In 1.2.3 on my SMP server my villagers keep disappearing.
I've twice had to go into creative mode & spawn more, & it looks like I'll be doing it a 3rd time. My village seemed quiet, then I noticed something- all the villagers were gone again.
I started the server during the weeklies, so I'm thinking that might be part of the problem, or maybe it's just some problem with 1.2.3. Either way it's annoying.
Also, it says in the patch notes this was fixed, but seriously the tiniest bit of shade will now protect skeletons and zombies. As if mornings weren't enough of a nuisance. I've seen zombies and skeletons in full daylight protected by the 1 block of roof overhang on buildings.
Been in a village I stumbled on for about 14 in game days; build several new houses for them and contained the town with fences. Yet somehow their population keeps dwindling. I would rather not have to use creative; (thus far 100% legit survival server) but at this rate it doesn't look like they'll be any left to get back home.
Try building a test village in creative, but with a 2 block high wall around it. Come back to it after a few days, to see if they are just wandering, despawning, or dieing.
I'm not at a computer that can test it at the moment; but I gave that thread a read over.
The village space is about a 40X100, but it seems that only the houses in the 'main sector' are being occupied. (But none of the ones that are player built).
Houses on the outer edge, near the spawned wheat farms are abandoned.
None of the doors on houses we do have are facing other doors, and the roofs are solid. I'm not sure whats causing it.
I will try restarting the server tonight; maybe on SMP it just doesn't update their 'house' identification until the server restarts. I will post back an update with screens later in the day.

What they changed is zombies and skeletons now actively SEEK shading and will stay there
