hear someone enjoying the game the way it was meant to be enjoyed.
