I have just updated to 1.2 and I have been getting an enormous amount of lag. Before 1.2, I could get 70 FPS with 256x texture packs on far render distance and fancy graphics. Now, I'm getting 15 FPS in the default texture pack with fast graphics and short render distance. Another thing I noticed was that my render distance didn't seem to effect my FPS. I was getting 15 FPS on both far and short render distance. This makes me think that this is a bug and not my computer acting weird. I haven't changed anything with my computer at all since I played last. If anyone knows how to help me, please tell me.
There have been multiple topics about this, it's like anything else with computers and computer games EVERY computer acts differently. Take Call of Chthulu for example, it runs fine on some older machines and a few newer ones but due to newer graphics and sound cards that are considered standard or high quality not being supported by the game parts of it become unplayable or impassable, similar with Minecraft each computer handles these updates differently. Also performance seems to differ greatly from PC and MAC, so take that into account. There are also some people who have 2 computers, Laptop and a Desktop, and they say it Minecraft runs better on their Laptop than their Desktop.
A lot of these problems would be easily solved if they just incorporated optifine into the game or at least gave us some real video options to fine tune it.
For example: short view distance is utter crap because you can't even see the sky. It's ridiculous.
There seems to be a lot of stuttering for me I'll be hovering around 100Fps on far/fancy and when walking just walking it will drop to 70Fps for second and go back up for no reason.
Edit:The above was never an issue prior to 1.2-1.2.3 on 1.0 and 1.1 the game ran perfectly fine and my usual FPS was also higher.
I would also like to note using "F3" will have an absolutely ludicrous performance drop I was using Fraps to measure my FPS and decided to hit F3 and went from 100Fps to 60Fps and as long as F3 is open it will stay there.
My specs. Processor: AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz Memory: 8GB DDR3 Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6670 1GB
There is also a FPS drop when in jungles not much for me but maybe a lot for some.
The point here is that this isn't a bug. The lag isn't Mojang's fault. Many people, me included, have increased FPS in 1.2, or at least stayed the same. There is another issue causing the lag.

I've been a Minecraft player since Beta 1.7, still my favorite game!

Especially in singleplayer, I've been having massive lag spikes that go to 0 FPS. Prior to updating, I got a nice 100 FPS on max settings, and still do- before and after the spike that occurs every five minutes.
Hmm the only time I lag is when I hit F3 to check the spec on how things are running and my XYZ on the map..... at which point Minecraft slows to a crawl (dat 1-2fps) and the system resource monitor in minecraft expands exponentially..... At all other times the game runs fine.... oh dat piechart >,<
General fps is ok for me.
But at random frequent intervals, I get these lag spikes where it freezes for a second or two.
It even happens if I'm not moving.
It happens often enough to make 1.2 unplayable for me.
This never happened for me before, this is definately a 1.2 bug.

I used to lag bad too, but then as soon as 1.2 came out, I stopped lagging and my FPS increased to about 60 FPS with max settings. Maybe you have background programs on and that's causing you to lag?
Protip: Don't allocate more than 1024MB of ram to minecraft. MC never uses more than 512, and if you allocate more memory usage than MC uses then there is less ram for your other crap to use, causing your computer to freak out and cause awesome problems.
Close background programs, if they're open.

Could the people who are having issues post their computer specs?

To my knowledge, Mojang tried to do this, but they and the Optifine team couldn't come to terms on a price.

1.2 gave me over 50% more FPS above ground and like 120% more FPS underground.
